"NO DAWDLING ALLOWED"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, I have a very early start today, so I’m afraid I must not dawdle. I must get to the point. I must not stray from the point – and the point would be that I must not dawdle. Of course, I have done nothing but dawdle, but I shan’t dawdle any longer. I shan’t dawdle because I do not like the look of the word “dawdle”.

I forgot to write about seeing Dave Frishberg on Thursday night. It was a duo act – Dave and a fellow named Bob Dorough. Bob was fine, but Dave was really excellent – funny, laid back and charming. I’d never seen him perform live before and I don’t really know his material all that well. I met him after the show but couldn’t get to dear reader Pam’s questions. However, I can tell you that Mr. Frishberg will be appearing in the New York version of the Tourette Syndrome benefit.

I had an exhausting day yesterday – just endless. I did meet some interesting folks, which was fun. And today shall be just as exhausting. I will need all of you dear readers to keep things going here as I won’t be able to return to haineshisway.com until the early evening hours. So, remember, don’t dawdle, whatever you do.

Well, shall we all click on the Unseemly Button below, lest we be accused of dawdling?

Today is, of course, our Unseemly Trivia Contest day, and I’ve come up with a quickie for your mental delectation:

A flop musical

The composer’s first Broadway musical

The authors’ first Broadway musical

The director’s first Broadway musical

The male lead’s first and last Broadway musical

The authors and director would go on to work with a musical theater legend multiple times. The composer would go on to have a major career in the musical theater.

Name the musical.

Name the composer.

Name the authors

Name the director

Name the male lead.

Remember, DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS TO THE SITE. You may e-mail them to me at bruce@haineshisway.com, or simply use the Ask BK button on our fancy-shmancy home page. And don’t forget, Donald will have a brand spanking new radio show up and running on Sunday.

Well, I must take the day, I must do the things I do and I must do the things I do for many many many (that is three manys) hours. Today’s topic of discussion (and please talk about whatever else you feel like): Your suggestions for casting Nudie Musical for the stage. I already have several fairly concrete ideas, but I really would like to hear your ideas. Post away, my pretties.

- Bruce Kimmel

Jay wrote: "Have you (or anyone else here) seen SORDID LIVES? It is a film written and directed by Del Shores, the author of SISSIES. It is quite a funny picture and has developed rather more than a bit of cult status."

Yes, actually I did see SORDIS LIVES. I did not think it was as funny as DADDY'S DYING, WHO'S GOT THE WILL, but it had it's moments. I think it acheived cult status among gays and senior citizens in Palm Springs. (Go figure....)

Recently I just picked up the VS soundtrack which includes songs, score, and dialogue excerpts. Very enjoyable, often ironically humorous, esp. songs like "Get Off the Cross (We Need the Wood") and "Please Don't Be Gay"! :)

SISSIES (as I mentioned) uses country-western tunes for a couple of drag acts. (I missed the cheerleader number replaced in the last revival).

And yes, the show is very well-done, entertaining and meaningful (esp. to anyone with conflicted religious inclinations).

To correct a previous post, the last play I saw was a staged reading of the rather rare HIGH BUTTON SHOES, by the excellent Rubicon Theater Co. in Ventura. It was a great introduction to a light, if very entertaining and rarely perfomred musical.

I haven't seen First Nudie Musical, so I can't cast it. Just be sure it has a good touring cast, because that's the one I'd see!

Posted by Laura @ 09/14/2002 11:10 AM PST

Well, I couldn't post yesterday (to a quetion that I asked!) because I was at...what is now the most recent piece of theatre that I have seen.
I was at the Midwest Premiere of Tony Kushner's Homebody/Kabul. It just so happens that a major part of the plot has to do with a woman searching for bright and colorful hats for a party.
It was truly an incredible experience. It was 3 1/2 hours long, and I never was bored. (Though, of course, length has very little to do with interest. I've been to 90 minute shows that felt like they were 5 hours long.) At the end, I felt like I had been brutally pummeled, but at the same time uplifted. If it is produced in your area, (And I know that Steppenwolf will do it Summer 2003 and the Mark Taper will do it Fall 2003) go see it! It is a truly incredible experience.

Posted by François @ 09/14/2002" "UN SOIR A BROADWAY with un grand orchestre symphonique directed by Jean Claude CASADESUS........."

Is Jean Claude any relation to Robert?????

BTW I really liked your French lyrics to A CERTAIN SMILE. Merci!

Ross

BTW you may have some competition in casting FNM. I see in the LA Times PUPPETRY OF THE PENIS is auditioning aspiring puppeteers...... :)

Ross: Jean Claude

I really wish I'd written those
French lyrics myself.....
Thanks for thanking me !...

Ron: "all you all" is the French
translation of "all y'all" : )
-- sorry ! I could not remember
Jason's lesson on the
subject...
BTW, did you get my
yesterday's email ????

Posted by François @ 09/14/2002 04:39 PM PST

Tom from Oz I am shocked, do you hear me? Shocked. I think you will need to watch a certain film so you can contribute to today's question. Now, where in tarnation is everyone. We must have action, excitement, thrills, chills, laughter, gaiety, and more posts count them more posts. I, personally, am exhausted.

Posted by bk @ 09/14/2002 05:54 PM PST

You said it BK ; everyone is ...
in tarnation !!!!

Posted by François @ 09/14/2002 06:13 PM PST

We must have excitement, we need to be Rainbow High in magical colors! Sorry, my mind is in Evita-land, today was the orchestra sing through and tomorrow is tech-sunday. I was very snippy with the conductor (Oh, I'm the asst conductor!) because he needs to relax, I think he needs to watch FNM, as I do AGAIN so I can cast it next time the topic comes up. I'm off to relax and try to center myself and think DISNEYLAND whenever I'm ticked at the conductor. 3 more weeks! Thanks for listening!

Posted by Matthew @ 09/14/2002 06:17 PM PST

BK:

Can you clarify something about the trivia question.

When you say authors

Do you mean the librettist and the lyricists?

Or

Just the librettist and meaning that there are two or more writers of the book since you pluralized authors?

Posted by MDS @ 09/14/2002 06:26 PM PST

I saw Sordid Lives. It played on and off for over a year in Fort Lauderdale. It ahd a big following. Can't wait for that film to come onto DVD. I really enjoyed the film. Great cast. I especially enjoyed Leslie Jordan's peformance. Delta Burke was a hoot. Highly recommend it to anyone!

Posted by Michael Shayne @ 09/14/2002 06:29 PM PST

Authors in the plural - libbrettists and lyricists

Posted by bk @ 09/14/2002 07:21 PM PST

Returning from tarnation, I'd like to say that like the film of TFNM, the stage version should be cast with relative unknowns - fresh faces, fresh buns, fresh abs, fresh...well, you know the rest.
BTW - Mr. Valley, the editor of a certain magazine called Scarlet Streets is insisting that I mention that the stage version MUST HAVE MORE penii (that is the plural of penis, ne c'est-pas?) To quote him, he "won't sit still for another d***less NUDIE MUSICAL!"

Posted by td @ 09/14/2002 08:28 PM PST

td,

you got your isn't wrong !

N'est-ce pas ? There !

Quite a FRESH idea for the
stage version of FNM !

Should we call it
"Oh, Calcutta !" ?
Right now it's "Penisless
Bums"
or should it be "Penisless
BuNs" ?.............

Posted by François @ 09/14/2002 09:24 PM PST

it's pathetic that i don't even have my french down tonight. that's what i get for spending so much time in tarnation!
mercis, francois!
Maybe we could pull (or yank) the future stars of TFNM from the ranks of the adult entertainment industry...anyone remember Jeff Stryker? John Leslie? Annette Haven?

Posted by td @ 09/14/2002 09:51 PM PST

Haven....I'm IN Haven !!??

Well, no !

Posted by François @ 09/14/2002 09:59 PM PST

The only Annette I remember
is Funicello....and.... she sure
wasn't in that kind of business.
