ROLLER COASTERY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to – to – nothing. Why is that? Why am I listening to nothing? Am I enjoying listening to nothing? I find listening to nothing kind of a nothing experience, don’t you? Well, perhaps I should rectify that, oh, yes, perhaps I should rectify that. Okay, I am now listening to something rather than nothing, the something being Mr. Henry Mancini’s original score for Breakfast at Tiffany’s – not the famous re-recording, but the original soundtrack, a great score and a personal favorite. I’m glad I rectified the nothing with something. I did manage to watch a motion picture earlier and while it seemed a bit familiar at times, I can find no record of having seen it before. It’s one of those John Grisham legal things, this one called Runaway Jury, and while it’s a bit silly, I found it enjoyable in its way, no thanks to the usual bad direction of Gary Fleder. The cast is what makes it watchable, including Gene Hackman, John Cusack, Rachel Weisz, Dustin Hoffman, Bruce Davison and many others. It does move along and it’s always watching a courtroom thriller, so despite the silly things and the bad direction, it’s pretty good. And now, I’m writing these here notes, accompanied by Mr. Mancini’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Yesterday was a bit too roller coastery for my taste. I got up at eleven-thirty after about seven hours of sleep, had an irritant first thing that I had to deal with and thankfully thanks to a bit of a miracle, I dealt with it, the I had to jump right on the phone meeting at noon o’clock. While I can’t really talk about the content of the meeting, it went very well and was very interesting and now we’ll see where it leads, if anywhere. We’re hoping it leads somewhere. That phone meeting lasted a little more than ninety minutes. Then I made some spaghetti with butter and cheese – about five ounces. Then I finally got back to the book and did my little nitpicks and I’m finding a lot of what I’d fixed from my hard copy proofing wasn’t working for me so I’ve been changing it back but I did figure out a way to get what I was going for by simply removing some punctuation here and there.

Then after two hours of that, I took the movie break, had more telephonic conversations, got the news that I’ll be seeing the first cut of episode ten today, which I’m really looking forward to, then I went back to the book and got a bit past page 200 so I can probably finish this go-through by Wednesday or Thursday. Then I don’t touch it again until we have the designed book, and then I’ll do one more time through for spelling and typos. I had a small Taco Bell snack in the evening, just because. And that was the day and evening.

Today, I’ll be up by eleven at the latest, I’ll do the usual stuff, maybe do a few more pages of the book, and then I’ll mosey on over to Marshall Harvey’s abode to see episode ten. After we watch, then we’ll go back and do our usual finessing and I’m sure there’ll be some to do only because this episode has five musical numbers in it. After we’re finished, I’ll stop at the mail place and see if there’s anything there, then I’ll pick something up for food, then come home. I’ll have Marshall upload episodes eight, nine, and ten to my Dropbox folder so I can watch those and see if there’s anything else we need to do. I already have a few notes on the other episodes, very minor, and that way we can get to work on doing those last little nitpicks. I may have another phone meeting after I get home, and then I’ll continue on the book stuff, and then maybe watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is more of the same and I’m hoping we can do the final stuff on Sami, and I have a lunch meeting at some point, probably towards the end of the week and I’ll finish the book stuff and hopefully Grant Geissman can do the book design. This one’s much simpler to do and it should go very quickly, at least that’s the hope. Not sure what’s up on the weekend, but it may be more of the same.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by eleven at the latest, do the usual things, see the first cut of episode ten, finesse anything that may need finessing, hopefully pick up some mail, eat, maybe have a quick phone meeting, do the book stuff, then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your all-time favorite Mancini scores and songs? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping for a not so roller coastery day today.
