TEENY-TINY TYPE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, writing these here notes on my teeny-tiny Macbook Air from 2011 whilst listening to Bernard Herrmann’s marvelous score from the motion picture Taxi Driver, from a time when film music actually meant something and did its job. This was Mr. Herrmann’s final score and he passed away the night he finished recording it, December 23, 1975. And what a loss it was for film music. And speaking of teeny-tiny, when did it become a thing in motion pictures to do the end credits in the smallest font possible? Whose brilliant idea was that? And I saw a film last night where even the main titles were in the smallest type size I’ve ever seen. It’s ridiculous. And tiny. And stupid. And unreadable. I did manage to watch four motion pictures yesterday prior to music listening. It was nice to just zone out after this last week of horror. I began with the fourth Indiana Jones thing, and it was as terrible as I remembered and I don’t ever need to see it again. It’s certainly well cast, and it’s great to have Karen Allen back, but the script is from hunger and it’s Spielberg in Temple of Doom mode – action sequences that go on forever, a story that took many years to be this bad, not to mention a cadre of writers. The one they ended up with was terrible. And I’m just gonna say it – I cannot stand this cameraman, who, I believe has done every Spielberg film since. After that, I watched a dank and dreary “revenge” film called Harry Brown, starring Michael Caine, kind of a Gran Torino/Death Wish thing. I like those kinds of films, but this one was just dank and dreary and badly paced – that said, Mr. Caine was terrific. That was the one with the tiniest type. Third was something called Honest Thief, from last year, starring Liam Neeson, one of his “action” things, but not really. It was short and rather silly, but enjoyable in its silly way. And finally, it was Domestic Disturbance, starring John Travolta. Apparently, I watched it back in 2014 on the Flix of Net, but so unmemorable it must have been that I didn’t remember any of it. It’s a strictly by the numbers thriller from 2001, directed by Harold Becker, who had a brief career as an A-list filmmaker. The actors are fine but there isn’t a single thing in the film you haven’t seen a hundred times before. And there you have a report on four films in one long paragraph.

Yesterday was quite the nothing little day. I was up at eight-thirty and out of the house by nine and to Uncle Bernie’s deli by nine-fifteen. I had a bacon and cheese omelet and a bagel. I ended up not going to the used CD store and just went to the mail place and picked up a small package. Then I came home and waited for my noon o’clock senior tech call, which never came. What came were e-mails saying they were trying to call and not getting through. That made no sense to me as he’s called me so many times. Maybe he used my old number or something, but I kept e-mailing him back and hopefully I’ll hear from him – I gave him my cell, too. It’s very important I talk to him so I can schedule a callback for Monday when the computer comes home. Then I had a small amount of Taco Bell for my evening snack. And then it was four movies.

Today, I’ll be up by eleven or so, then we have a noon-thirty rehearsal with the singer and then I’ll figure out what food it shall be – kind of wanting that Panda Express again, just not the Kung Pao chicken, which just wasn’t very good. Then I can watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow is hopefully the day when the computer comes back home and hopefully it will be working splendidly and I’m praying that all the apps are still there and that the password keychain is working. That would be sooooo wonderful. Otherwise, I have some catching up to do, and hopefully the helper’s mom is home and will begin shipping. She just doesn’t respond in a timely fashion (I texted her yesterday), but I can’t have this go on any longer. If it does, I’m going to have to find someone to go to her house and get the computer and shipping supplies and get everything shipped. I don’t know who that’s supposed to be but the mom will have to give them a quick training. I’m getting ten e-mails a day from unhappy customers and I can’t deal with it anymore. Hoping she’ll come through and get it done. The rest of the week is more of the same along with some meetings and meals, and then starting on Thursday we rehearse every day and then do the singer’s show on Sunday, so that will be fun.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by eleven or so, hopefully hear from the senior tech, have a rehearsal, eat, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping that Hollywood gets over the teeny-tiny type thing very soon.
