CAKEWALK

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we had a nice rehearsal for the playlet and as soon as the two actors have their lines down, we’ll be able to start finessing things. I did a little detail work, though, and that was fun. Both actors are very good and fun to work with. And the playlet itself is much improved, I think. Otherwise, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening again to some of the Ormandy box, which really is a fantastic thing. Right now, it’s the Gottschalk/Hershey Kay Cakewalk, which I just love. Beautiful mono sound. And I tried to watch a Sam Fuller movie I’ve never seen even though the Blu-ray has been sitting in the garage like so much fish for years – China Gate. I kept dozing off, so I’ll have to go back and catch what I missed, but I can’t say it’s my favorite Fuller so far. The Gottschalk/Kay is done and now we have Morton Gould’s marvelous Fall River Legend. I have many performances of this and they’re all terrific, but this one is brilliant (conducted by Gould). I made no tracks but might try for one after posting these here notes. Hearing the Cakewalk makes me want to DO the Cakewalk. I think I did do the Cakewalk in a show at some point – can’t remember which show it would have been, though. I didn’t find doing the Cakewalk to be a walk in the park or even a walk on the cake, but it was good exercise.

Yesterday was an okay day, I suppose. I did get nine hours of sleep, got up, answered a plethora of e-mails, did a few things that needed doing, made two count them two Keto tortillas with cheese, salsa, bacon, and sour cream. I tried a new brand of Keto tortilla and not only is it less calories than that other brand (only forty-five per), it tastes MUCH better. Both barely came to 300 calories. Then I had to shave, and then it was time to mosey on over to the theater for rehearsal. I have no idea if any mail or packages came, as I never checked. The rehearsal began at five and we wrapped a bit before seven. We were able to run it straight through four or five times, do detail work, and even do a line-through.

On the way home, I stopped at the Studio City Gelson’s, which really is much superior to my local Gelson’s. Everything in their deli department looks fresher and more appetizing – I almost got a half-rack of ribs, but instead opted for the even more Keto friendly carved turkey breast from the carving station. I got two pieces and some gravy on the side. I came home and ate that, and it was really quite good and very calorie and carb friendly. I had an Atkins treat after. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish and tried to watch China Gate, then shut that off and opted from music. I listened to a bit of Gounod’s Faust again, which I enjoyed, but then went back to Ormandy. I thought about making a track or two, but the five that remain are things I’m not that secure on and all require some listening and then getting them back into my fingers. There are a couple of simple reprise things that I can get done, certainly. The really difficult ones are the act one closer and the act two opener. Those are the big ones, and then there’s a song that is really a montage thing to bridge us through several short scenes – that one isn’t that difficult, but it’s in five or six parts, so I have to figure it out. It’s one of the musical bits that I think may either get cut in half or just eliminated. At the time we were writing that section, I created it because everything seemed choppy. On the other hand, it might work fine. We’re almost fully cast for the reading, but I need to figure out one more female for the Kritzerland show and that’s been hard to do for some reason. Plus, one more guest.

Today, I’ll be up by eleven and I once again must go to storage and find some CDs that we need for the main room. One of the titles I have here in the garage, almost a full box of fifty. The other one I’m rather surprised was low in the main room, as there should have been a full box in waiting. I’ll obviously check there first to make sure, but if it’s not there, I have to go into the room in the basement, where I think that box of 100 will be. I think the room upstairs only goes through L or M. But I’ll check there first, as it’s kind of a pain in the ASS to go down to the basement where the fourth room. I’m going to leave the keys to both of those rooms as I’m going out there way too much and with gas prices what they are, it’s too much driving and mileage. I’m already down to a half-tank in a little over a week and that’s NOT good. Otherwise, I will slog through more tracks, do whatever needs doing, hopefully get more orders, hopefully pick up some packages, eat, and then watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow we have another four o’clock rehearsal and at five our author comes to watch. I’ll chat with him after he’s seen it, and then he’ll leave, and we’ll do our detail and clean-up work. Friday, we have a morning rehearsal, eleven to one, at which I hope our sound folks will be there. Then I’m having a four o’clock meal with Robert Yacko – but I’m only going to have a Caesar salad because a few hours later I’m having a little repast before the nine-thirty tech for our show. Saturday, we have another morning rehearsal, then Sunday they’re doing a run-through of our evening, but we won’t be doing our show because one actress is not with us. We can come in on Monday and run it with sound, lights, and stuff. Then Tuesday we play a preview and then we open it on Thursday and that’s off my plate and it’s right on to the reading.

Well, dear reader, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by eleven, got to storage and hopefully not be there too long, do tracks, hopefully pick up some packages, eat, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as I perhaps attempt to do the Cakewalk, even though cake is not Keto friendly.
