CATCHING UP

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I have been doing a lot of catching up. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I, BK, have been doing a lot of catching up. Can one who is catching up also catch down? For example, I caught up on the project I’m working on with David Wechter and that involved writing a lengthy scene for the screenplay we’re doing, and when I say lengthy scene, I’m talking about an almost four-page monologue. But I had fun writing it and got it all done. I’m still catching up on forwarding CD orders, and I still have three sets of liner notes to do, so not done with the catching up until probably Friday. We also had our first Kritzerland rehearsal – eleven young people. I love working with young people – they’re fearless, haven’t learned to be phony or have artifice – they take direction really well. And it’s always so weird seeing the young people who’ve been doing our shows for years grow up before our very eyes, especially after a two-year break. Hadley Belle Miller was eight when she began with us – she’s now sixteen and getting ready for her college auditions soon. She’s a whole new person. Ellie Birdwell, who was in A Carol Christmas at the Group Rep is now fourteen and almost as tall as I am. We have several really young’uns in the show this time, including a seven-year-old bundle of dynamite. And one young person, I think she must be sixteen, flew in from Wichita to do the show. And she’s going to blow people away – just an amazing voice. But they’re all doing great, I chose really good songs for them. It was a very long rehearsal, but we had so much fun.

Yesterday was a fine little day. I got nine-and-a-half hours of sleep and once up I answered a lot of e-mails, did a few things on the computer, then went for a quick Taco Bell run, just to tide myself over until after rehearsal. Then I shaved and got ready. Rehearsal began at three and ended around seven-forty-five.

After that, I ordered a chicken sandwich from Kluckin’ Chicken and that arrived about twenty minutes later and was very good. Then I began writing on the screenplay and that took about two hours or thereabouts. Once I finished that, then I had two telephonic conversations and then it was time to write these here notes, which, in case you haven’t been paying attention, is exactly what the HELL I’ve been doing. And I’m in the process of uploading a three-CD set of Puccini’s Il Trittico.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, then I have a two o’clock lunch with Sami and her mom at one of our favorite jernts, so that will be fun. Then I’ll hopefully pick up some packages, after which I’ll come home and have a Zoom with David Wechter. When that’s done, the evening can be mine all mine and that will be lovely. I’ll watch, listen, and relax, and I don’t care who knows it.

Tomorrow, I have a production meeting about L.A. Now and Then in the evening and prior to that I can probably relax, which would be a lovelier than lovely thing. Thursday is our second rehearsal – we start at four and end around eight-thirty, so another long one. Friday, we’re definitely going to see Cindy Williams’ show out in Palm Desert. Thankfully, it’s at seven and we’ll leave for home right after, as she can’t see anyone after the show because they forbid it, thanks to all the Covid stuff. Then on Saturday we do our stumble-through and then a few of us will sup. I’ll rest my voice and relax in the evening. And then Sunday is sound check and then we do our show. There will be lots of photographs, I assure you.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, have a lunch, hopefully pick up packages, have a Zoom, and then I’ll watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite chicken dishes? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have been catching up.
