THE FINAL SIX

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we had us a full house, a great audience, and the cast gave them a great show – full standing ovation at the end (unusual for this theater) and much cheering.  We sold a few CDs after to happy patrons.  We had some sound issues – minor – but someone was on our frequency and causing havoc.  That can happen, but unfortunately the sound guy can’t go from the booth to the receivers backstage and so it couldn’t be fixed.  Most of it was fine, but for tonight’s show it will be a new frequency. This show is so much fun when it’s firing on all cylinders.  I had a few friends, including my old pal Dorothy Collier and her sister.  Dorothy went to LACC and did a summer musical I wrote songs for – Alice through the Looking Glass.  For fun, I said, “Sing the opening song for me.” Without blinking an eye she sang it – every note and word correct.  We’re talking about 1967 here. Also there was Jenna Lea Rosen and mom Heather and we sat together.  After the show the three of us went to the Coral Café.  I’d only had a snack all day, so I had my beloved chicken fried steak – great as always, and we had fun catching up.

Prior to that, I once again didn’t get to bed until four and the alarm didn’t go off at eleven, so I slept until 11:45.  Once up, I answered e-mails and then I did a soundtrack podcast via Skype. That was fun and took about an hour. Then the CD dealer came over and picked up his stuff, and then I had a little snack to tide me over until I could eat a proper meal.  Then a project was dropped off and I listened to that and it will be a weird but fun soundtrack release.  And then Sony sent me the flat transfers of our next release with them (probably announcing beginning of February if not sooner.  We got the two-track album masters as reference, and then the three-track transfers.  Unfortunately, those were not what I thought they’d be – no score tracks at all – just the Bobby Morse song, the Dixieland source music track, and then a “pop” version of the main theme.  That wasn’t on the LP so it will be a nice bonus track.  But I’m going to ask them to check the vaults one more time because the sound on the three track tapes is breathtaking and while the sound on the album masters is fine and much better than the import release that was available from Spain, the three-track tapes are in a whole other universe.

So, that was a lot of my afternoon.  Then I got ready, stopped at the mail place and picked up no packages and one Christmas card, and then moseyed on over to the theater.

Once there, I made two little staging adjustments in one scene – just to have someone’s entrance be more in light and then a little cross downstage to cover some music.  Both fixes worked great in the show.  The rest you know.

Today, I think I’m going to try and brave Costco to get all the stuff for the Do. I’d just love to get that out of the way, frankly.  I know it will be a madhouse, but I think it will be worse on Monday.  I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, eat something light, and then I’ll attend our show, as I know some folks attending.

Tomorrow we play our matinee, then I come right home to begin the slicing and dicing and chopping for the Do, and I make the tuna pasta salad.  The stuff for that I have to get on the way home, at Gelson’s. Monday I’ll be slaving over a hot stove all day and then at six people begin arriving.  It will be nice to have a festively festive and warm and cozy gathering.  Hoping that the Shermans are up for it – I may have to send someone to drive them, but that’s easy to do.  I think I’ll see my Darling Daughter on Christmas Day, and then the rest of the week I can do book-related stuff, and start to figure out the show order for January’s Kritzerland show – I’ve figured out most of the songs now and have begun getting them to the people, just another three or four to choose, which I’ll do today.  And then we play our final weekend of shows, and then we have our Annual New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Bash right here at haineshisway.com.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, brave Costco, hopefully pick up packages, eat, and attend our show. Today’s topic of discussion: How will you be spending your Christmas? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have begun our final six shows with a great performance, and sad that we’ve begun our final six shows (now five).
