DISTRACTIONS WHILST DRIVING

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, can one of you explain to me how it is legal for drivers to wear headphones whilst driving, thereby cutting out all sound from the outside?  Isn’t that just a wee bit dangerous?  I’m not talking about ear buds, I’m talking about over the ears full headphones.  How do they hear if someone is giving them a warning honk?  How do they hear if there’s an approaching siren?  How are they aware of ANYTHING when they’re blasting music in their stupid ears?  I see it more and more and it’s just one more distraction that drivers don’t need to have.  Between that and cell phones and talking and texting and reading and looking at their maps – driving a motor car requires the driver to be alert.  It’s as simple as that.  End of rant.

Yesterday was another very brief day.  I had a rough night, tummy-wise – I stupidly ate some of the leftover chicken salad too late in the evening and what an error that was. So, I only got about three-and-a-half hours of sleep and then I had to be up for the helper’s arrival.  That happened at eleven, and I went right back to the bedroom and thankfully slept another three-and-a-half hours, for a total of seven.  But by then it was two-thirty.  I got up, answered e-mails, then went and picked up the package from the day before, then stopped at the nearby McDonald’s, as I just wanted something fast and easy. I came home and ate all of that, listened to wonderful musique of the French composer Jean-Michel Damase, whilst beginning to upload twenty CDs of musique by the French composer, Francis Poulenc.  I had several telephonic conversations during the doing of that.  I’d already determined that I was not going to have the time or energy to watch anything.

I moved on to the Poulenc music, beginning with the orchestral works, and they’re so captivating and delightfully delightful. Whilst listening, I chose more songs for both the Kritzerland show and the Group Rep show. I still have four songs to choose for the former, and about three for the latter.  The evening went by much too quickly.  I had another telephonic conversation and had a few other things to do on the computer.  And I shaved so that I wouldn’t have to do that in the morning.

Today, I’ll be up by eight-thirty, shower, and then around nine-thirty I’ll mosey on over to the DGA pension office, which isn’t on Sunset in the DGA building (why it isn’t is anyone’s guess) but is on Wilshire near Highland.  So, I don’t want to go anywhere near the freeway at that time of morning and I certainly don’t want to take Highland.  So, I have my secret route to get over the hill, and once I hit Fountain, which is south of Sunset, then I’ll head over to La Brea from there, and take La Brea all the way down to Wilshire and then jog over to Highland from there. The actual appointment is at ten-thirty, so I’m hoping an hour is plenty of time for a half-hour drive.  I’ll have that meeting – I have lots of questions – we’ll decide how best to proceed, and I’ll check the necessary boxes and sign the form.  Then I was thinking about Astro Burger, but we’ll see how I feel.  If not, I’ll just head right home.  If I don’t do Astro Burger, then I’ll eat something once I’m back, I’ll hopefully pick up packages, I’ll finish the song choosing and get the singers whatever music they need, then I’ll do the blurb for the Kritzerland show. Then I have to go to the Group Rep to see some run-through of something that’s not actually happening at the Group Rep, but it’s a new member who supposedly sings, so I’ll hear her.

Tomorrow, I have a meeting about the next concert at the Autrey in September, and then the rest of the week is meetings and meals and going and doing and doing and going.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up early, meet with the DGA pension department, eat, hopefully pick up packages, finish choosing songs, get people music, write a blurb, and then finally relax.  Today’s topic of discussion: Have you gotten into near accidents or even had accidents because someone was not being alert due to cell phone use, texting, reading texts, or having headphones on?  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, tired of people who get in their motor cars and drive with way too many distractions.
