COLD TURKEY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am going cold turkey. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I, BK, am going cold turkey. I’m not going hot turkey, mind you, I am going cold turkey. For the past for nights, I have had an addiction. After posting the notes I have visited the Tube of You and been up until four in the morning watching videos of every kind. It started with those inane sovereign citizen inanities, but then other things are suggested, and I graduated to trial sentencing videos, mostly to do with DUI and murder trials. Then somehow, I graduated to dogs being rescued videos – those are heartwarming for a while, then the irritation factor sets in because they’re all scored with music to tug the heartstrings and one begins to think that it’s all for views and let me tell you these things have millions of views and are all monetized. Why is it necessary to have annoying and treacly music? It’s not is the simple answer. From there, somehow, I got to watching surprise reunion videos, where a parent who’s in the military and has been gone for a year or two surprises their child. Or where some kid’s best friend has moved away but shows up as a surprise. And adoption videos – where a stepparent announces to the child they’ll be adopting them or the child asks the step-parent to adopt. And you just get obsessed with this stuff and boy is it a time waster after a while, so, as mentioned, I am going cold turkey and staying off the Tube of You for a while. As Babs and Donna once said, enough is enough. Otherwise, I am sitting here like so much fish, having just listened to Andre Previn’s violin concerto, which I have only heard once and I remembered nothing of it at all – it’s quite Previn-esque and therefore I liked it very much. And now I’m listening to the early Leonard Bernstein RCA Camden recording of An American in Paris and the Billy the Kid ballet suite. I’ve always loved these performances and it was how I heard both pieces, as I found the Camden album for ninety-nine cents at the supermarket. The fun fact is that these two performances were recorded exactly two days before the birth of someone I know very intimately, namely me. Isn’t that a fun fact? So, these transfers are from discs, of course, but sound very good and would sound perfect if they were mastered freshly today. I also managed to watch a motion picture on DVD entitled The MacKintosh Man, starring Paul Newman, James Mason, and some good British character actors, directed by John Huston. It’s an absolutely horrible movie – convoluted, incomprehensible, obtuse, poorly directed (and yes, all the Huston auteur idiot defend it – it’s not defensible), the musical score is jarring, which is not surprising since it’s by Maurice Jarre, and the actors can do nothing to make the awful script and dialogue work. Walter Hill wrote it and wasn’t happy with his work, and then several other writers took a whack at it, too, and the whole thing is just a mess from start to finish.

Yesterday was a Monday, that much I know. I got a little over eight hours of sleep, answered e-mails, did a few things on the computer, had some telephonic conversations, and then I moseyed on over to Stanley’s at two-thirty for food. There was only one booth of diners, otherwise it was completely empty. I got a nice booth of my own and had my favorite grilled chicken pasta with red onions, broccoli, and cashews. It was great. I had no starter salad, and I had no bread, so it was within my calories. It was great, as always and as always it was great. I came right home, did a few more things on the computer, had a nice visit with one of the cast members of Revenge, who came to pick up her Blu-ray. Then I began my viewing and the rest you know.  And after I post these here notes, I can assure you I shall not be visiting the Tube of You because I have gone cold turkey.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll begin organizing the Group Rep cabaret fundraiser and choosing some of the songs, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, I’ll eat, and then at some point, I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is more of the same. I’ll continue organizing the Group Rep cabaret, I’ll have a Kritzerland work session, I’ll try to find either one or two more people for the Kritzerland show, I’ll drive out to storage, and I have some meetings and meals, too.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, organize the Group Rep cabaret and choose some songs, hopefully pick up some package, eat, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite espionage and spy films? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland and hopefully get this YouTube off my back by going cold turkey.
