Guy's father, Herbert Strickland Haines, was one of nineteen children. He left home at sixteen to pursue a career as a Pole Vaulter. He also vaulted Czechs, but at twenty he decided to settle down and he became a well-respected maker of staples.

He married Martha Belmont and one month after the wedding Martha Belmont Haines gave birth to son Guy Haines. "Pop" and Martha both died when their automobile, a Stutz Bearcat, fell on them. Since they were not under the car at the time, their deaths were especially tragic.
