August 1, 2021:

IT CAME UPON ME UNAWARES OR HELLO TO AUGUST

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must say that it came upon me unawares. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, it came upon me unawares. It snuck up on me stealthily. It crept up on me and took me by surprise. What exactly came upon me unawares? Well, I’ll tell you so that it doesn’t come upon you unawares. It is August. July went by rather quickly, didn’t it? And suddenly it’s August, just like that. And it is my fervent hope and prayer that August will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful. So it is written, so it shall be done. Otherwise, I am sitting here like so much fish, continuing my listening to the nine Kurt Atterberg symphonies – now playing, number three. And isn’t it a bit ironic that that YouTube fellow who posts a new video every single day, pontificating about classical music, just posted a video about how beautifully melodic the first movement is of – Kurt Atterberg’s third symphony? You can find all the Atterberg symphonies on the Tube of You and you should check them out. And prior to that, I saw what may well be the final performance of the playlet (we won’t know for sure until early next week), and then had a fun meal after with our very own Marshall Harvey and Doug Haverty. I had the eggs Benedict, which is suddenly making me a little nauseous as I sit and write these here notes – hopefully that will abate and sooner than later. We had lots of fun conversation. And prior to that, I did manage to watch a motion picture on a Twilight Time Blu and Ray, Count Yorga, Vampire. I’d never even opened the Blu-ray. It’s considered something of a cult film, but I thought it was quite terrible. Robert Quarry is kind of fun in the title role, but the rest of it is just really low-budget and amateurish, especially the direction, which is from hunger. There are a few nice L.A. location shots circa 1970, but the director is so inept that he doesn’t understand what a good geography shot is. The best of them is the Studio City Du-Par’s. Of course, there are a ton of extras because horror FANatics love these kinds of movies and surprisingly it got pretty strong reviews. But it’s badly photographed, the score is not so hot, but AIP bought it, marketed it well and it made enough dough for a sequel to be made. Interestingly, the on-screen title is The Loves of Count Iorga, Vampire. Knowing AIP, they were probably to cheap to have the title card changed once they came up with their new title.

Yesterday was an uneventful day with no events. I got over ten hours of blessed sleep, not arising until one o’clock. Once up, I answered e-mails, then went and picked up two important envelopes. There was a third surprise important envelope that contained a six-thousand-dollar check – the surprise was they put it in the wrong box, and it wasn’t for me. I returned it as soon as I saw the mistake. It was exciting for about ten seconds.

After that, I came right home, ordered one chicken breast and wing and a small chicken pasta salad from California Chicken Café with a 40% off coupon, it arrived, I ate it all up, and then I watched Count Yorga, Vampire. After that, I shaved and showered and then moseyed on over to the theater and the rest you know.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll eat something light but fun, but mostly I’ll relax and then watch and listen.

Tomorrow is planning the Group Rep cabaret, getting ready to ship a LOT of CDs, banking, and the rest of the week is meetings and meals, a visit from a book dealer, discussing some projects, and whatever else that comes up.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, eat, watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as we give a warm welcome to August, which came upon me unawares – and it is my fervent hope and prayer that August will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful.
