SUPER MONDAY WITHOUT THE BOWL

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, what an odd Sunday it was, yesterday’s Super Bowl Sunday. First of all, I have never once watched a football game and I wasn’t about to start yesterday. I’d planned to sleep in, but I was up at eleven after seven hours of sleep. I did take a bowl out so it would be Super Bowl Sunday. It was a nice bowl. Then I attended to a little extra thing that goes at the end of the new book and got that done. Then I did a bit of writing and got that done. I ordered a small personal pizza from Gino’s East, which does the Chicago-style deep dish pizza thing. It gets raves so why not finally give it a try. It arrived an hour later, still hot. I got pepperoni on it. For a little nine-inch pizza it was way too expensive. So, I had piece one (I had to make the pieces, it doesn’t come sliced) and it was a bit odd – a lot of sauce, cheese, and not much pepperoni in a think pie with big crust. I ate all but one slice because it was very filling, but in the end my tummy did not respond well to the acidic sauce (slightly sour, too), although I’m finally feeling better now. It wasn’t nausea, it was just sitting there like so much fish, not digesting well. After that, I sat on my couch like so much fish and for an hour tried to find something I was interested in watching, but there was nothing. I found that utterly amazing. Maybe I wasn’t in the mood for anything.

Then I had a few telephonic calls, and I don’t really know where the time went, but that was it for the day and even the evening. How can that be? In any case, I am now sitting here like so much fish, listening to Bill Conti’s excellent score for the John Cassavetes film, Gloria. I knew I had it on CD and whilst looking in a box for something else, there it was. I’d grabbed it from YouTube a couple of months ago, but it sounded awful. The CD sounds great. So, I don’t know what those folks who are uploading are doing, but the sound is very degraded. I’ve grabbed stuff from YouTube that sounds fine, so I don’t know what they’d be doing but whatever it is they should learn how to do it properly.

I didn’t eat anything else besides the pizza, so that was good. Oh, I remember, I tried to take a nap and did fall asleep but the pizza was still not digesting and so I kept waking up, but I was at least in bed for an hour or so. Then I tried for a second time to find something to watch and came close to taking a chance on a movie called Pearl, a horror film that everyone seems to think is the berries. I’m not a real fan of today’s horror films, which are just too excessively violent and over-the-top, which is why I like the two Orphan films so much because they aren’t that, and neither is M3GAN. They could have been, but those directors let the tale be told without resorting to all that stuff. That’s my kind of horror movie. In the end, after reading about what the gore consists of, I passed. It’s not supposed to be as gory over over-violent as the first film in what’s becoming a series, the first film being X. That one sounds really disgusting. They do sound like they have elements that I’d like – quirky humor and all – but I just can’t do the slasher violence. And won’t. Don’t ask me. Then I just began listening to music whilst doing a few things on the computer. And then it was time to write these here notes, which, as you can plainly see with your eyeballs, is exactly what I’ve been doing for the past thirty minutes.

Today, I have to be up by ten at the latest, then I have to shave and shower and at 11:40 I’ll mosey over to some recording studio that’s not too far from here. We’ll get everything set up, including a video, so Sami can re-do her vocal on one song. We’ll have her original track in Pro Tools so we can make sure what she does perfectly aligns with that because she has to match her original timing perfectly, because the video is the video and we’re stuck with that, timing-wise. We sent her all this stuff to work with so hopefully she’ll be on top of this. And we can also do it in sections until each section is perfect, then we’ll run the video with it and it should work. Then we’ll send that new vocal to John Adams for mixing – we sent him a new piano track already – we re-recorded the piano track to match her first vocal, because she was just not together with the piano, so that will all be fine now. We should be done by three at the latest.

Then I’ll stop by the mail place and see if anything is there, I’ll get something to eat, and then come home and eat whatever it is I’ve gotten, then I may do a Zoom after that, and that could last up to two hours. Then at some point, I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is survival mode, shipping out CDs, hoping for very necessary major miracles on a whole slew of fronts, getting the book ready for the design phase, making a slight adjustment on the cover of the new book for reasons I’ll explain eventually, and doing whatever else needs doing, including locking down the cast for the March 19 Kritzerland show. It’s pretty much cast, just one person to go and frankly that person may end up being Guy Haines. We shall see.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by ten at the latest, shave and shower, have a recording session, hopefully pick up some interesting mail, eat, then maybe hve a longish Zoom session, after which I can watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: Since Burt Bacharach’s passing fell on a day without a topic of discussion, what are your favorite Bacharach songs and film scores? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping for a Super Monday without a bowl.
