THE MOLLY GOLDBERG VARIATIONS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting her like so much fish after having ordered two mild breasts from Popeye’s but being given two spicy breasts from Popeye’s.  Now, I don’t know about you dear readers, but I like my breasts mild and not spicy. And yet, I had to eat two spicy breasts and I did, but now I am filled with spice and paying the price ($6.09) that such spice brings to those who eat it.  In other news, I may vomit on the ground.  In other news, I am filled with spice and that simply isn’t nice.  As I sit here filled with spice, I am listening to the Goldberg Variations – not the Molly Goldberg Variations, which consist of “Oy” and “Vey” – no, I am listening to the J.S. Bach Goldberg Variations and who knew that Bach was even award of Molly Goldberg and her two variations?  I’m not sure I ever heard the Goldberg Variations before, but I am listening to them now in an orchestrated for string orchestra by Dimitry Sitkovetsky and it is simply enchanting music and I love the orchestration.  What the HELL am I talking about?  Don’t I have notes to write? I do, and I shall, not necessarily in that order.

Yesterday was a perfectly okay day, save for the rather insane morons driving on the roads I traveled.  I narrowly avoided about six idiot drivers running stop signs, veering into my lane without looking or signaling, turning in front of me and cutting me off and lots more.  It was like dodge ‘em cars here in the San Fernando Valley.  I was also alerted that my beloved Corky’s is closing next Sunday.  I did sleep eight hours, so that was good.  I did the usual morning things, and then I went to the mail place and picked up some packages, went to the bank and did some banking, and then got some pizza slices from the nearby pizza place, came home, and ate them all up.  I had two brief visits from two brief visitors, and then we had our first Kritzerland rehearsal with four of our six cast members.  That went very well, and then I headed directly to the Group Rep to begin casting Doug Haverty’s play, In My Mind’s Eye.  We only saw four people, and they were all very good.

Then I stopped at Popeye’s and got the mild-and-yet-they-weren’t spicy breasts, came home, ate them even though I don’t like spicy breasts.  And then it was the music of the night – first a composer called Marcel Poot, whose music I’m enjoying, and then the Molly Goldberg Variations by Bach and Sitkovetsky by way of Menasha Skulnik.  A little Broadway humor for those in the know.

Today, I am sleeping in but not past eleven, I’ll eat something very light, I’ll hopefully pick up packages, and then we have another light casting session at seven, after which I will definitely watch a DGA screener, perhaps Marriage Story or Little Women.

Tomorrow, I do believe I will finally have an entire day and evening to myself.  Thursday, we have our second Kritzerland rehearsal and then I go directly to our brush-up rehearsal, where I will clean up a few things and put in our new Banjo for the weekend.  Friday, I’ll relax and then probably see our show to see our Banjo does.  Saturday, we have a noon o’clock stumble-through, then I’m sure some of us will grab a bite to eat, and then I can watch a couple of movies.  Sunday, we have our sound check and then we do our show.

Oh, and before I forget, here is the birthday cake from the birthday.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, sleep in a bit, eat, hopefully pick up packages, prepare the new Kritzerland year-end releases, have a casting session, and then watch a DGA screener.  Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite theater experiences of 2019? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as I continue listening to the delightfully delightful Molly Goldberg Variations as interpreted by Molly Picon and Jan Murray.
