Mea culpa for the contest no no. It will never happen again. And for my penance I will take TWO Ernest and Meltz CDs please! (Of course, it will really be doubling my pleasure...)

"Who's That Woman" (the mirror number) from the original FOLLIES was quite astonishing and Gene Nelson's "The Right Girl" was a near perfect solo dance from a man somewhat past his prime. (Throwing chairs around had NOTHING to do with that original staging by Michael Bennett.)
I saw "Turkey Lurky Time" in San Francisco from the front row because I had broken or lost my glasses that day. It was a bit blurry, but definitely spectacular (but anything with Donna McKechnie seems above the norm).
The lost dances I would love to have seen were Vera-Ellen's two numbers in Connecticut Yankee (her last stage appearance). For me, she had everything that makes McKechnie great, an inability to fade into the chorus.

Gene Kelly doing "Singing In The Rain". A joyous celebration, seemingly effortless, and VERY hummable - the epitamy of what a musical number should be.

The Ed Sullivan video I have has La Verdon doing "I'm a Brass Band" with chorus and all, but I could swear it was on the Sullivan show that I saw her do "If They Could See Me Now" when CHARITY was on Broadway.
Every movement and her use of props and furniture conveyed the joy that Charity was feeling--on a small screen in black and white yet--in a way that Shirley simply didn't carry in the movie, perhaps because the cutting and lighting tricks, good as they were, got in the way and called too much attention to themselves.
I know somewhere in heaven Gwen is dancing on a cloud with a cane and top hat singing, "Sister, get her!" (I won't begin to tell you what Fosse is up to there.)

Oh, and Phil, you do know that when Kelly was tap dancing in the water, the sound of the splashes was dubbed by Gwen and Carol Haney. God's truth.

My favorite is also a Gene Kelly movie from 1955 called "It's Always Fair Weather". He does this incredible dance scene outside on rollerskates. WOW! It sets a precedent for his later silly appearance in the oh-so-campy "Xanadu".
Of course I also love the Monster's dance during the "I Want to Eat Your Face" scene of "Spaceship" (or whatever he is calling it these days) by our very own BK.

Oh, if we're talking MOVIE musicals, then my all-time favorite dance moment is Jimmy Cagney on the dock after the skyrocket goes off in "Yankee Doodle Dandy." Sheer joy.

William-
It wasn't just the splashes -- it was the entire number ("Singing in the Rain"). Kelly was too busy with the ballet to bother with the post-dubbing, so Haney's feet filled in all of the tapping/splashing sounds you hear, much as Hermes Pan or Fred Astaire dubbed in most of Ginger Rogers' taps. Oh, the magic of Hollywood.

In no particular order:
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers Barn Raising dance
Singin' in the Rain
Steppin out with a Star from the Great Muppet Caper (Robert - who dubbed THAT tapping in?)
ONE from A Chorus Line
Gene Kelly on Roller Skates in Always Fair Weather
Moses Supposes from Singin in the Rain
I Got Rhythm from Crazy for You
Your All The World To Me from Royal Wedding - Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling - WOW

As much as I've always despised the show, I must admit that the barn raising in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" is one of the greatest dance numbers I've ever seen. I suppose I really should develop more of an appreciation for the show...especially since I'm gonna be vocal director for the freakin' thing this summer!
As for something I've actually seen on stage, first thing that comes to mind is the opening audition montage from "A Chorus Line." Gets you ready for the glorious evening in store.

"Dancing in the Dark" from THE BANDWAGON.
"Singin' in the Rain"
"The Saga of Jenny" from STAR!
"Limehouse Blues" from STAR!
"A Dancin' Man" from BELLE OF NEW YORK
"The Worry Song" from ANCHORS AWAY
and "Dancing Dildoes" from some little musical....
and about those Columbia dvds; well FUNNY LADY says there are both wide and full-fram presentations, but thankfully, there is not a trace of the latter.

regarding the SITR tap dubbing- i have read and heard from interviews that Gene Kelly gave in documentaries that Kelly dubbed his own taps. moreover, i can understand if Carol Haney is involved in the dubbing as she was Kelly's assistant but where does Gwen Verdon come into the equation? i don't think she was even near MGM in 1952.

The chipmunk is the way to heaven. For this is the way for seven. I love this cold day, it is the only way, for fohs to bring itself into the...LIGHT!!!!!
Oh, the light of a new day, and the only thing I have to say...is that this thing is very odd, and I have a new pod...of peas and this is to please...and of course it is in the...NIGHT!!!!
The secrets of the floor, and the opening of a door. It is the only way, for fohs to have its say. And now I have the whole thing, and my own phone ring.
And...here...is...the...END!!!
