THE UNDER THE WEATHER HALF A CAST

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, half of the A Carol Christmas got sick this week, despite my many admonishments not to.  But when others are sick and they don’t stay home but go out and infect everyone, this is what happens and I suppose there’s nothing to be done about it.  In fact, one of our kids, our sole boy, only did one show last weekend and hasn’t been back since and won’t be this weekend.  I think he pretty much infected everyone in the cast – even Peyton, who religiously takes her Sambucol, got sick and she was not in contact with any other sick people.  She’s still got a difficult cough and hopefully that will be gone soon.  She couldn’t suppress it for the entire show, but she did a good job of soldiering on. The others got through it okay – I don’t think the audience was aware but I was because it certainly affected the energy and vibe of the show.  And there was some very sloppy stuff going on, so I’ve called a fifteen-minute clean-up rehearsal tonight at seven to address that stuff.  One of the panels was positioned incorrectly – one has a mic attached to it and it’s supposed to be on stage right, but apparently no one ever told this to the stage manager and I guess we’ve just been lucky for the past four weeks.  The actress who does her number near that panel managed to project well enough.  I’ve now put safeguards in place so that it can’t happen again.  I also think there’s a light out on stage right, so the designer will be in today to check that out.  I think it’s been out for a week now.  I didn’t really know anyone save for the helper, who said he enjoyed himself, and for writers Rick Podell and Mike Preminger.  We had half a house, but there’s a reason that’s been the case during the run on Fridays and Saturdays – we’re not listed on Plays 411, the major way this theater sells tickets.  Plays 411 owes them a lot of money so they used us to leverage it.  Unfortunately, it hasn’t gotten them their money and it’s hurt our show – we’d have at least twenty to thirty more people a night if we were on the service – there is no question about it.

Prior to that, I think I got seven hours of sleep, got up, answered e-mails, did some work on the computer, then at around one-thirty I went and picked up one package (there were others but they’d just gotten there and weren’t scanned in and they were really busy), then I went to In ‘N’ Out, then came home and ate the two cheeseburgers, which were pretty good.

Then I decided to see what all the brouhaha was about with The Marvelous Mrs. Meisel, so I watched the first episode of the first season.  Certainly the period detail is fun, I find the music choices fun and irritating at the same time, and some of the jokes are not that funny (this is a series about comedy), but the actors are very good and I’ll watch a few more episodes just to see where it’s going.

Then I got ready, and moseyed on over to the theater, where I found out that half the cast was sick.  We sold a few CDs, so that was good – it helped to have Doug doing it since he made sure everyone saw they were for sale.  Then I came right home after the show.

I had some crackers, some ice cream, and a couple of pieces of chocolate licorice for my evening snack. My voice is kind of shot, too – Doug was sick last week and lost his voice so I hope I’m not getting what he had.  So, I took my Sambucol and will hope for the best, but my allergies are also bugging me so it could be that.

Today, I have to be up early because she of the Evil Eye will be here bright and early. I’ll go have a light breakfast, then I’ll do errands and whatnot and retrieve the other small packages that I know arrived yesterday, then I’ll come home and relax and maybe watch a screener. Then I’ll go to the theater and clean-up a few things.  Not sure if I’ll stay and watch.

Tomorrow I’ll see how I feel about attending the matinee.  If everyone is still sick, I’m not sure I need to be there. I do know we’re sold out for that show. Then on Monday I’m done for the year. My plan is to figure out the Kritzerland show, then write a rough version of the first couple of pages of what I hope will be my new novel, along with the first couple of pages of what I hope will be my non-fiction book.  But mostly I’m takin’ it easy.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s dance the Hora or the Bugaloo, for today is the birthday of our very own dear reader ChasSmith.  So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to our very own dear reader ChasSmith.  On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO OUR VERY OWN DEAR READER CHASSMITH!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, eat a light breakfast, hopefully pick up packages, relax, do a short clean-up rehearsal, and then I’ll either see the show or just come home.  Today’s topic of discussion: What were your favorite CDs of 2018?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping all our sick folk feel better soon.
