FILTERED

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to the marvelously marvelous symphonies of Kurt Atterberg. I do enjoy revisiting these Nordic composers quite oftern and even quite often. Mr. Atterberg’s music is quite beautiful and melodic. In other news, we have replaced the old filter with the new filter, and it seems to have done the trick. The previous filter was quite brown when we removed it, whereas the new filter is quite white, which is what it should be. Since the previous filter had been in place for at least a year and four months and probably longer still, no wonder it was smelly. Things that are brown smell, if you get my drift. So, that problem is solved. Of course, I bought the wrong size and once we realized that I had to run back to the store to get the right size – happily, the store is five minutes from the home environment. I did manage to watch a motion picture last evening, said motion picture entitled Always, starring Richard Dreyfuss and Holly Hunter and directed by Steven Spielberg. I’d heard the soundtrack recently, so I wanted to see the movie again – last time I watched it was back in 2014. I went back and read what I wrote about it then and I basically felt the same way. The script by Jerry Belson is really not so hot – from very silly attempts at comedy for the first third of the film (as bad as Spielberg’s attempts at comedy in 1941), to a lot of serious and seriously florid dialogue But Dreyfuss is very good and Holly Hunter is even better, so you endure the bad bits. Hard to believe the film is thirty-two years old already. But it plays like Spielberg’s Greatest Hits – it just tries too hard. Of course, it’s lovely to have Audrey Hepburn in her final screen role, but she’s given terrible material and her initial scene where for some unknown reason she’s giving the recently deceased Dreyfuss character a haircut, but never actually coming near his hair – I mean, it’s just so weird. The John Williams score works fine, but it, too, plays like a Greatest Hits album. The pacing is very good, though – it really moves along quickly, and Spielberg is a terrific director. This one’s pretty much a misfire, but the fault lies in the script. I’ve also been watching some of those pursuit videos on YouTube – you know, where the police are in pursuit and the person/people fleeing drive for hours trying to elude the pursuers, which, of course, is mostly impossible. There’s something quite fascinating about these, compelling even, because it’s just so hard to believe that people are that stupid with twenty cop cars in pursuit and a police copter following their every move and the news helicopters doing the same. These things can only end in one of several ways – they stop and give themselves up, they crash and are hauled off to jail, they try to run on foot, or, very occasionally, they die.  One I saw yesterday had some guy who carjacked a car with a kid inside. He then left that car, carjacked another car, carjacked another car after that, crashed into several vehicles along the way, hit an officer who was trying to lay down a spike thing, and finally crashed big time and took off on foot, only to be caught shortly thereafter. He got a nice sentence of 160 years. Unfortunately for him, they had a recording of him laughing and bragging how many hits the YouTube videos had gotten and how famous he was. Well, not anymore, moron – no, you’re in jail for the rest of your life and not parole eligible for sixty-eight years.  He cried as the sentence was read. I’m sure everyone felt really bad for him. Not.

Yesterday was certainly a day, wasn’t it? I did get eight hours of sleep and once up I had to quickly answer some e-mails and then I had to mosey on over to the storage place. The helper and I went over everything, and she will be shipping all the Indiegogo stuff over the weekend, so that’s a big load off. We were there about twenty minutes.

Then I went and bought the filter, came home, and waited for Grant to come install it. Whilst waiting, I ordered and received and ate a Chinese chicken salad from Stanley’s – it wasn’t as good as usual, but it was certainly decent. Then Grant came, we realized I got the wrong size, so I ran back and got the right size and he then installed it and that was that. And the other benefit of the new filter is that it cools the house down much quicker and more evenly.

After that, I had some telephonic conversations, then I sat on my couch like so much fish and watched Always. After Always, I began listening to music and here we are, together again.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages and important envelopes, I’ll have a snack to tide me over until my late supper, and then I’ll mosey on over to the theater to watch our playlet, then Marshall Harvey and I will go grab a bite to eat afterwards. Depending on how light my snack is, I could have a chicken fried steak, but would probably be better off having eggs benedict or even better a BLTA. We shall see.

Tomorrow is more of the same, and then next week is super busy planning the Group Rep cabaret, casting the Kritzerland anniversary show, shipping out a LOT of The Sap of Life and Cole Porter III, having some meetings and meals and whatnot.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, hopefully pick up packages and important envelopes, have a small snack, see our playlet, sup afterwards, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite films of Richard Dreyfuss and Holly Hunter? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to be properly filtered once again.
