#WHEREDIDTHISYEARGO

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, can it really be the Friday before the Annual Christmas Eve Do? Can it? How did this happen – what a busy little year this has been and how quickly it’s flown by, like a gazelle with the hashtag #stopwiththegazellejokes already. I mean, the year began in January and here we are at the end of December. I guess I should talk about this year, but I think I’ll save that for closer to our annual New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Bash. In any case, Christmas is but a few days away, and yet I have not received any pipers piping or drummers drumming – I did, however, receive a few phoners phoning. It has been a little colder lately, so that helps contribute to the holiday spirit. I’m feeling very unprepared for the impending Do.

Yesterday, I got about seven-and-a-half hours of sleep, got up, answered e-mails, shaved, showered, and then did some work on the computer until Alexa, daughter of Leslie, was brought over by dad Pascal. We went to the garage and began pulling out boxes. I asked her to create aisles and put the paintings all in one place and to get some boxes on shelves. I left her to it, whilst my wiring guy began his work – that didn’t last long because we ascertained that it was just going to be too much of a pain in the butt cheeks to wire under the house and so the decision was made to look into wireless rear-channel speakers or to see if there’s some adapter we can use with the existing speakers. So, he was only here briefly.

Then I helped Alexa and we unboxed quite a few CDs and Blu-rays and got them on shelves – about eight boxes of stuff. By that time, she’d organized the paintings, created a nice, wide aisle, and after all of that we put the boxes we’d taken out back – she’ll come again next week and in that session I will leave it to her to organize everything, starting with the shelves – it may take two or three days, but I trust her to get it done and then it will be much nicer. Once it’s all organized, I am really going to go through everything and then sell stuff on either eBay or in a garage sale. I simply have no use for anything that needs to remain in a box.

We were both quite hungry after three hours, so we went first to put air in my front right tire – it looked low to me and was – and then to the mail place, where I picked up one screener and no mail, and then on to Hugo’s. I can’t remember the last time I was there, but it’s been months. I had my usual pasta papa and small Caesar salad and Alexa had Pasta Victor, which she liked very much – she also had a small Caesar. For dessert we shared their wonderful chocolate mousse.

Then her papa picked her up and I went about my business and did more work on the computer, had a couple of telephonic calls, we set the rehearsal schedule for the Kritzerland show, and then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched about an hour of a DGA screener entitled It, the new version of the Stephen King novel, which I’ve never had the desire to read at 1100 pages. I didn’t really like the TV movie from the 90s at all, but I know this film did well and had a lot of fans. Thus far, I’m not loving it for the same reason I didn’t love the TV movie – I just don’t love the characters – they’re standard issue nerds and bullies and I’m very bored of that. Plus they’ve reset the time period of the early scenes to the 80s, for all those 80s nostalgia freaks who’ve made the ordinary Stranger Things into some kind of hit. But I’ll stick with it until the end.

After that, I did a show order and began writing the commentary – I didn’t get far, but at least it’s on its way. I also relaxed and listened to some music. Oh, and Sami’s mom came to bring some stuff back that she’d borrowed and brought me a little snack that her husband had made for dinner – a tiny bit of very good tri-tip and some carrots – very good for my evening snack.

Today, I really must try to do a Costco run – I dread it, but I really don’t want to wait until tomorrow when it will be even more nuts. I don’t need all that much stuff – some waters, some Diet Cokes, and stuff for the Do like paper plates and plastic eating utensils. Since I’ve kept the guest list very small this year I don’t really need a lot of that stuff. Cups I have aplenty IF I can figure out which box they’re in – it may just be easier to buy new ones and new napkins rather than try to figure that out. Then I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, and then I’m supping at the Jones place, which I’m looking forward to.

Tomorrow I’ll get everything prepared for the Do – I really have no other plans at all, other than mailing out some Christmas cards. Sunday is, of course, the Day of the Do and I must cook all the livelong day – I will absolutely jog, and then the guests arrive at six.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a Costco run, hopefully pick up some packages, send Christmas cards, write more commentary, and then sup at the Jones jernt. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray player? I’ll start – CD, upcoming Kritzerland stuff. DVD, more screeners. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, still baffled and amazed by how quickly this year has flown by, hashtag #wheredidthisyeargo.
