SPRUCING UP L.A. NOW AND THEN FOR 2022

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I’ve spent almost the entire evening updating the L.A. Now and Then script. Two new songs replacing two that went gone with the wind, a new sketch, doing some updates on a sketch, and especially removing stuff that I cut during the rehearsals when we originally did the show – I guess I never got around to making those excisions. Fortunately, I have the entire show, so I just had to watch and make the cuts. Meanwhile, Richard Allen can’t find his show book, which is a problem – I have the rest of the band charts from when we did the show, but not his show book, which means he has it somewhere. Hopefully, he’ll find it. I also watched the first episode of Ozark, but didn’t really care for it much, so probably won’t continue. A whole lotta mumbling going on. What’s amazing to me in terms of a couple of the sketches is how dated they’d become in just six years. But I fixed all but one of them and since the one I didn’t fix is a David Wechter sketch, I’ll leave that update to him. Still looking for the Robert Yacko actor, and still looking for two more cast members, one male, one female. And on we go.

Yesterday was a kind of productive day. I got seven hours of sleep, I think, got up, answered e-mails and then had a long two-hour Zoom session with David Wechter – we’re finally nearing the finish line of this thing. It’s way too long and we’re gonna have to really hack away at it on the second draft. But the plot’s fun and the characters are really good, I think. That really wore me out, I must say and have said.

Then I went to Gelson’s for foodstuffs. I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to go to the motor car knowing it’s going to start right up – peace of mind is a beautiful thing. I got some tuna and two onion roles for sandwiches, and I also got some potato chips and a thing of Planters peanuts for snacks. I ate the two sandwiches, and they were really good, and the only other things I ate were a handful of peanuts and about twelve potato chips – so, a pretty good day, calorie-wise. I shall endeavor to repeat the good calorie count days for a few weeks now.

I then had a second Zoom thing with someone from the UK and that was fun and could lead to something fun later in the year. We shall see what we shall see. Then I watched the episode of Ozark, but I found it typical of those kinds of Breaking Bad type series, filled with crooks and characters I don’t really feel like investing in. I did want to see Julia Garner, but she wasn’t in episode one.

After that, I buckled down, Winsocki, and made all the fixes to the L.A. Now and Then script, which took over three hours. And then it was Howdy Doody time – I mean, time to write these here notes.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll check up and see when the navigation module is coming in so I can plan when I’ll need to go pick it up, I’ll pay a visit to the mail place – haven’t been since Wednesday – I’ll eat something, perhaps in a restaurant, then I need to watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow will be more of the same. I’ll be writing three sequences for the project with David Wechter, I’ll be making blocking notes in my script so I can stage stuff quickly, and I’ll have the video with me at rehearsals just for reference purposes. We begin learning music on Wednesday evening, we learn choreography on Thursday and again on Saturday, so that will be good. Then the following Tuesday, we begin rehearsing in earnest.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, check to see when the navigation module will be in, hopefully pick up packages, eat, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What cable series on things like Netflix and Amazon Prime and Hudu and Voodoo have you really enjoyed? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to be sprucing up L.A. Now and Then for 2022.
