YOUNGER THAN SPRINGTIME AND OLDER THAN MOLDERING FISH

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I do believe that after today I shall be on my way to a brand new age, but for now I am younger than springtime and older than a moldering fish. I am still spry of step and can actually get myself out of bed in the morning. And I have a nice day and evening ahead of me before I turn a new age, so I shan’t sit around and ponder being even older than I am now. But first, let us talk about the day of yester, which was a pleasant little day. I got nine hours of sleep, did my usual morning stuff, and the helper came and put up the outside Christmas decorations, which look ever so festively festive and will, as of this morning, actually light up. Also all the lights are out by the gate – when it rains it seems to just knock all of them out – so I must replace those today. I did some work on the computer and then I picked up a couple of packages. Upon returning home there was a screener waiting for me – the new movie, Jackie. But I had to get ready, which I did, and then it was time to mosey on over to Calabasas High School for a little rehearsal. The traffic at the juncture of the 405 and 101 freeways, as always, was terrible, and for no reason at all. Other than that, it was pretty easy going.

We began with the group number, my nonsense words medley of Sherman Brothers songs. The kids pretty much had it down, just some lyric fumfers. I began staging it and got it done in about forty minutes. They picked it all up quickly and then I tasked them to tighten it up and run it on their own, which I’m sure they will. Then we did the duet – two talented gals doing my Chitty and Hushabye Mountain put-together. They know their stuff and I just gave a couple of small notes. Then came Sami and Suddenly It Happens, but we were kind of out of time so I couldn’t do the detail work I needed to, and I spent some of the time correcting stuff in the arrangement so she’s hearing what she’s used to. But we spoke on the phone later and I gave her very specific notes about the structure and dynamics of the song – she’s so good now about taking notes and really understanding them, so she’ll work on her own until sound check, and we’ll do her song first so we have time to get it right.

After that, Sami’s mom and I had dinner at Maria’s Kitchen. I had the tiny side Caesar salad and an excellent penne pasta with sausage, mushrooms, peppers, and onions. That was VERY filling. I got on the freeway going home around ten to six, ready for the worst of rush hour traffic and knowing there was nothing to be done about it. But surprisingly I was home in twenty-five minutes – there were a few slow patches but it was never really stop and go so that was such a nice surprise.

When I got home, there were three more screeners waiting for me – something called Nocturnal Animals with Amy Adams, something called Loving, and something called A Monster Calls. I chose Nocturnal Animals because it sounded interesting and because I really always enjoy Amy Adams. And interesting it was – I’m not sure it’s a brilliant movie, but it has a very interesting construction and I quite enjoyed it. I was never bored, and it actually has a real movie score, which was a pleasant surprise. I’m not sure it’s for everyone, but of what I’ve seen this year, it was certainly better than most.

After that, I listened to music, answered e-mails, printed out some orders, and had the Sami telephonic call.

Today, I have to pick something up at eleven, then I’ll do some banking, hopefully I’ll pick up some packages, then get ready for our event. Richard and Elizabeth Sherman will get here at two-thirty and we’ll trek out to Calabasas. We’ll do our sound check, then we’ll go grab a bite to eat, then return and do our event, which I’m told is completely sold out. I will, of course, have a full report.

Tomorrow is, of course, my very own actual birthday. I’m being taken for a birthday lunch by Kay Cole, so that will be fun. Then I think I’ll just have a li’l ol’ ME day and evening – that will be nice. If someone calls and asks me to do something in the evening, I’ll say yes, but it’s not a problem if that doesn’t happen.

Friday may be a joint birthday dinner with Sami’s mom – they’ll let me know today. If not, I may go and comp vocals in the evening, but if the dinner is on, then I can comp on the weekend, most likely. Otherwise, I think the weekend is pretty open and I’m jiggy with that.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora and the tango, for today is the birthday of our very own beloved dear reader Jane, who I’ve known since she was fifteen. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to our very own beloved dear reader Jane who I’ve known since she was fifteen. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO OUR VERY OWN BELOVED DEAR READER JANE WHO I’VE KNOW SINCE SHE WAS SIXTEEN!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, pick up something, do some banking, hopefully pick up packages, do a sound check, sup, and then do An Evening with Richard Sherman at Calabasas High. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as I remain younger than springtime and older than moldering fish.
