THE TONY BASH

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we had us quite a lovely Tony Awards bash despite many errant and truant dear readers (you know who you are) and despite that I, BK, could not watch them due to not having any TV service at the new house – never transferred it over (I know who I am).  So, there I sat like so much fish, living vicariously through our Tony Awards Bash.  From what I read it sounded like the usual mélange of the good, the bad, and the ugly. So, while others watched, I listened to a lot of music, watched a bit of a few things on the television (Blu-rays) and played a couple of stereo-only SACD releases, both of which were okay but not up to the greatness of some that I’ve heard.

But prior to all that I first got about four hours of sleep, was having some tummy issues (too much CREAM in my carbonara I think), was up for about ninety minutes, then went back to bed and slept almost until one, so almost ten hours of very necessary sleep.  Once up, I answered a few e-mails and was just lazy. Eventually I went and picked up some packages, then came back home and rustled up some Wacky Noodles – about five or six ounces I think – very good and very filling.  Then I sat on my couch like so much fish and watched a bit of the new Kino release of A Fistful of Dollars.  I thought it wasn’t too good and the Eyetalian release of a few years ago based on a then-new restoration by Ripley remains the best-looking Fistful release.  This new one, supposedly based on a 4K transfer of the original camera negative, seems overly contrasty, the color is a bit orange and it seems no sharper to me than the previous transfer done at 2K that wasn’t from the camera negative. The color on that one is really accurate.  But I was curious about the new one and now my curiosity has been dissatisfied.

Then I also listened to quite a lot of music – some really wonderful stuff, some stuff I’m glad to have heard but didn’t need to keep in iTunes, and then uploaded a few more things, nuking some older stuff.  I also finally approved the master for Ira Gershwin Revisited, so that’s off to the pressing plant and I’m thinking we’ll have Alan Jay Lerner Revisited by the end of this week or early next, depending on when the print gets to the pressing plant.

Then I tuned in here to haineshisway.com for our Tony Awards Bash, where I lived vicariously.  After the East Coast posts, I proofed the latest chart and made the handful of corrections, which we’ll attend to when I awake this morning – then that can be tracked and that will leave one very short piece to come.

Today, I’ll finish casting the Kritzerland show for July, and then gather sheet music and get it to everyone – I’ve pretty much chosen the songs already although I usually adjust to whatever singers I have. I’ll eat, hopefully pick up packages, do some errands and whatnot, and begin a new set of liner notes.

The rest of the week is meetings and meals, I must RSVP to an important event that happens next week, I think I’m going to an opening night on Friday, and I’ll be preparing for our private reading and hoping these damn allergies abate and that the air is not so damn dry.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, finish casting, gather up music and get to singers, hopefully pick up packages, eat, maybe jog if it’s not too darn hot, and write.  Today’s topic of discussion: What were your favorite and least favorite numbers from last night’s show?  And of the new cast recordings of new shows and revivals, which do you like? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have attended our Tony Bash even though I didn’t see the Tonys.
