January 18, 2017:

WORDS ARE A DISH BEST SERVED COLD

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much exhausted fish, writing yet more words. I wrote many words yesterday and now I am writing more words. These are an extra helping of words, a side dish of words, and we all know that words are a dish best served cold. What the HELL am I talking about? I’m talking about words, that’s what I’m talking about. Yesterday I wrote a lot of words, about fourteen pages of words. That was a good day of writing. But more about that in a minute. Right now I must write some words.

Yesterday was a wacky little day. I got eight hours of sleep and was up by ten. I futzed and finessed the previous day’s writing – adding a bit here, removing a bit there, smoothing things out and then I wrote about one and a half new pages. I had one of those gifts I love just before going to bed the night before, and that’s what I continued writing and boy was it fun. I went and had a Philly cheesesteak sandwich and a few fries for my meal o’ the day, then I picked up a couple of packages, then came home and continued writing. I wrote about four more pages, took a break, had some telephonic conversations, booked the release party date for Kay Cole’s CD, which is March 6, then I wrote more pages, about four of them, which left four to do and I had the whole evening to do them. I made some popcorn, I had some low-cal cherry chocolate chip ice cream and I wrote more pages, and by that time I’d done the eleven for the day. I took a hot shower, then wrote three more pages, finishing the chapter. Then I began the next chapter, just writing the first two sentences so I’d be into the chapter when coming back to it. So a very full day of writing and without too many interruptions, which was nice.

Now what? I told about my entire day in one paragraph. That’s what happens when you do nothing but write, with no diversions. I didn’t even turn on the television, nor did I play any SACDs from the little pile on the table in front of the couch. I did listen to some music – a little Villa-Lobos, a little William Walton and, of course, a little Sibelius. Oh, and some Benjamin Britten, too – his piano concerto, violin concerto, and Four Sea Interludes.

Now what? Has anyone noticed that I am vamping here? This is called a vamp till ready. I am not ready so I am vamping until I get to the second page of this here Word document. Aha, that just happened. Oh, and I forgot to mention that when I woke up yesterday there was a notice that there was a security update available. And what was this for? Why to fix a kernel problem in El Capitan (the operating system I’m currently using) that causes iMacs to occasionally become unresponsive. Since that’s what’s been happening for over a month, I’m hoping that this problem has now been fixed. It surprises me that my Apple expert didn’t mention this to me – it was obviously a known issue and I could not have been the only one who was having it. Anyway, here’s hoping it fixed the problem.

Today will be another all writing day and by the end of it I do believe I will have past 200 pages. I’ll futz and finesse, write a few new pages, then I’ll eat, hopefully pick up some packages, write more, relax, write, relax, and write. We also have to ship out about twenty more CDs – we go all the rest out yesterday so keep your eye open for them.

Tomorrow will be more writing, and then a work session for the Kritzerland show, then more writing and at some point I really do have to begin the commentary. I’m just not in that mode right now. Friday and the weekend will obviously be more writing. And whenever I finish the book, which I anticipate will be sometime between Sunday and Tuesday, then I will print out those pages and get them to Muse Margaret. While I don’t know exactly how I’ll write it yet or even structure it, I do know all the major beats of the story from here to the end, so that’s a lot of pressure off and hopefully I will write it well. A few bits here and there are already written – just a line or two of dialogue or a sentence or two.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, futz and finesse, write, eat, hopefully pick up packages, write, relax, write, relax, write, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall remember that words are a dish best served cold.
