STUFFED TO THE GILLS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry for she of the Evil Eye will be here all too soon. So, first let me say that my stomach is filled to the brim with food from a double birthday dinner – mine and Sami’s mom – we went to the Woodland Hills branch of Ruth’s Chris, as we did last year. But this year the fun part is that Sami’s sister Sarah is working there as a hostess – if I remember correctly, last year she inquired about doing that at our dinner, and a month or so later she was hired. The food, while not quite as brilliant as the Beverly Hills branch, was superb. I had my little salad with 1000-Island dressing and I had three pieces of their incredible bread with their incredible butter. Then I had my usual New York steak and we all shared the lobster mac-and-cheese. I was stuffed to the gills then and am still stuffed to the gills, even though I haven’t a clew as to what the gills are. They gave us a nice birthday dessert – little teeny-tiny individual apple crumb cheesecake things and a little vanilla ice cream, which I only had a small bite of (the ice cream – of course I ate all of the cheesecake thing). It was a really fun dinner and Sami was relaxed and having a good time, which is the way we like Sami.

Prior to that, I’d gotten nine hours of sleep, did the usual morning things, and then I went and picked up some packages, then paid a visit to my nearby Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I needed some Beyond but I ended up getting stuff for the Bed and Bath. My kitchen garbage thing has been broken for a year (the pedal you step on to open it broke), so I bought a new one of those, much more sturdy. When I went to sleep last night my I stretched my foot and heard a ripping sound. Odd, I thought. I checked and sure enough the fitted sheet had a big rip in it that I must not have been aware of. I’ve had the sheets for about five years, so it was probably time to replace them. I got a nice set with thread count of 500, I think, and I also got a new bath mat. I came home, set up the garbage thing, washed the new sheets and dried them, whilst uploading my latest set of Sibelius symphonies, this one conducted by the wonderful John Barbirolli. Well, the first symphony began and it was like hearing the music for the first time – what a wonderful performance and the sound was fantastic – clear as a bell and detailed, with beautiful orchestral detail. The second symphony was equally great. Unfortunately, my set was missing its fifth CD, so even thought it was a third-party seller item, it was via Amazon fulfillment, so they refunded my money and said to just toss the item. I then ordered another set for eight bucks. Thankfully, all but symphony six was in the set, so I heard all but that. I got through three of them before it was time to leave for dinner.

Upon returning, I listened to the other three and they were just great – this is now my favorite set, but others are coming, so who knows what we’ll find and love or not love? I put the sheets on the bed, and then it was time to write these here notes, which, as you might be able to tell, is what I’m doing.

Today, I’ll be up by eight-thirty, and I’ll probably jog if I’m up to it. At eleven I’ll be comping vocals for the Kay Cole CD – not sure we’ll get through all fourteen songs, but maybe we will and that would be a good thing. I’m willing to go four hours. After that I won’t be of any use. I’ll probably eat in West LA since that’s where we’re working – I might go to Lenny’s Deli and get their yummilicious kishka. After my huge birthday splurge meal I must be a good boy. Then I’ll hopefully pick up packages, then I’ll watch a DGA screener or some movie, and I’ll listen to more music.

Tomorrow is Doug Haverty’s Christmas partay, and I’ll be there with bells on and also pants. I’m sure it will be festively festive and that a good time will be had by all. I have to decide whether to bring a couple of Dino’s pizzas – I may just. Next week there are meetings and meals and other things to do, but I’ll be winding down and then come Friday I am done for the year and I shall do nothing other than relax, listen, and watch.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, comp vocals, eat something light but amusing, hopefully pick up some packages, and then relax. Today’s topic of discussion: Where have you had the absolute best steak dinners you’ve ever had. What kind of steak, how was it prepared, and why was it so damn good? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall hopefully fall asleep despite being stuffed to the gills.
