Firstly, I must warn you... Joe versus the Volcano does not get better. In fact, I remember falling asleep a few times trying to get through it...and in the end, I was rooting for the volcano. In fact, I was wondering why someone didn't throw the SCRIPT in there prior to production - Which is a shame, because I like John Patrick Shanley's stuff.
Ok.. as for the Ject in question. If it is indeed residing in Rye now, perhaps it is having a lot of fun at Rye Playland. Maybe it's eating cotton candy on the boardwalk, about to get onto the Dragon Coaster. (unseemly trivia connection: Rye Playland has been featured in quite a few movies such as Big and Fatal Attraction).
I'll have to think about 11 o'clock #'s and post those later... hmmm

Sammy Glick's final number in WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN? really sums up his character beautifully and offers a strong final curtain. Drake's score has been almost forgotten because the album was out of print for so long, but it's worth checking out on the new CD reissue. (End of unseemly plug)

Sorry, but Joe and the Volcano is one of my guilty pleasures. It has several of Meg Ryan's most entertaining performances and the smart ass humor works for me. It's definitely a love or hate kind of movie. I still think the opening is one of the funniest black humor sequences ever filmed, and where else are you going to find Abe Vigoda as a native chief? And the steamer trucks popping up at the end -- perfect.

incidently...
if a Ject is reincarnated, is it then rejected?
if a Ject is really popular, would you say it's injected?
if a Ject is inbetween two other jects..is it interjected?
if a Ject has been working out -- would you say wow.. nice abject!
and in the digital age, would Ject's website just be called Eject?

Some favorite 11:00 numbers -- "Is Anybody There?" from 1776; and the title song from "Oklahoma!" I am sure more will come to me anon.

Though I've yet to recieve an actual defintion of an 11 o'clock number, I think I have a good idea. However, please correct me if I'm wrong...
I'm Going Back from Bells
Come Back to Me from On a Clear Day
Rose's Turn
God-Why-Don't-You-Love-Me Blues
aaaand I can't even think of anymore...

Well, Sammy Glick forgot to mention the name of his 11:00 number, which I also love. It is "Some Days Everything Turns Out Wrong".
For those of you who don't know the score, run, don't walk, to your nearest amazon.com and order the CD. Favorites: "A Room Without Windows", "The Friendliest Thing (Two People Can Do)". Most quoted line in my college dorm: "Doctor, there are some things man was not meant to tamper with."
And not to forget that our very own Robert Armin is responsible for the newly revised version of the show.
But back to 11:00 numbers, even though it is only 15:46 (3:46 to you civilian types).
"What Did I Have that I Don't Have?"
"Something Wonderful"--or does it have to be sung by the star?
"Being Alive"
"No One Has Ever Loved Me"
"Cabaret"
"Sing Happy"
"The Brotherhood of Man" for its total absurdity. I love absurdity.
"Something Greater"
"With So Little to Be Sure Of"
"Make Your Garden Grow"
"I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face"
"Getting Tall"
"Move On"
"I Am Free"
Of course, some of these may not fit the precise rules for elevenoclocknumberhood, whatever they are.

Is it the 11th hour yet? How about "Betrayed" from THE PRODUCERS! "Rose's Turn" is without a doubt the best. Thanks for the reminder of "Getting Tall" William. A terrific list too.

Apparently, "ject" comes from the Latin "jacere," meaning "to throw." So "subject" must mean "to throw in an underhanded way."
Works great in slow-pitch softball.
Thought I'd toss that in.

Gee, I think "Betrayed" isn't anywhere as good as it should be - it does remind me that Brooks wanted to include "For me! For me!" in its lyric, and Arthur Laurents apparently replied "Over my dead body." I'd add "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" to the list, though.

I just wanted to share that I received my sparkling prize Wednesday night (24 April 2002). I was so excited to receive it. I am not going to describe the prize in detail so that it or a future prize like it might be something of a surprise for other winners. All I will say is that, indeed, it is sparkling and it is something I have wanted for a while. Thank you very much! I always enjoy the Unseemly Trivia Contest. Win, lose or show, it is always fun. Thank you for conducting it, and I am looking forward to tomorrow's contest!

In keeping with the "11 o'clock number" topic, I have a few more to add...
"Gimme, Gimme"-Thoroughly Modern Millie
"The Music That Makes Me Dance"-Funny Girl
"Sit Down, You're Rockin' The Boat"-Guys and Dolls
