RUMINATING ON RUMINATIONS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, one thing I’ve always prided myself on is to know when something is done, when to move on. And as I see some who still are trying to do these online shows, I just shake my head that they don’t know when to stop – I almost said beating a dead horse – well, I said it, didn’t I? We stopped our shows right when it was time to stop. The glutting of these kinds of shows, of which we were one of the major leaders, was, at its height, just too much and you could feel people starting to resist, at least I could. Too much, too often, and yet on some go. I was and am very proud of all we did, including the Kritzerland shows and the two original shows – Tonight’s the Night and Revenge. They were the poster children for how to do this stuff right and they were that because I got the right people to do them and to play to the strengths of what we were trying to do, rather than hide them. It will be fun to see how long it actually takes them to figure out that the train has left the station. Then it will be fun, at least here in LA, to see when the similar shows to ours come back and where, since the other major club in LA is no longer. These are the ruminations of someone ruminating but now I must move on to ruminate on other things. For example, right now I’m listening to my Brubeck favorite, Points on Jazz, but a version for piano and orchestra, which is very interesting, but doesn’t replace the brilliant original two-piano version. I’m thinking that Sony is in the midst of putting together some definitive Brubeck set (there’s a box, but hardly definitive and whose contents needs new masterings) – I think it because I tried to license it two years ago to no avail because they said none of the Brubeck albums were available. I hope it comes soon – it’s shameful that the Points on Jazz album has never been on CD, the original with pianists Gold and Fizdale, which I’m now listening to, my stereo vinyl copy I transferred to CD years ago. Prior to that, I tried to watch Support Your Local Sheriff, a comic western with a great cast. I saw it when it came out and didn’t love it and I’m finding it still a slog to get through. I think the only comic western I really love is Blazing Saddles. But what a cast – every great character actor doing their thing, and Garner is great. I also finished Gounod’s Romeo and Juliette, which I didn’t love, save for a few orchestral passages that were nice. Can’t love ‘em all.

Yesterday, I got eight hours of sleep, my voice was mostly back in decent shape, and I didn’t do too much. I had two lengthy telephonic conversations, one with our lyricist, mostly about the two songs that I know will get replaced by hopefully better songs that say what needs to be said in a better way. And then with the co-author – we went scene by scene and I told him my general thoughts and how I thought we should address the problems I had – he agreed with all of it – I just told him to ponder for now. We’ll all gather together for a meeting next week. I decided on an Art’s tri-salad with a discount coupon – still way too expensive but I could not thing about lettuce or chicken or eggs and I do think the Keto thing is coming to an end and calorie counting following on its heels. And since I’d already decided it was a splurge day, I had the two pieces of rye bread I told them not to include but which they included. That should satisfy my bread craving and my next craving satisfaction will be pasta and pizza at some point in the next few weeks. The tri-salad was very good and hit the spot.

I did some work on the computer, chose a couple of songs, but mostly was still exhausted from the night before. I did pick up a package – eighteen boxes of Kleenex from Amazon – and a new Blu-ray from Spain of Pepe starring Cantinflas. Someone on some inane Facebook group said he thought it looked and sounded really good, so I took the chance. It’s stereo and does sound good. The color is decent. But here’s how moronic these idiots are on Facebook – the main titles are in scope 2.35 and then it goes to 1.75 for the film. Well, no. That can’t look good, Facebook idiots, because you’re missing a third of the film. It’s shocking in this day and age that this kind of crap happens. And it’s shocking that people who post things on Facebook haven’t a clew as to what the HELL they’re talking about. I wish I could find the post so I could tell that guy a thing or three. Then I watched forty-five minutes of Support Your Local Sheriff, and then I listened to music, and you know all that so I shan’t regurgitate it. And, of course, I ruminated, oh, yes, I ruminated.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll have some telephonic conversations, I’ll eat, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, I’ll choose more songs, then I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow is more of the same and then I’ll see the alternate evening of playlets. Saturday, I’ll see our evening of playlets, then Sunday I can relax. Then next week is busy with meetings and meals and so on and so forth and so forth and so on, not necessarily in that order. Oh, and the Tonight’s the Night Blu-ray will ship. I’ll have them no later than Tuesday, but they’re actually ready and if the guy can pick them up (in Orange County) he’ll get them to me earlier. I can only pray that the final bill tally is what it’s supposed to be, but you never know with these things.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, have telephonic conversations, eat, hopefully pick up some packages, choose more songs, then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: Are you ready to back out into the world in terms of seeing motion pictures and plays and concerts? I know I am. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I’ll perhaps ruminate on ruminations.
