A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am happy to report that I, BK, finally had a good night’s sleep, so good that I slept almost twelve hours and I truly and desperately needed that. And it came in the nick of time, because had I not gotten it, I know I would have gotten sick. If I get another night or two of good sleep, I’m pretty confident I’ll avoid that. Otherwise, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to the last of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, which I’m finding very enjoyable. Prior to that, I actually watched a motion picture courtesy of the Firestick thing and Amazon Prime, said motion picture being entitled Mission: Impossible III. I’d seen the first one and the second one, neither of which I cared for much – the first directed by Brian de Palma being the better of the two, and the second, directed by John Woo, not up to his considerable standards. I missed III but did see IV and didn’t like IV. I haven’t seen V or VI but those are on Amazon Prime, too, so perhaps I’ll watch them. III is directed by J.J. Abrams and I have to say I thought it was quite horrible. The script, of course, is ludicrous, but in a particularly J.J. Abrams way. He starts with his usual nonsense – a tense scene that ends with us going back some weeks prior to see what got us there, something he did on Alias all the time. This was his directorial debut and it’s all shakycam crap and edits every two seconds in the action sequences, right out of every Bourne movie. I’ve seen a few of his other films, too, and they’re all the same. I can’t stand action sequences that have not an ounce of believability to them, all created in the computer. Philip Seymour Hoffman is the villain and he’s okay, while Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise, and we’ve all seen his shtick too many times for it to be that effective anymore and it’s not. Every cliché from the last two decades is here, every “twist” or betrayal can be seen from a mile away. I did watch to the end, just because I was comfortable on my couch. I wonder if the next two are any good – new director who seems to be doing all of them now – Christopher McQuarrie. And then it was suddenly to write these here notes, and in tried-and-true fashion, that is precisely what I am doing.

Yesterday was short, mostly due to the almost twelve hours of sleep, not arising until two o’clock. It took some time to get coherent, as you might imagine, but once I was, I began futzing and finessing, but once again there was quite a bit of it to do, although none of the really major stuff I’ve had to do several times. I ordered in, a Chinese chicken salad from Stanley’s – trying to do salads more than I have. That arrived about twenty minutes later and I ate it all up whilst finishing the futzing and finessing. I had a couple of small pieces of bread, too, because I forgot to tell them not to include it – I hate when that happens.

After that, I wrote about seven pages, took a little break, then did five more for a total of twelve. Since I was ahead by three pages, that made fifteen, but I’ll try to do three more after I post these here notes, just so I can end the chapter I’m on and do the first few lines of the next chapter. I guess I can reveal that after I do that, I’m slightly over two-thirds of the way through. I’ll also take a nice hot shower before bed.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll futz and finesse, I’ll write new pages, I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, and then I have a belated birthday dinner with the Staitman mom and daughter at Ruth’s Chris, so that should be fun, and we know the food will be great. Then I’ll come home and write more pages, and then watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, I have a work session for the Kritzerland show, otherwise it’s all writing all the time, with breaks for food and relaxing. Friday will be more of the same and so will Saturday and Sunday. Then we begin the Kritzerland rehearsal week, so a very busy week ahead, leading to our Kritzerland show on Sunday. I’m looking forward to working with all our young people, and, of course, I have to write the commentary at some point.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, futz and finesse, write new pages, hopefully pick up packages, have a belated birthday dinner, write more pages, then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, so happy to have had a good night’s sleep.
