RABBIT HOLES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I went down the newspapers.com rabbit hole again and here I am writing these here notes late and in a rush and in a rush because these here notes will probably go up late. I am typing furiously and words are flying by into sentences that will hopefully fly by into paragraphs. I can tell you with a certainty, for example, that the sequence that opens my very first novel, Benjamin Kritzer, which takes place at the Picfair Theater on a Saturday matinee showing of The Fly happened on August 2, 1958. I can also tell you that I saw Vertigo at the Lido Theater (where it was the bottom half of a double bill, very surprising, although it may have just been listed that way in the newspaper, as I remember the marquee having Vertigo as the main feature) on Wednesday evening, September 17, its opening night. I’d gone looking for The Colossus of New York, the only film I ever saw at the Hawaii Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, although off the beaten path and ever further east than the Pix by at least three blocks. Wikipedia and the imdb have the release date as sometime in June. Well, no. Not in June, not in July, not in August, not in September, and not in October, so who knows when the HELL it played there? Certainly not the imdb or Wikipedia or the book they cadged that date from, Keep Watching the Skies. I gotta tell you. Maybe I’ll keep looking after I get these here notes posted. As I write furiously, I am sitting here like so much fish listening to a LOT of William Walton music, as I also went down that rabbit hole. The rabbit hole can be a very addictive hole, even more addictive than a hole in the head. And after perusing Facebook for a little while earlier I am convinced that many, many people who live there have rather large holes in their heads. Earlier, we had our proper tech, with lights, sound, and mics and it went very well. Too many fumfered lines for my taste, but better to get that out of the way now than with an audience. The sound was better than I thought it would be, so that was good.

Yesterday wasn’t much of a day, day-wise. That is because I got over nine hours of sleep and missed the entire morning and some of the early afternoon. Once up, I answered e-mails, did some stuff that needed doing, shaved and showered and that was about it, really.

I moseyed on over to the Coral Café to sup with my two leading ladies – that was fun. I had a bacon and cheese omelet that was good. But I must say, pancake-style omelets seem to be all the rage these days and I don’t like them nearly as much as a proper omelet where the ingredients are INSIDE, like Hugo’s. Is this a trend? Have I fallen down the omelet rabbit hole?

After that, we went to the theater and got in costume to run the play. They got into their mics for the first time, we used a prop wig for the first time – big laugh for the business I came up with – and other than the fumfering it went quickly and well. I also must say that the weather was just right – about eighty degrees with a light breeze. I hope it stays that way for the run.

After that, I came right home, had a little salami and cheese, a few Keto crackers with salsa, listened to music and went down the newspapers.com rabbit hole, which is why these here notes should have been posted three minutes ago.  I am typing as furiously fast as I can, but when I do that, I must go back and correct all the misspellings and such things.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll eat, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, and then we play an invited dress rehearsal. Hoping that all goes well. We open act two. There’s supposedly a mass curtain call at the end of the show, but I don’t think anyone has either planned it out or told the cast. That will be interesting. Or not. After the run, I’ll give whatever notes I have and that will be that.

Tomorrow will be a catch-up day and night for me, since we don’t have any playlet performance and believe me I need a catch-up day or at the very least a ketchup day. I suppose I could settle for a mustard or mayo day, but one should never settle for such condiments, day-wise. Thursday is our opening night, and I shall be there with bells on, although I haven’t been able to find my damn bells. Maybe they went down a rabbit hole. And then, it’s all prepping for the private reading of Nothing in Common.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, eat, hopefully pick up some packages, have an invited dress rehearsal, and then come home and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What rabbit holes have you gone down lately and how long were you down there and what fun stuff did you find? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where perhaps I’ll go down some dream rabbit holes, too.
