ASSEMBLING THE SHOW

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I got us through the entire show during yesterday’s six-hour rehearsal, despite missing four people. It was very rough, but we sang through everything, we walked the solos that just had a few movements during the number, and it was fun to see it become a glimmer of what we all hope it will be. Still a lot of work to do before we can begin run-throughs. I have to stage the two new songs that involve groups, and the biggie remains the wrestling match, which I can’t do until they get the gym mats. Our cast is very good and getting more comfortable the more we run things. Our musical director was with us and that’s always VERY helpful. Thankfully, the next time we’ll be in the theater the stage will be taped out, showing where the set is and that will help everyone immeasurably. Anyway, it was fun and I very much like our final cast member, who joined our merry troupe and has a good energy and look. I wasn’t sure how many people were going to be in two of the numbers – the world was my oyster, really – so, in the second act number I opted for a classic musical revue look – four people. That’s what I was going to do for the act one number, four or five, but listening to it I began to think it should be bigger, so it will probably be eight or even more. After the rehearsal, I came home and began forwarding a plethora of orders to the helper so she can start shipping the new titles. I ordered from the Cheesecake Factory and this time the order wasn’t cancelled, so that was good and good was that. I had the farfalle with roasted garlic, chicken, sundried tomatoes and it was very good. Then I watched a rather silly motion picture entitled The Protégé, directed by Martin Campbell, who did the first of the Daniel Craig Bond films, Casino Royale. It’s a thriller, rather violent, ridiculous dialogue, and decent performances. It’s thankfully not too long, but in the end it doesn’t quite know what it wants to be and that’s a disaster in the making – and since it only grossed eight million dollars, that’s a big disaster because I’m sure it must have cost upwards of eighty million. Always fun to see Michael Keaton and Samuel Jackson having a good time and the leading lady is good, too – Maggie Q.

Yesterday was a perfectly okay day. I only got about three hours of sleep, finally getting up at eight-thirty. I had no time to tarry or dally, so I got myself together (no mean feat) and was out the door by nine o’clock. I went to the Studio City Gelson’s and got a cake for our assistant director, who’s birthday it was yesterday. We took a fifteen-minute break at noon-thirty and surprised her with it. That was fun and boy was she surprised.

Other than the things I’ve already mentioned, I listened to more of the LPs I transferred – it’s fun hearing all this music.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll do whatever needs doing, I’ll do some writing, then I’m meeting Robert Yacko for some foodstuffs, then I can watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow will be more writing and catching up on stuff, and then Tuesday we’re back rehearsing for three evenings, then back on Saturday. I have a bunch of other stuff, too, and hopefully I’ll get it all done.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, do whatever needs doing, do some writing, dine, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have roughly assembled the show.
