Martha Belmont Haines was the only child of Selma Wilma Wickes, who married William "Bill" Belmont while in the middle of a drunken stupor. Martha had a happy childhood, especially with her imaginary friend Little Mary Mucketts. After she met and married Herbert ("Pop") Haines, Martha devoted herself to her only son Guy Haines.

She still had her imaginary friend, Little Mary Mucketts, and this was very confusing to Guy. However, she was a doting mother, and sang her son show tunes every night before bed. After she tragically died when their Stutz Bearcat fell on her and Herbert, Guy was raised by Little Mary Mucketts.
