FROM ATONAL TO TONAL IN ONE EASY LESSON

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is very late and therefore I must write these here notes in a hurry and get them posted.  I shall try to be both pithy and droll even though at this time I am feeling neither of those things – more like pissy and debilitated thanks to some rather irritating late-night goings on.  Sometimes I think it just never ends these irritations, and I truly need them to end, stop, be done, get the HELL out of my life you oleaginous dog snot irritations.  Well, one must deal with such things as best one can. One miracle comes, then more merde comes and makes things difficult again.  Why I oughta…

Yesterday was a fine day up until about eleven-thirty at night.  I didn’t get to bed until four-thirty because I got a little YouTube crazy getting audio converted to mp3s.  I found a good site for that, and for anything in mono it works pretty well, but for stereo it occasionally converts stereo to mono for reasons I can’t fathom, while sometimes the stereo comes through fine.  The quality degrades a little from the not so great quality on YouTube, which is another issue, but there was some rare stuff I found and now I at least have it.  One guy in particular puts up a lot of movie stuff that I know he’s getting from the films themselves but somehow he’s managing to remove the sound effects and dialogue – not sure how, but he’s got a sixteen-minute suite of music from The Haunting that’s just great to have.  So, I didn’t arise until twelve-thirty after about eight hours of sleep.

Once up, I did some stuff on the computer, answered e-mails, had some telephonic conversations, then went and picked up some packages – lots of screeners arrived – then put gas in the motor car.  After that, I came right home.

I did some song choosing, had more telephonic conversations, and then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a DGA screener entitled On the Basis of Sex – I had no idea what it was but it turned out to be the real-life story of the early career and life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, screenplay written by her nephew.  I’m not a fan of the director, Mimi Leder, and sure enough I found the direction rather ordinary and even a little flat-footed at times.  The story is interesting, of course, and it pushes all the proper buttons, but it really does feel more like a TV movie than a movie movie.  Why they couldn’t find an American actress to play an American woman is an enigma.  Felicity Jones does fine – she’s a talented actress, for sure, but still one wonders (originally, Natalie Portman was going to play the role).  Armie Hammer plays her loyal and understanding husband – not much to play, actually.  The other actors are all fine and it moves along at a steady clip and I certainly enjoyed it for what it was.

After that, I listened to music, had the irritant, and listened to more music – some atonal music to suit my now atonal mood.  As soon as I’m through writing these here notes I’ll put some tonal music on so I can begin the new day with a spring in my step and a smile on my face, not necessarily in that order.

Today, I’ll do the usual morning stuff, then Kay Cole is coming by and taking me for a belated birthday luncheon at noon-thirty, so that will be fun.  Then I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, and then I’ll work on the January Kritzerland show – just one or two more young folks to cast and then songs to choose.  I’m sure I’ll listen to music and perhaps watch another screener.

Tomorrow we resume our A Carol Christmas performances.  I’ll definitely attend and then see how I feel about taking the rest of the weekend shows off.  It will depend on whether I know anyone coming.  Saturday I’ll relax and do stuff, Sunday will be the same, and then I am on vacation for the rest of the year.  Of course, we have our Annual Christmas Eve Do to do, and then our Rockin’ New Year’s Eve Bash.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have a belated birthday lunch, hopefully pick up packages, finish casting and choose more songs, and then relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: What were your favorite theatergoing experiences of 2018?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as I finish the atonal and move to the tonal.
