THE EARS HAVE IT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the ears have it – or the left ear has it. What the left ear has I have no idea but it’s bugging my butt, frankly. Somewhere around three o’clock yesterday my left her suddenly felt muffled and distorted, as if a tweeter had blown or something. I’ve never had any problems with my ears in my entire life, so this was very annoying. It’s still there, too. I’ve read up on the possible things it could be, so on Monday I’ll make an appointment with an ENT to have it checked. I’m sure it’s not a big deal whatever it is, and I’m actually hoping that maybe it will go away before Monday. So, send excellent vibes and xylophones for a better left ear. End of ears have it paragraph.

Yesterday was kind of an okay little day. I was up at eight-thirty, then she of the Evil Eye arrived, I did a few things on the computer, and then I went and had two poached eggs on an English muffin. I put the designed book PDF into the Cloud so I could look at it on my phone and I just skimmed through it looking at left and right margins, just to double check once again that everything was aligned properly, which it seemed to be. I did catch one tiny one-word orphan at the bottom of the page and e-mailed Grant to add that to the fixes. I picked up a couple of packages, one of which contained the new sandals I bought so I don’t fall down anymore by getting my untied shoelaces caught in a door.

Then the family arrived to hear the commissioned song and I must say they reacted very favorably to it and said they absolutely loved it, so that was really nice. Then we visited for a while, then they left. And shortly thereafter the thing with my left ear began, just out of the blue or the green or the magenta. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish and listened to two Sibelius CDs, but my left ear thing was so weird it was too hard to listen and I stopped. Then Grant called and said he’d done all the fixes and he made a nice style thing with the chapters and titles – the actual chapter heading is now in gray and the title in black – it looks really good. Then he sent me the final PDF and I’ll just give it a quick go-through today at some point and that will then be locked. It really does look swell. Then it was time to get ready for the belated birthday dinner for Sami, now seventeen years old. I’ve now known and worked with this lovely girl since she was twelve, and it’s a little frightening how they grow up so fast.

We met at Tony’s Bella Vista. I had my usual carbonara, which was great, and a dinner salad. I stayed away from the garlic bread because we had a small pepperoni pizza as an appetizer. I had two pieces of that. Sami didn’t care for her dinner – I’d tried to get her to have what I was having, and she tasted that and ended up having a bit of it because she really liked it. But we had a fun time. I told them about a recent Facebook thing and how I’d sort of called someone out for their past behavior and she said she’s become just like me, that she learned that from me. I said, “You’ve been Bruced.” For her little present I repeated last year’s present – several bottles of OPI nail polish in all the latest color. She loves that stuff and is, I’m told, as I write these here notes, putting some on.

After that I came right home. I will say that I was a bad boy and brought the leftover two pieces of pizza home and ate them all up – the pizza was the best I’ve had there – just perfect really. I listened to some quieter music so it wouldn’t bug my ears. And I had a very long catching up conversation with our very own Nick Redman, and that was fun.

Today, I’m hoping to get a really good night’s beauty sleep, and I’m praying when I get up this ear thing will be on the mend. I’ll then give the final PDF the once-over, and then I have to go judge the singing contest, which will take over three hours. Not sure what I’ll do about foodstuffs. I could have something before, but I think my instinct is to wait until after.

Tomorrow, if the left ear hasn’t healed I’ll make an appointment with the ENT. Otherwise, I have to make the show order, see the cover and back cover and approve, write commentary, have meetings and meals, I’m seeing Sandy Bainum’s new club act on Friday, and there are other things going on.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must for example, give the book one last once-over, judge the singing contest finals, eat at some point, and then relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping that the left ear problem goes away all by itself.
