THE STUFF THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I have decided that today’s notes are the stuff that dreams are made of. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I, BK, have decided that today’s notes are the stuff that dreams are made of. Why? Why not? After all, I am in possession of my very own Maltese Falcon replica Maltese Falcon and I also watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray called The Maltese Falcon, starring Mr. Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Sidney Greenstreet, Elisha Cook, Jr., Peter Lorre and others, written and directed by John Huston and adapted from the novel by Dashiell Hammett. It is a motion picture classic that I simply do not know as well as I should – I have seen it all the way through exactly twice. Why is that? I know it’s a classic, it smells like a classic, feels like a classic, and IS a classic, so why don’t I love it like it’s a classic? I certainly enjoy it, but I have simply never loved it. On the other hand, I love The Big Sleep, so go know. That one I can watch all the time and it never gets old. But that is not the one that dreams are made of, The Maltese Falcon is the one that dreams are made of. Oh, well, I suppose I’ll be the contrarian, although I must stress again that I certainly enjoy it. Otherwise, I am sitting here like so much tired fish, finishing up the Juilliard String Quartet box set. Some of the music herein is a little TOO modern for the likes of me, but there are many, many gems and all the performances are wonderful. There are several other box sets, too – their Epic recordings, their RCA recordings, maybe even their Sony stereo recordings. I’ll have to check out what’s on them. That was pretty much the evening. Oh, and here’s the opening day add for the stuff dreams are made of.

Yesterday was a day in which I did not get enough sleep, a little under six hours, and because I did not get enough sleep the night before, I was a little low energy and lethargic, so much so that when the singer arrived, she asked if I was feeling okay. I had to shave and shower as soon as I got up at ten, and the singer arrived at eleven. She has tracks of the songs in the act, so we went through everything, I made some notes on patter things to adjust, got an idea for one additional song for a little sequence on romance – it’s a really cute idea but it involves a young person, and I don’t know if that’s going to be feasible or not. I’m thinking about it and may query the parents of an eleven-year-old about what it would entail. I do know it would work really well. In any case, we worked for two hours, and we’ll rehearse next week, and we’ll start getting the act on its feet in terms of little staging bits and starting to work on the performances and patter fixes.

After that, I went right to the mail place and picked up some packages and one important envelope, so that was good. The other important envelope should have arrived a week ago and it’s disturbing that it hasn’t and equally disturbing that I can’t get a response about it. If I don’t have said response by the time I get up today, then I’ll have to get strong about it, which I’d prefer not to do, but I can’t wait this long. I did some banking, then stopped at Gelson’s to see about food. I ended up getting two slices of pepperoni pizza from the Wolfgang Puck stand. It always looks really good, but I’d tried a slice twenty years ago and hadn’t liked it. I also got a small chicken Caesar for later. I ate the two slices, and they were pretty much as I remembered them – okay, but some weird spice somewhere that doesn’t do the slices and favors in its flavors.

Then I did a few things on the computer, then finally sat on my couch like so much fish and dozed off for an hour. Then I watched The Maltese Falcon, and now I’m listening to Samuel Barber’s Hermit Songs sung by Leontyne Price. It’s included in the Juilliard set because it was a coupling on one of their albums. It’s a nice change of pace, actually.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages and find out about the other important envelope or actually receive it, I’ll eat, and then I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

The weekend is for me to catch up on sleep, to catch up on listening and viewing, and to relax and get ready for upcoming stuff that’s upcoming. Then next week is already filling up with meetings, meals, and rehearsals. Also, I’m hoping to get all the musical materials to the company who’s licensing A Carol Christmas and then those dear readers with ties to theater groups can suggest they do the show, which is a ton of fun.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, hopefully pick up some packages and find out about the other important envelope or actually receive it, eat, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray player? I’ll start – CD, the rest of the quartets box. Blu-ray, not quite sure what’s next. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall dream of the stuff that dreams are made of.
