I believe the woman who wrote to you is thinking of "The Butler's Song" from "So Long, 174th Street." It's a man, not a woman, who's busy with every female star in 1930s Hollywood in the fantasy spun by aspiring actor Robert Morse. (The butler was played by George S. Irving.) The song is by Stan Daniels, a one-time writer for the Mary Tyler Moore Show, and it includes every synonym or euphemism for heterosexual intercourse one could easily think of.

Well, now Mr. Bea Kay, how can I not take up the gauntlet when you ask for any kind of list of favorites:
TWELVE FAVORITE MATHEMATICAL THEOREMS
1. Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem--which shows us absolutely that we can never know everything about anything.
2. Napoleon's Theorem: "On each side of a given (arbitrary) triangle describe an equilateral triangle exterior to the given one, and join the centers of the three thus obtained equilateral triangles. The resulting triangle is also equilateral."
I mean, just the fact that it was Napoleon Bonaparte who discovered it is pretty amazing.
3. Euclid's Fifth Proposition Simply because its traditional nickname is pons asinorum, i.e. the Asses' Bridge.
4. The Chinese Remainder Theorem, because it says something so intricate about numbers that all mathematicians pretend they know it, but they really don't.
5. Fermat's Last Theorem, because Pierre Fermat wrote in the margin of a book "I proved this, but there's not room to write it in the margin", thereby sending thousands of mathematician off on a snipe hunt for hundreds of years while he's chuckling in his coffin, 'cause he never really proved it, and neither could they.
6. The Four-Color Theorem, because it is so simple to state: "Any map can be colored with four colors so that no two bordering countries are the same color", and it took a high-speed computer to prove it.
7. The Pythagorean Theorem, because it's the only one my students know.
8. Fourier's Theorem, because it is essential to the digitalization of music.
9. The Side Approximation Theorem, because it is so damn esoteric that I can't begin to explain it, but my Texas-born professor (who was responsible for it) said to our class in the thickest drawl: "Well, ah think if ya wanta live in three-dimensional space ya oughta know somethin' about it!"
10. "Alexander the Great Did Not Exist, and He Had Six Limbs", because it is proved by Puns and Intimidation in the book Stress Analysis of a Strapless Evening Gown.
11. "All Finite Desarguesian Inversive Planes Are Regular", because I proved it for my Ph.D. thesis, although I only have vague memories of it now.
12. The Pudding Theorem, because the proof is in the eating.
Now any one of those would make a terrific musical!
Your turn.

To Bill Orr: Fermat's Theorem has, unbelievably, already been made into a musical--Fermat's Last Tango. Both the CD and DVD of the stage performance are available. Some interesting music in the score, not one of my all-time faves.

JMK: Aaaaamazing.
Sandra: What is floop?
Der Kimmel: Oh, no, keep the trivia contests. Maybe a little less intricate. Although your "beast" clue had me arfing with Sandy, once you gave the answer it was totally transparent. The perfect type of puzzle.

I really like the two movies you mentioned. And how about the disturbing " The Gambler". The gambling stuff is right on, and the ending is shocking. I kind of miss those late sixties early seventies endings where the movie takes a quick twist and suddenly it is over (usually in freeze frame ala The French Connection). Another movie to see along the same lines is Harvey Keitel's "Bad Lieutenant" (sp?), which is an 80s film, I believe, and very dark and certainly not for the kiddies, but muy disturbing.

I really don’t like it when the dog bites, the bee stings or I’m feeling sad, so these are a few— well, twelve, of my favorite things. [Daffodils, green meadows, and skies full of stars are nice, but not really among my top-twelve favorite.]
1. Raindrops on roses
—not on any other flower or anything else
2. Whiskers on kittens
—no moustaches, only whiskers, and not on other animals
3. Bright copper kettles
—no dull metals and, please, a proper kettle, not a pot or a pan
4. Warm, woolen mittens
—not cotton, not synthetic, and definitely not gloves
5. Brown-paper packages tied up with strings
—no with wire ever!
6. Cream-colored ponies
—only cream-colored, others hurt my eyes
7. Crisp apple strudel
—pastry has to be streusel with apple—pears and other fruits will not do—and I hate soggy pastry
8. Door bells
—just door bells—no, also
Sleigh bells
—O.K., doorbells and sleigh bells, but no other bells, no dumb bells, etc.
9. Schnitzel with noodles
—not wiener schnitzel, just plain schnitzel, but it must have noodles—without noodles it’s not real schnitzel
10. Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
—only wild ones and never carrying any other satellite
11. Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
—sorry, boys and boys-who-will-be-girls, only girls and just white dresses, no cream, no ecru, no “natural” or “bone,” and they must be the ones with blue—not navy, not lavender—satin—not silk, not linen—sashes
12. Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
—snowflakes are great, but not on the ground and not on other body parts—well, not just snowflakes, but
Silver white winters that melt into springs
—I hate dull gray winters that melt into summer or autumn, so just the silver white ones, and no winters that don’t melt, because they are unseemly

Keep the Triva Contest. Pleeeeeease. Just because we don't submit answers doesn't mean we don't spend hours trying to find answers to submit.
Posted by Mark L. @ 05/14/2002 04:49 PM PST
The trivia contest must stay!!! It was always one of my favorite parts of the Real A's column, and I've greatly enjoyed it here as well. If I have any complaint about recent trivia questions, it has been the 6-part, 10-part, or other-ridiculously-high-numbers-of-parts answers to them. But that is but a tiny, miniscule, wee, insignificant little issue that may not bug anyone else around here.

freedunit - I most certainly was not suggesting that the Unseemly Trivia Contest should depart! If you'll notice, the first line of my post was, in fact, "The trivia contest must stay!!!" I didn't get to listen to the show until yesterday (May 14th) so I'm a bit late in posting my list. I have 12 and a cheat. I figure the cheat is permissible since Mr. Kimmel himself uses Pick Yourself Up from Swingtime as the theme to the Broadway Radio Show so I will use a Kern/Fields song from that movie as well
My list in no particular order
Someone in a Tree (PO)
A Weekend in the Country (ALNM)
Simple Little Things (110)
What Would I Do (Falsettoland)
Far From the Home I Love (FOTR)
Meadowlark (BW)
Coffee in a Cardboard Cup (70G70)
What Do I Tell People This Time (Oh, Brother)
A Little Priest (ST)
You're Nothing Without Me (COA)
Make Our Garden Grow (Candide)
I Loved You Once in Silence (Camelot)
and my cheat is
The Way You Look Tonight (the Rogers/Astaire film Swing Time) but it's by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields who wrote many things for the theatre
