BEING A LAZY LOAFER ON A SATURDAY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, having listened to some stuff for an upcoming Kritzerland show project, a new series we’ll be starting next year and that we’re all very excited about, and not listening to the first symphony of the excellent composer Karol Rathaus – haven’t heard these since I got the CDs last year, but really like his music quite a bit and I don’t care who knows it. Earlier, I finished watching the Miyazaki film, Howl’s Moving Castle, based on the book Howl’s Moving Castle. It’s not my favorite Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli film, but it’s fun and looks gorgeous, with excellent voice actors and another terrific score from Joe Hisaishi. And I watched the first twenty minutes of another anime, this one entitled Mary and the Witch’s Flower, based on the novel The Little Broomstick. It’s directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who did the lovely When Marnie Was Here. This, however, is not a Studio Ghibli film, it’s a Studio Ponoc film, which was started by a former Ghibli film. Several Ghibli people came over to Studio Ponoc so you’re just getting more of the same, but without some of the guiding lights at Ghibli. In fact, the first twenty minutes of the film almost play like Miyazaki’s Greatest Hits and I’m pretty sure it will continue like that. It’s beautiful to look at, but the storytelling just isn’t quite as clean as the Ghibli films. But I have to finish it in order to be able to talk about it, so I’ll do that today. And prior to that, I had some napping episodes and just kind of being a lazy loafer.

Yesterday, I was up at eight-thirty after only five hours of sleep or so. I was out of the house at nine and decided on Hugo’s for the breakfast. I had pasta papa – not the best batch they’ve made, but fine. After that, I drove around for a bit, went to the mail place and picked up some packages from the day before, and then finally came home just as she of the Evil Eye was making her exit, so, good timing. I had several telephonic conversations during the day and dozed off a few times. Then I finished Howl’s Moving Castle, had a chocolate chip muffin top I’d gotten at Gelson’s, then watched the first twenty minutes of Mary and the Witch’s Flower.

Then it was another couple of telephonic conversations, catching up on e-mails and texts (a lot of Sondheim-related stuff), posted two Sondheim song recordings I did to Facebook – lesser-known stuff – and then for my evening meal I got a Chinese chicken salad from Stanley’s. It arrived about thirty minutes later and it was very good. And that was about it – a fairly uneventful day and evening, which was fine by the likes of me.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll try to write a few pages, but mostly I want to relax, finish the movie, watch another movie, pick up the packages that arrived yesterday after I’d already been to the mail place, eat, and then watch more, listen, and relax.

This entire week is writing, meetings and meals, a work session for the Kritzerland holiday show, starting to figure out the young people show for January, so the kids have plenty of time to learn stuff, some Zoom sessions with David Wechter, and some serious thinking about the new book ideas that are rolling around in my head. And then, another opening at the Group Rep to see, their upstairs holiday show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, write a few pages, finish a movie, watch another movie, eat, pick up packages, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have been a lazy loafer on a Saturday.
