BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we’re back in the saddle again doing the show and it was a very good show with a very quiet audience. A few laughers, but this was one of those odd audiences that enjoyed the show but couldn’t or wouldn’t laugh out loud. But the cast didn’t let it bother them, so that was good. One of our actresses couldn’t do the Hullaballoo dance – she’s a bit sore from her second car accident in four days, so our backstage gal, Linnea, filled in for just that number and did great. Hefty mitts for numbers, just sans laughter. But the heartening thing was the size of the audience. Friday nights for the past two shows has been very difficult for the Group Rep – very small houses on Fridays. But we had over half a house and that was great, and most seats were paid admissions. If we can start doing that kind of business for all three performances, then we’ll be fine. My hope is that the word of mouth will continue to be strong, and we’ll start filling the houses regularly. I guess we’ll know more this evening.  Adryan Russ, lyricist for two songs in the show, was with us as was her ever-lovin’ Dale, and Kay Cole and her ever-lovin’ Michael Lamont were there, too. I think Adryan really liked the wonderful gal who does our song, The Black Dahlia. And she liked our wonderful gal who did her other song, A Home in Laurel Canyon, which she wrote with Shelly Markham. Anyway, it was a fun evening, sound was relatively smooth, and the theater was cool – it was hot outside even as the show finished. I hate when it’s this hot and hopefully it will cool down this weekend. And now, as I write these here notes, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra is doing a very appealing reading of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella suite.

Yesterday was certainly a day of some sort, I’m just not sure WHICH sort. I did get eight hours of sleep, got up at noon o’clock, answered e-mails, had a long telephonic conversation with the author of a book about Partridge Family music, so that was fun and I’ll finally meet him in person on Tuesday in Las Vegas – he’s also speaking. Then food arrived – an Eyetalian cold cuts sandwich from Numero Uno, with a little side salad. The sandwich was decent, but I guess I was expecting more. Next time I’ll just get the personal pepperoni pizza, which is what they do well. After eating, I did some stuff on the computer, then shaved for the first time since last Saturday, showered, and then it was already time to mosey on over to the theater.

I arrived at six-thirty, and we ran the wrestling scene and tightened everything up and fixed the stuff that was robbing the movement of its illusion. And it went much better in the show itself. It was nice to see our cast again. Then we did the show, and I came home after stopping at Gelson’s for some Entenmann’s chocolate donuts and some Swiss Vanilla ice cream. I had a donut for a snack, and it was excellent.

Today, I’ll be up at eight-thirty and out the door at nine, as she of the Evil Eye will be here for the first time in four weeks. I’ll go have a light breakfast somewhere – I have to choose between two places – then I’ll do stuff until it’s time to come home. Once home, I’ll relax until it’s time to go to the theater. We have our alternate sound gal tonight, so I’ll sit with her to make sure that all goes smoothly, then we’ll do the show. Sami’s mom is coming and bringing five other people. I’ll meet them at five-thirty at some Eyetalian jernt in Toluca Lake. Not sure I’ll eat, maybe just a salad or an appetizer of some sort, as I’ll want to head to the theater about six-twenty or thereabouts.

Tomorrow is our matinee, and we do a talkback afterwards – hoping that will be fun. And then, I’m going out for a nice meal and I don’t care who knows it. Monday is a ME day and catching up day, then Tuesday I’ll hopefully arrange for someone to get me to the airport for the flight to Las Vegas at eleven-thirty, and hopefully arrange for someone to pick me up at nine. Since I won’t have eaten, perhaps a little meal after would be fun.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up at eight-thirty, have a light breakfast, relax, join Sami’s mom and group for a salad or something, then mosey on over to the theater for our evening show. Hoping we have another decent-sized house. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite works of Mozart – oh, wait – what are your favorite works of one Igor Stravinsky? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to be back in the saddle again doing our show.
