There were a few questions posted after I began writing (or writing twice) - what is Guy Haines' middle name? Gaines. What is my middle name? Stewart.
Also, for the trivia question - I know Freedunit posted the answer rather than e-mailing it - but I would have gotten Sliver, The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse (one of my favorites), but then would have gotten confused because I mistakenly was looking for Norbert Jacques rather than the SCREENWRITER. I might have figured it out, though, who knows.

I would have a continual revival of Gypsy with every female, living or dead, who never got to play Mama Rose and should have. Nancy Walker, Bea Arthur, Stritch, Liza M...

Well, naturally, if I could revive any old musical it would be What Makes Sammy Run? with my brand-spanking new libretto and Ervin Drake's newly revised score. I don't know who I'd cast as Sammy but I wouldn't mind seeing Anne Heche as Kit Sargent, if she can sing it. Of course, I wouldn't mind seeing Anne Heche in just about anything.

The Obtuse, Roses, and Trivia
The obtuse reference is in the numbering of the questions, which pays homage of sorts to Doris Mann, of Postcards From the Edge (1990), portrayed by Shirley MacLaine, whose sixty-eighth anniversary of birth was yesterday, 24 April 2002.
As for a musical revival, I like Phil Crosby's idea of a perpetual, heavenly revival of Gypsy, but I would not exclude simply for having previously played Rose. Therefore, I would recast Ethel Merman and Angela Lansbury, heartily second Elaine Stritch, delete Bea Arthur, ban Tyne Daly, and add Lea DeLaria, Patti LuPone, Stefanie Powers, Michele Lee, Polly Bergen, Yvonne DeCarlo, Lorna Luft, Penny Fuller, Barbra Streisand, and Judy Garland, who might have been utterly brilliant.
Because the question was not an Unseemly Trivia Contest, and because there was no direction to E-mail, I posted because I thought one was supposed to post the answer, as was the case of the Stay-Away-Joe-(1968)-starring-Elvis-Presley-is-based-on the-same-novel-by-Dan-Cushman-as-Whoop-Up-featuring-Susan-Johnson question. I am sorry if I erred and spoiled the question, I read and reread the question in a sincere effort to respond by the appropriate means.

I thought William F. Orr asked for answers to be e-mailed to him. No matter, though, and I am very impressed that you got ALL the answers, freedunit.
Now, given that I had to write a good deal of these fershluagah notes twice today, where in tarnation have all the Hainsies/Kimlets gone. We need posts, Hainsies/Kimlets. We can't break records and then go the wrong way, now can we?
Posted by bk @ 04/25/2002 03:05 PM PST
Well, BK, if you need posts I'll break my usual reticence and give myself another plug. For those of you in the New York City area, I will be directing a reading of my Vernon Duke musical, Madly in Love, at the York Theatre on Sunday, May 12th at 7:30. Tickets are free, but you have to call them for reservations. Great songs, great cast, and a chance to meet me! What more could you ask for?

Did someone mention Posts?
Posted by Emily @ 04/25/2002 03:59 PM PST
You mean Robert Post's child? I saw somthing nasty in the woodshed!
I would selfishly revive Vampire Lesbians of Sodom because I never got to see it. I would cast Ethyl Merman and Jean Stapleton just for fun.

I'll get to my dream casting later, but a bit about my trivia question.
freedunit, I mentioned e-mail contact as an afterthought in the next post or the one after. Of course, you got everything right, and now you get your big pat on the back:
PAT!
There.
But to pursue the matter further, I have another question involving Esperanto and film. I'm sure Bruce and half the people here will know the answer off the top of their heads (?), but nobody I know in the Real World does.
The star of one of the most successful television series in history had one of his first starring roles in a Hollywood film that was entirely in Esperanto, produced by the creator of another classic television series which has recently been revived.
This film was thought to have been lost, but a restored version has recently been released on VHS and DVD.
Name the star, the film, and the producer.
Now I'm just betting this one is too easy, too.

William Shatner, "The Incubus," Leslie Stevens.
Sure, sure, I can totally win these unofficial trivia contests, but the ones that count? Where's Bert Convy when I need him?
Posted by JMK @ 04/25/2002 04:40 PM PST
The movie was Incubus (Not to be confused with 80's horror film with Kerri Keanne and John Cassevettes)
One of the stars was William Shatner Actually had two high profile film roles in The Brothers Karamazov, The Explossive Generation and Judgement at Nuremberg.
The director and writer was Leslie Stevens who did The Outer Limits.
Mever realized it was made in 1965. I thought it was made during Shatner's Big Bad Mama period.
Posted by Michael Shayne @ 04/25/2002 04:49 PM PST
Well, I just don't know any trivia that can stump you guys.
By the way, I have a copy of Incubus, and Shatner's pronunciation stiiiinks! The good part is, not once did he do his William Shatner Agony Pose.
Posted by William F. Orr @ 04/25/2002 05:18 PM PST
Well, here's some musical trivia that stumped our very own Mr. Kimmel: this performer starred in a 50s musical which was this performer's only 50s musical credit. This performer's spouse has the same name as ANOTHER performer who starred in a 50s musical, which was THAT performer's only 50s musical credit. Name the three people (only two names, since two of them have the same name) and two shows.

Revivals I'd like to see:
"Pajama Game" starring Reba McIntire and Douglas Sills...
"The Apple Tree" starring Sally Mayes, Jason Grae, and Jason Alexander...
"110 In The Shade" starring Audra MacDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell....
Posted by Anita @ 04/25/2002 06:09 PM PST
Hey! What's wrong with Shatner's agony pose? I am thrilled to hear of this movie. I will rent it this instant!
Okay, I have another trivia question for you all.
One of the co-stars of an unlikely buddy movie from 1991 involving a dead cat came out with a concept album, although he is not known as a singer. The album itself is a riddle involving clowns, rat catching, and boots with platform heels and he gives his home phone number on the album, requesting that listeners call him with the answer.
What is the movie? What is the actors full name? His co-star? What is the album entitled?
Posted by Mattso @ 04/25/2002 06:27 PM PST
Speaking of Robert Poste's child, does anyone know if there's ever been a musical version of Cold Comfort Farm?
Posted by Adrienne Hollister @ 04/25/2002 06:50 PM PST
Well, among others, I'd like to see a revival of "Dear World" with Angela Lansbury recreating her role.
I'd like to see a revival of "La Cage" with anybody decent. The possibilities are endless.
How about "Boy Meets Boy" with , oh, say Matt Damon and either David Campbell or Jude Law? I'd pay to see that.
"Applause" would be nice to see revived. There are so many possibilities for Margo.

I know that Carol Burnett is going to co-star as Queen Aggravain in ONCE UPON A MATTRESS on TV. I don't understand why she can't still play Winifred. I firmly believe she can still play this part and it would be perserved on tape or Dvd or whatever.
Posted by Arnold M.Brockman @ 04/25/2002 07:48 PM PST
1-Brian Stokes Mitchell in a revival of KEAN.
2.Elaine Stritch in GYPSY
3.Meryl Streep in LADY IN THE DARK
4.Elaine Stritch and Susan Egan in WONDERFUL TOWN.
In fact Elaine Stritch reading THE NEW YORK CITY TELEPHONE DIRECTORY would be a sheer pleasure.
Posted by Arnold M. Brockman @ 04/25/2002 08:00 PM PST
Arnold M. Brockman, I agree! Carol Burnett should play Fred.
I offered my opinion in 04/17/2002: THE TONGUE AND THE XM: I am so upset to read a report that Carol Burnett will return to CBS for a new production of Once Upon a Mattress in which she is said to play the role of Aggravain. Burnett should play the role of Winnifred the Woebegone exactly as written, without a single change or acknowledgment of her age. Burnett is up to it, and I believe she would make it work brilliantly. Jane White should return as Aggravain, because no one sings 'Sensitivity" better than White does. Matthew Broderick should be Dauntless. Bernadette Peters should return as Lady Larken, with Marc Kudisch as Harry. Bill Irwin should be King Sextimus, and either Nathan Lane or Michael McGrath should be the Minstrel. However, since there is virtually no chance of CBS casting Mattress as described, Andrea McArdle should play Fred.
Really, I do not want McArdle to play Fred. I want to see Burnett do it. I think with Burnett in the role it would be hysterically funny for the actress playing Fred to be obviously too old for the part. It would be just one more, unspoken reason for Aggravain to be upset with Dauntless's choice of princess.

Mattso,
I can answer your question.
The movie is Rubin and Ed. The star is Crispin Glover. His co-star is Howard Hesseman. The album's title is (get ready for this):
The Big Problem [symbol for "does not equal"] the Solution: the Solution = Let It Be." I happened to be working in a record store (yes, back when they were still called that) when this little gem came out, around late '89 or early '90.
Believe it or not, Crispin Glover has since come out with a second album. He comes by his ability to act really creepy honestly; his dad is Bruce Glover, "Mr. Wint" of Diamonds are Forever fame.

Mattso,
I'm reading the posts backwards, as you can tell. Just came across your reference to "Lesbian Vampires of Sodom," and had to relate an anecdote.
At the same time as I worked in the previously mentioned record store, I lived in Our Nation's Heartland. There I met a very interesting person who looked remarkably like Penn Jillette, only his hair was bigger and more, to use a term of the day, "fried."
He saw a touring version of Vampires and ever after used a line from it, his favorite (he even had a T-shirt made up with the phrase emblazoned boldly across it):
This isn't my hair, these are my NERVE ENDINGS!!!

Our casting calls seem to include the quick and the dead, so:
Robert, can I borrow Brian Stokes for Kismet? Opposite Eartha Kitt (whom I already saw in Timbuktu, but she didn't do "Not Since Nineveh"), and with Nathan Lane as the Wazir.
Chris Isaaks and Marlene Dietrich in Destry.
Rosalind Russell in Mame.
Bette Midler in Anything Goes.
Could we get a young Bernadette Peters for Cabaret, with Red Skelton as the MC?
I've always wanted to hear Maria Callas sing Fosca with perhaps Beverly Sills as Clara--but who for Giorgio? William Tabbert?
Let's do La Cage aux folles with Robert Preston and Milton Berle. Assuming Miss John Wayne isn't available to play Zazie.
And if we aren't limited to musicals, I think Bette Davis and Joseph Cotton would be perfect for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Of course, we all have our dream casts for Follies.
Sally: Doris Day
Phyllis: It has to be Diana Rigg. And if she can't do "Lucy/Jessy", that's just too bad. What other spot in a show has three songs to choose from?
Ben: Richard Kiley in the first part, but he is magically transformed into Fred Astaire for "Live, Laugh, Love".
Buddy: Gene Kelly, who turns into Jimmy Durante in the Follies sequence.
Solange: Leslie Caron. Didn't she play Solange already somewhere?
Carlotta: I was so happy when Lauren Bacall was announced for the Papermill production and so sad when she was replaced by Ann Miller. Although I must say that Ann came off much better on the record than live.
Hattie: Angela Landsbury. Or she could play Carlotta, and I wouldn't object.
The Whitmans: Steve Lawrence and Edie Gorme.
Vincent and Vanessa: Arthur and Kathryn Murray.
But I'd fire all of the above in a trice if I could only see the original cast.

Please accept my apology for missing the message to E-mail responses to the not-Unseemly-Trivia-Contest question posted yesterday. I missed it, I erred, and I am sorry. For whatever it might be worth, I read and reread the post that contained the question itself to make determine whether or not there was such a direction. Later, before posting, I searched for the word mail to try to ensure I was following the rules for the question, because I was hesitant to post a response, especially since there seemed not to be others, but I missed it. I do not know if I was unaware that the cursor was too far down in the document when I searched, or if I searched from the wrong page. [I know the Preview page does not display prior comments, and I sure never meant to search on that interim page...] Again, I am sorry.
As for non-Unseemly Trivia Contest questions, yesterday I noticed they seem to appear and be answered faster than I can browse, so it may not be a problem in the future! ;-) I hope there are more!
Posted by freedunit @ 04/26/2002 07:19 AM PST
Bruce, thank you for the answers, and especially the education in "grand rights." It is much appreciated.
I am still catching up on columns and posts--sixty-two (62) of them yesterday!--add to that questions, non-Unseemly-Trivia-Contest trivia contests, research, apologies, and worries about a new Once Upon a Mattress on CBS, and it is a lot for one reader. Soon I may need a browsing assistant...
What about Megan Mullally for Mame or Cora in Anyone Can Whistle?
I wonder whether there are Kimsies and Hainlets...
Posted by freedunit @ 04/26/2002 07:48 AM PST
Yaaaaay, Lulu! Great job on my trivia. I was beginning to worry that no one would try. Wow, can't wait to hear the second Crispin Hellion Glover album. Great story about "Vampire Lesbians of Sodom". I wish I could find me one of those t-shirts.
William F. Orr, I would also love to see Earth Kitt in almost anything. Kismet would be great. I saw her perform once at the Carlysle Hotel and she was fabulous! I could watch her in almost anything at any age.

JMK-
I don't know whether you saw my post.Where did you get the Claus Ogerman Collection?
Posted by Arnold M. Brockman @ 04/26/2002 08:28 AM PST
My umbrella once attacked Eartha Kitt in the rain.
If she wont do Kismet, we could always revive that act.

Please, freedunit, no need to beat your chest and cover your head with ashes. Since my trivia questions were not Unseemly in the Grand Manor, the rules were more lax.
And yes, Mattso, how about Eartha as Joanne in Company? Phyllis in Follies? Mama Rose with Whoopie as Louise? Well, that may be a stretch, but I always think "Mama, I'm a pretty girl," is much more effective if you don't cast a real looker as Louise.
And while we are doing color-blind casting, can I please have Cleo Laine play Mrs. Lovett for just one performance? Any suggestions for her Sweeney?
