SLEEPYHEAD

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much zombified fish, listening to the first violin concerto of one Shostakovich – it’s quite haunting and beautiful, as well as quite beautiful and haunting. I was once beautiful and haunting, but that’s another story. And prior to that, I watched the second of the Bill Elliot detective films, this one entitled Sudden Danger. It was the very first feature film by director Hubert Cornfield, who has made some mighty strange films, and not many of them at that. So, this one actually has some style. It’s still a low-budget programmer, but Cornfield is trying his best to at least give it some uniqueness. Mr. Elliot is a bit of a stiff as an actor – he’s probably fine in his cowboy movies – but this one at least has some good actors in it – Tom Drake and Beverly Garland are two of them. Sadly, this one had barely any outside photography so no fun location shots. Running time is brief – sixty-five minutes. Even though listed as a 1955 release (the never right imdb has it released in December of that year), it actually opened as the bottom half of a double bill on the first Wednesday in 1956 – the top half of the bill is actually a film I’ve never even heard of, which is odd – it’s called The Square Jungle, starring Tony Curtis, Pat Crowley, and Ernest Borgnine. It looks like a boxing picture. I did go over to the Group Rep at six-thirty to just clean up stuff with our two actors. I waited around to meet Charlotte Crossley, but she hadn’t arrived by eight, so I came home, stopping at Gelson’s first, buying some of the low-calorie vanilla ice cream, some whipped cream, some maraschino cherries, some slivered almonds and, most importantly, some Mrs. Richardson’s Hot Fudge. I hadn’t eaten anything since nine in the morning, so I made myself a little hot fudge sundae, even though it was Saturday. A little ice cream, some whipped cream, a few slivered almonds, one maraschino cherry, and then I put some of the hot fudge in a microwavable little bowl and heated it for ten seconds, then poured it over the ingredients. That was quite good and refreshing, too. It still wasn’t quite enough to get my calories over 1000, so later I had some sour cream and onion potato chips – a small bag. And then it was music time.

Yesterday was another day of not nearly enough sleep, only five hours or thereabouts. I was up at eight-thirty and out of here a little after nine. I went to Hugo’s and had my beloved pasta papa, which was excellent. I managed to kill ninety minutes there, then went to the mail place and hung out in my car until it was eleven-fifteen, ascertained there was no mail or packages, then came home. She of the Evil Eye was already gone, so that was good. Then I did something I rarely do – I laid down on the bed and instantly fell asleep for two hours, so that was helpful. Once up again, I watched Sudden Danger, then shaved, and them moseyed on over to the theater. Then I did the Gelson’s thing and returned home and the rest you know. Oh, and I also wrote commentary for the first four songs in the show, so that was good, too.

Today, I can sleep until noon, which I hope I will. Once up, I’ll answer e-mails and stuff, and our first singer arrives at one-thirty. We have our full cast, so rehearsals will end around four or four-thirty, I think. I won’t be able to eat until then. I’ll figure out something fun but calorie friendly – perhaps a sandwich of some sort, perhaps a taco and enchilada at Casa Vega if the timing works, or perhaps something else. I’ll write more commentary, and then I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow is a ME day. I hope to sleep in, and then I’ll just rest my voice and take it easy. If I haven’t finished the commentary, I will absolutely finish it. Tuesday is our stumble-through day and I’m sure there’ll be a meal after, somewhere nearby. Then Wednesday, I’ll relax all day and then we have our sound check at five, then we do our show. I know some of us will go downstairs and have food afterwards. Then I have to get to work on the Group Rep cabaret, and, of course, I hope we finally get the Tonight’s the Night CDs. And then they have to get the other two done, as we’re already late shipping those.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, sleep until noon, have our second Kritzerland rehearsal, eat, write more commentary, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping to finally get a good night’s sleep so that I won’t be a sleepyhead for rehearsal.
