THE GARAGE PURGE PART ONE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is Friday.  Isn’t it great that you can always count on up-to-the-minute news here on haineshisway.com?  Armed with this knowledge, you are empowered, you can walk the walk and talk the talk, not necessarily in that order.  If anyone comes up to you and says, “What day is this?” you can answer with certainty and purpose, “This day is FRIDAY – how do I know this?  I read it on what will soon be the most popular site on all the Internet – haineshisway.com.

Yesterday was something, not sure what, really.  I got very little sleep, maybe four hours, was up way too early, but simply could not go back to sleep because the helper’s helpers were coming to do the garage purge at ten.  So, I was out there at eight-thirty, pulling boxes out of the garage, ones I knew could go.  Once those were out, I was actually able to go through some boxes that I hadn’t been able to get to, although I did not find what I was looking for – I have the feeling that stuff is buried in some box where it doesn’t belong.  The helper’s helpers arrived, but not in a truck – an SUV, so they couldn’t take all that much and we had to put a few boxes back. I told them we really need the truck, so hopefully we can do that sooner than later.  I threw out one whole box of crap, so that was good.

After that, I was exhausted from the lugging and the lifting. Then I went to Jerry’s Deli – haven’t been in two weeks – and had a chili, cheese, and onion hot dog and a side Caesar salad, both good.  I ascertained there was no mail to pick up, and then I came home.  Nick from Vitello’s came by and picked up his mics.  Then I dozed off for a while, identified some unidentified DVDs (homegrown), and then dozed off for a while.  Then I spent way too much time on the phone with Amazon about a package that should have been here Tuesday, wasn’t, then an “attempted” delivery was made on Wednesday night, long after the UPS Store was closed – my account is now clearly labeled as a business and that packages must be delivered in business hours.  And yet, our idiot Amazon Logistics driver says he tried at 7:48, which is a lie and is the exact same time the same yokel said he tried to deliver a package a month ago. I have now requested that no packages be shipped via Logistics and apparently I’m one of many who have made that exact same request.  No one was giving me any satisfaction, and so I began to sing, “I can’t get no satisfaction” until I finally got some.  I would not get off the phone until they refunded the money, I received twenty-five dollars in a code for all my wasted time, cancelled the item, and ordered it anew and it was cheaper and will be here on Sunday.  Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a glorious motion picture on Blu and Ray from Criterion – Swing Time, my favorite Astaire and Rogers movie.  I think of all the praise heaped on the film musical, La La Land, especially its score.  I didn’t like the film at all and I liked the score even less.  And then you watch Swing Time and one after another you hear Pick Yourself Up, The Way You Look Tonight, A Fine Romance, and Never Gonna Dance – THOSE are songs and they remain as fresh and inventive today as they were back then.  And here we have two leads who actually sing and dance.  And what dancing it is – no peripatetic editing from shot to shot, close-ups of feet, arms, faces – just full shots of two superb dancers doing superb choreography that has a point and that you can SEE.  No one would be allowed to film a dance sequence like that today, although that’s exactly what I would do.  The entire cast is terrific, there’s some fun comedy, but it’s the songs and the dancing and it’s pure art and heaven, especially Never Gonna Dance, one of the greatest dance numbers in the history of movies.  Apparently, the negative is lost, but this is a nice-looking blemish-free transfer with good contrast and detail.  I loved every second of it.

After that, I went to Gelson’s and got a little chicken noodle soup from their soup bar and some salad from their salad bar, then I came home and ate it all up.  I’m now kind of nauseous.

Today, I’m not sure what’s what. I have someone coming at ten to buy some CDs, then I’ll go do garage stuff for an hour or two, then I’ll eat, hopefully pick up some packages and an important envelope, cast (I set one more person yesterday), choose songs, and relax.

I may or may not see some one-acts over the weekend, otherwise I’m just resting and getting some sleep.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have a visitor, do garage stuff, eat, hopefully pick up packages and an important envelope, cast, choose songs, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray player? I’ll start – CD, many things. Blu-ray, the extras on Swing Time. Your turn.  Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy do have at least done a partial garage purge.
