ENTER FIXES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, some people enter laughing, I enter fixes, which is all I’ve been doing for hours and hours. One problem is trying to read my own scribbles, but eventually I get it – it just takes time. I began entering fixes at around one in the afternoon. I finished at around ten-thirty, and I must tell you I did not take all that many breaks. But it’s done and gone off to one of the proofers already, who I’m quite certain will find many more typos and things that I missed and that missed me. One’s eyes do get weary and hard to focus when typing for six or seven hours in a row. I watched nothing and I listened to nothing and vice versa. But as I write these here notes I am, in fact, listening to the Chausson symphony in Bb major, which is quite lovely and conducted to a fare-thee-well by one Charles Munch. I wonder what this Munch box set goes for these days? Let’s find out. Cheapest Amazon price – $850. That’s why you always want to get these sets when they come out. The Andre Previn RCA box set, which I got on day one of its release, a mere six months later was double the original price and right now the cheapest Amazon price is $1,799. Yikes. Where was I? Oh, yes, enter fixes and laughing.

Yesterday was a day in which I was very overtired, having only gotten about three hours of sleep. I gotta tell you. I was up at six and could not fall back asleep. Instead, I finished writing a lyric for a new song for L.A. Now and Then. Lanny asked me if he could write the tune and that’s fine by me. I was out of the house by nine and went to Art’s Deli and had a bacon, cheese, and scallion omelet and hash browns – very good. I did an hour of proofing there. Then I picked up a couple of packages, went to Gelson’s and got some salad stuff and some shrimp to put in it. I came home around noon and finished proofing.

I answered e-mails and stuff, then began entering fixes at one. I worked until four, took a small break, then worked from five to eight, took a ten, and then worked from eight to ten and finished. I made some homemade thousand island for the shrimp salad. I washed the shrimp, but I must say they smelled to high hell. I cut them up and put them in the salad. Even after washing, they still smelled really strong. So, I dressed the salad and took a bite of the shrimp in dressing – I spit it out instantly and thank goodness I didn’t swallow it. It was completely rancid. I’ll be informing them of this when next I’m there. I should have known just from the rotten smell. Had I swallowed it I think I would have had a bout of food poisoning. So, I needed something, so I ordered via Uber Eats some pad Thai from a local jernt. It arrived thirty minutes later. It wasn’t great but it wasn’t bad – and I ate it all up, since I’d had nothing since breakfast.

Today, I’ll be up by eight-thirty and out of here by nine-fifteen for our first casting session. I have no idea who’s coming or how many. We go ten to one. Then I’ll come home and relax for a bit, then I have a four-thirty meal and meeting. After that, I’ll come home and watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, it’s back to the project with David Wechter. I still have to write the two sets of liner notes, and then I’ll get the book to the other proofers so we can get all that done. And I have to start prepping the production of L.A. Now and Then. Once I have all the corrections back and I’ve entered them, then Grant Geissman gets it and we do the design, and Doug Haverty creates the cover. And then we get it to the publisher.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by eight-thirty and out of here by nine-fifteen, I must have a casting session until one, I must relax, I must have a meeting/meal, and then I must watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, so happy to enter fixes.
