10/07/2002:
"WHAT A SWELL PARTY IT WAS"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, what a thoroughly entrancing time the Est Coast Hainsies/Kimlets had. Has anyone noticed that I accidentally typed Est instead of East? I hope we don’t have any Est Hainsies/Kimlets because Est is not au courant and we must always be au courant, now mustn’t we. Where was I? Oh, yes, our thoroughly entrancing time. There were a couple of no-shows, but we had nine people all told and we had a marvelous party. William F. Orr and partner arrived and brought pointy party hats and we all wore them, oh, yes, we all wore them and looked quite festive. William E. Lurie and partner were there, as were Ben and partner. I was surrounded by two lovely ladies, Cissy Wechter and our very own Susan Gordon. Angus’ restaurant (Angus was the host at Joe Allen for seven years) is terrific – nice atmosphere, good food. There was lovely conversation, and we took a festive photo which will be posted on this here site if the errant and truant Mr. Mark Bakalor ever gets off his West Coast butt cheeks and does some work on this here site. Many secrets were divulged, but those who attended are sworn to secrecy, although all will be revealed here in short order. In any case, it was a splendid evening, and hopefully the first of many Hainsies/Kimlets get together. I was, unfortunately, not at my wittiest and gayest because my fershluganah back was killing me. What I ever did to my back to warrant a homicide being perpetrated, I’ll never know.

If you were errant and truant and missed this weekend’s notes, you simply will not be with it if you don’t use the Unseemly Archive Button and peruse them. You will not be happening, you will not be in with the in crowd, you will not be the bomb, you will not be rad, you will, in short or long, not be the ginchiest. I’m not going to tell you what happened here on Saturday, notes-wise, you simply must read them for yourself – but I will tell you it was wild and wooly and also wooly and wild. And Sunday, all the answers to last Wednesday’s Ask BK Day were posted. So, do take a look. And also, be sure to tune in to Donald’s brand spanking new radio show.

Today is a very busy day – first taking a train somewhere and meeting with the Tourette people about the benefit. Then back to the city to meet with the people at the Danny Kaye Theater. Then on to audition some kids, then dinner with our potential stage manager for the benefit. Then back to the retro hotel to hopefully relax and get a good night’s sleep.

Apparently this hotel is located next to a trash dump center, because all I hear in the endless drone of trash being dumped – they were doing it last night at midnight and they are doing it now. I would go raise my window and yell on them but they have those things over their ears to block out the sound. They ought to provide those for people who are staying in the hotel.

Well, why don’t we click on the Unseemly Button below and see what’s going on in the next section.

Have I mentioned what a swellegant time we all had at our little get-together with our Est Coast Hainsies/Kimlets? Perhaps some of them will post more details about it in today’s posts.

Have you ever known people who, no matter how many times you tell them something, no matter how many times you even write it down for them, simply refuse to remember that you told them something? They act like you never said it, never wrote it – they look at you like you’re a lunatic and you have to get all snippy and nasty about it and then they still act like they don’t believe you ever said it. Then they find the paper where you wrote it and they sheepishly call and say, “Oh, yeah, it’s here, you did say it.” And that’s it. No, I’m sorry I acted like you didn’t say it when you said you did say it. This happens to me frequently and with a variety and also a Hollywood reporter of various and sundried people. A good bitch-slapping is in order, don’t you think?

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must get on a train and go somewhere, I must say things to people so they can deny I said them, I must go hither and thither and thither and hither, I must also go yon, I must listen to musical theater children strut their stuff, I must, in short, get crackin’. Today’s topic of discussion: At last night’s party, dear reader Ben pointed out that one of the wildest times we’ve had here was when we did our own totally inappropriate casting for a revival of West Side Story. So, let us take another stab at that same topic. Let us say that we are doing a brand spanking new revival of The Sound of Music – which we will cast with the most wrong people currently working in theater and movies and television. Now, put on your thinking hats and go to it. Also, post about anything your little collective hearts desire. Post away, my pretties.

Oh, and of course Mr. Robert Armin and lovely wife stopped by for a short visit, too.

Posted by bk @ 10/07/2002 05:44 AM PST

Well, if the compliment is good enough for Ira Gershwin, it's certainly good enough for MY "lovely wife," Kristine Nevins. I'm glad we had a chance to drop by last night and meet some of the Est Coast brigade. A more charming group I have never encountered.

I'm rushing off to my (non-internet-connected) job but I would certainly like to propose a couple inappropriate casting choices for The Sound of Music. We absolutely must have Ms Patti LuPone as our Maria and the adorable Lea DeLaria as the Mother Abbess. And since they will soon be performing together again, why not bring Mandy Patinkin in as the Captain?

Posted by Robert Armin @ 10/07/2002 05:59 AM PST

Of course a lovely time was had by all and those of us who attended (including one who was there over the phone) all posted comments at the end of Sunday's notes, so you should click the unlikely archives button if you want to read them.

SOUND OF MUSIC
Maria...Harvey Fierstein
The Captain...Nathan Lane (Brad Oscar two or three times a week)
Liesel...Kelly Osborne
The other girls...The Olson Twins, Kristen Alderman ("One Life to Live"), Brittany Spears
The boys... Gary Coleman, Joel Haley Osmond (or however he spells it)
Rolf...Tommy Tune
Mother Superior...Bette Midler
Elsa and Max...Stiller and Meara

Posted by William E. Lurie @ 10/07/2002 06:01 AM PST

Whew! I'm so happy this is up early today, since there is no one, and I repeat, not a single one female person today working in film who SHOULD be cast as the Haineshisway Maria in THE SOUND OF MUSIC:
Courtney Love is Maria!
And should I get back early enough this evening from tech rehearsal (HA!) I will post the remainder of my cast...
I was with you guys last night, in spirit anyway (oh, look! a Rocky Horror Picture Show reference).

Posted by td @ 10/07/2002 06:03 AM PST

Actually, if a new film were made, I think Susan Egan would make a lovely Maria (although she toils in TV right now and not film). She has all the requisite skills and charm -- but, then, that would disqualify her from casting on today's column!

Posted by Robert Armin @ 10/07/2002 06:22 AM PST

Well, as far as casting is concerned, we absolutely must have Rita Moreno doing her Googie Gomez act as "one of those goddamn Trapp family kids". cf. The Ritz.

Posted by William F. Orr @ 10/07/2002 06:50 AM PST

It was really great to meet everyone last night at the first Est Coast Hainsies and Kimlets party. Having gotten to know each of you, first, through your posts at HHW made last evening's event more like a gathering of longtime friends, with the bonus of now having a face and a voice to go with the words. It was a pleasure getting to know all of you! A special thanks to William Orr for providing the pointy party hats, for what would a party at HHW be without pointy party hats!

To everyone who wasn't there last night, you were duly missed.

Posted by Susan Gordon @ 10/07/2002 07:04 AM PST

Just catching up on yesterday's posts, I see Tom of Oz asked, "What ever happened to Patty McCormack?"

Well, a quick IMDB search reveals that she is now (mostly) Patricia McCormack. She did a couple of Murder, She Wrotes (as who hasn't?), appeared on The Soparanos in Episode 2.8 "Full Leather Jacket" playing Liz La Cerva; played Dulcina in a version of Don Quixote directed by Orson Welles in 1992; and is in two films released this year called The Kiss (with Terence Stamp) and Inhabited (with Malcolm McDowell).

Now aren't you glad you asked?

Posted by William F. Orr @ 10/07/2002 07:28 AM PST

Sound of Music casting... Well, ALL the children would either have to be played by 'N Sync, The Backstreet Boys, SWV, The Osmonds-The New Generation, etc... Regardless of whether or not there are enough "kids" in each group to make the right number of kids required for the show. Some producer would find a way to make it work. *Well, there was a plan for Charlie Brown to go out with the New Osmonds, despite the fact that it looked like one of the boys would be have to swing out each night - unless they made Lucy a boy.

Continuing in this vein, either Jennifer Lopez (or J-Lo for those who are jiggy with it) or Paula Abdul as Maria. Sebastian Bach or David Hasselhoff as the Captain von Trapp. And I would make Harvey Fierstein the Mother Abbess. Oh, and Simon what's-his-name from American Idol as the Baroness! Now that I'd love to see!!!

Posted by Jose C. Simbulan @ 10/07/2002 08:52 AM PST

Maria -- Whoopi Goldberg
Captain Von Trapp -- Harvey Fierstein
Liesl -- Rosie O'Donnell
Rolf -- Tom Cruise

and

Miss Barbra Streisand as the Reverend Mother!

Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 10/07/2002 08:57 AM PST

Hard to top Dear Reader Ron's casting for Sound of Music, but I shall try.

Maria: Debi Mazar

Captain Von Trapp: James Garner

The Mother Abbess: "Miss Cleo"

The Baroness: Reese Witherspoon

Max: Elijah Wood

The Little Von Trapps:

I agree with Jose that for maximum awfulness, the Von Trapp children should be played by some combination of various teenybopper pop stars: Britney, Christina, LeeAnn, 'N Sync, etc.

Besides the aforementioned credits, Patty McCormack was also a regular on the disastrous Three's Company spinoff, The Ropers. Her character was married to Jeffrey Tambor's.

Posted by Lulu @ 10/07/2002 09:55 AM PST

And oh, my dear Bruce, I wish you had said something about your back last night. I remarked to my Joe after we got home that you looked a bit out of sorts--which is strange, because I've never seen you in sorts, have I? A nice pair of Bermuda sorts, perhaps?

In any case (IAC in Internet Lingo), you should have spoken up, because Joe, being a sufferer from a chronic neuromuscular disease, had a veritable pharmicological storeroom in his backpack. And there's nothing like a good prescription muscle relaxer for back pain.

Be that as it may (BTAIM in Internet Lingo), I hope the pain is vanquished and vanished and you are happily auditioning little Jewish boys and whatever else is on for today.

I should add to all and sundried, that this was my Joe's and my first trip into Manhattan since you-know-what, and that the closeup of the lit-up skyline from the Expressway in Queens still thrills the heart, perhaps even more now. All those lights, all those people, doing all those things. Nothing dies. Sally Plummer was right after all.

Or as Aurelia would say in Dear World, "Everything that was is." Awfully philosophical for Jerry Hermann, isn't it?

Posted by William F. Orr @ 10/07/2002 10:15 AM PST

William - is it me, or does the phrase "auditioning little jewish boys" just sound.. I dunno.. wrong LOL

Posted by Craig @ 10/07/2002 10:20 AM PST

oops!

Well, Craig, you know what they say about "the mind of the beholder", or in this case, the bereader.

Posted by William F. Orr @ 10/07/2002 11:10 AM PST

How about the cast of Married...With Children in the Sound of Mucus

Katy Sagal: Maria
Ed O'Neil: Captain Von Trapp
David Faustino: Rolf
Christina Applegate: Liesl
Amanda Bearse: The Baroness
Ted McGinley: Max
Mother Abbess: Lea deLaria
I second Jose's idea of casting the children (see above). It's a perfect ploy to bring in the young crowd and get them to love and cherish musicals as we do here ;-)

Posted by Ben @ 10/07/2002 11:21 AM PST

Ben, I can actually see your version being an off-off-off Broadway show. It would no doubt be a hot ticket and kick off a trend; soon we would be seeing "The Cast of Charles in Charge Perform Titus Andronicus" and "The Cast of Mr. Belvedere Perform Waiting for Godot."

Posted by Lulu @ 10/07/2002 11:33 AM PST

I notice that I failed to include cast suggestions for the Baroness and Max:

Baroness: Ellen DeGeneres

Max: Sean P. Hayes

Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 10/07/2002 11:35 AM PST

I know BK shares my love of the Astaire/Rogers "Swing Time". I'm betting many of you enjoy it very much, as well.

It aired on a local channel last night and I surfed over to it during commercial breaks of another program to catch favorite moments, including the "Bojangles of Harlem" number.

I keep meaning to bring this up every time I see the film, but have never managed to until now:

Anyone notice during the section when Astaire, in the foreground, is dancing with his three silhouettes in the background that Astaire's head seems to be transparent? I know the process is probably to blame (whatever it was to get that shot), but something must be doable to prevent that transparency...every time his had passes one of the silhouettes, you see the silhouette through his head.

Next time you see the film, watch for this!

Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 10/07/2002 11:44 AM PST

No, no, no, people! There is one and only one currently active performer who can handle the rôe of the Abess. And that is Dame Edna. "Climb every mountain, possums!"

And for Maria... well, when I was in high school, a friend journeyed to New York to see the Original Cast. Her assessment was, "I love Mary Martin, but she should not try to play a young girl in love." With that in mind, I am hoping Carol Channing is available to play the lead. Opposite Baron Joel Grey.

Posted by William F. Orr @ 10/07/2002 11:50 AM PST

Whoa! I'm on a roll here!

As long as Joel is to be the Captain, how about his real life daughter Jennifer as Liesl? And then who else for Rolf but Patrick Swayze, dirty dancing to "You Are Seventeen"? Minor changes in the orchestration, mind you.

Posted by William F. Orr @ 10/07/2002 12:01 PM PST

I'm glad the East Coast party went well. What a sight you must have all been in your pointy party hats! Sorry we had to miss it!

BK--sounds to me like you are talking to teenagers there, the way folks are not hearing what you have said! Either teens or church board members.

Posted by Laura @ 10/07/2002 12:53 PM PST

Laura,

A friend once told me, "I became a high school teacher, because I wanted to stand up in the middle of a room without the fear that someone might be listening."

Posted by William F. Orr @ 10/07/2002 01:09 PM PST

uh.. that got a bit shortened. Try this:

"I became a high school teacher, because I wanted to stand up in the middle of a room and talk to myself without the fear that someone might be listening."

Posted by William F. Orr @ 10/07/2002 01:11 PM PST

BK:

Nothing wrong about "Est" being "Au courant" because they are all French words and "est" just happens to mean "east"

Posted by Michael Shayne @ 10/07/2002 02:39 PM PST

Sound of Music

Two names that have already been mentioned but I would go a different way...

I would like to see Harvey Fierstein in it as well, but as Mother Superior. Come on now can you not imagine his version of Climb of Every Mountain ?

Captain Von Trapp...Lea DeLaria. If she could play Marrying Sam in Li'l Abner should can do the Captain.

Maria has to be played by someone who has a virginal image and therefore someone unfortunatly there is no out there anymore that can fit the bill. if I must choose someone I would go with Matt Damon

Max and Elsa...Adolph Greren and Betty Comden.

The kids: Get a bunch of little people like The Munchkins

Posted by Michael Shayne @ 10/07/2002 02:48 PM PST

First of all, EST simply cannot be correct...yet. EST is Eastern Standard Time, and we are still, here in the United Stated, on Daylight Savings Time, which means that BK is currently on EDT.

Now, on the Sound of Munching...the Food Network version of TSoM.

Maria: Sarah Moulton

Mother Abess: Julia Child (who else?)

The Nun Trio: The Two Fat Ladies (Jennifer in spirit) and Jamie Oliver.

The Captain: Emeril Lagasse. BAM instead of whistles!

Liesl: Mario Batali (his hair's the right length, and get those legs!)

Rolf: Ming Tsai.

Max: Alton Brown (oh, bother!)

The Baroness: Martha Stewart.

The rest of the kids...well, you've got me there. Emeril's studio audience, perhaps?

Posted by S. Woody White @ 10/07/2002 03:07 PM PST

Difficult to follow such wonderful suggestions. Being a fan of “The Ritz”. Rita was a wonderful suggestion. I think I’ll go for wider audience appeal:
Mother Abbess: Nell Carter
Maria Dolly Parton
The Baron Willie Nelson
Baroness Diana Ross
Max Michael Jackson
Liesel LeeAnn Rimes
Rolfe Will Smith
The other kids Miscellaneous McDonald’s staff

Major German Officer: George Bush

Posted by Tom from OZ @ 10/07/2002 03:10 PM PST

Witch Queen Of New Orleans (Redbone)
Witchy Woman (The Eagles)
Witch Doctor (David Seville)
Devil In Disguise (Elvis)
Devil Went Down To Georgia (Charlie Daniels)
Devil Woman (Marty Robbins)
Devil Woman (Cliff Richard)
Magic (from Xanadu)
Magic To Do (Pippin)
Magic Woman Touch (The Hollies)
Mr Brockman:
Magical Mystery Tour (The Beatles)
Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf)

But then maybe you don't want pop music1

There is always The Monster Mash etc.

I could get them to you in time if you wanted them!

Now, however did we forget to mention our special party guest last night who joined us through the courtesy of Ma Bell. Our own Craig called from Florida to talk with everyone at the party. Thanks, Craig!

And thanks, Craig, for being the on-the-spot long-distance (or is it long-distance on-the-spot?) reporter for HHW (see yesterday's posts if you missed it) giving an up-to-the-minute report on the festivities.

I am quite jiggy with all these posts - excellent casting suggestions. Finally back at the retro hotel after a very long day. I'll give full details tomorrow, including what has to be the single funniest inappropriate audition by a child performer ever given. Stay tuned.

What If...

Ethel Mermann had been cast as Maria in The Sound of Music?

I care fur his children,
But still the Captain's smolderin'.
He don't think that singing's fun!
He sits on his fanny
And won't romance their nanny.
Oh, you can't get a man with a nun.

Well, I have returned after a day of work and rehearsal. Anyone in the 'burgh on Wednesday night can see the preview of this little cabaret of Dixie's for FREE, as it is a preview nite. Friday night, guests (whom I understand were invited) may pary $75.00 for the show, champagne and desserts. (The fundraising money goes to THE OPEN STAGE THEATER).
Following two run-throughs, I must say that Miss Dixie (Tymitz) has concocted quite the cabaret. It opens with Dixie and I in the afterglow of "romance" and we launch right into "You Wanna be My Friend." Called DOWNTOWN, the cabaret then follows the woman's journey from dumpee to being "Everybody's Girl" as she encounters various downtown types along the way. Miss Lenore Milner, who had a nifty little directing career in Australia is making her singing debut as "Miss Byrd;" while other invisible characters include a lot of Bolcom people. Dixie does "Surprise!" "Open the Curtain" "Fur" and "Black Max" amongst others. I come on somewhere in the middle of "Fur" set up a coffee and table for Uncle Murray the Furrier, then as Dixie and "Murray" exit, launch into "OOOH! My Feet!" (I've always wanted a Loesser song in my repertoire, I just thought it would be one of FELLA's other arias).
So, if you're in the vicinity of the burgh, PLEASE drop in on Dixie Does Downtown.
Back to TSOM:
Maria: Courtney Love
Baron von Trapp: Tom Waits
Elsa: Janis Ian
Max: Bruce Springsteen
Mother Abbess: Tina Turner or Diana Ross (that way we can interpolate one of either of their hit "mountain" songs to give her a little more to do).
Rolf: Sting

The Children:
Michael Jackson
Macauley Culkin
Jean Louisa Kelly
Destiny's Child
Salt'n'Peppa

Sorry I missed the party on Sunday :-( I couldn't remember where it was being held. And I so would have enjoyed meeting you all!

Here are my votes for TSOM:

Maria: Bernadette Peters (since people seem to think she is ageless. I'd *love* to hear her wheeze her way through "Edelweiss")
Captain Von Trapp: Antonio Banderas (since people seem to think he can sing and act)
Max: Nathan Lane (but done as his character in The Birdcage)
The Baroness: Reba McIntyre ("Well, shucky-dern, Georg...you wanna marry her insteada' me??")
The Reverend Mother: Jennifer Holliday ("And I am tellin' you to climb ev'ry mountain!")
Rolf: Joey Fatone
Leisl: Marissa Jaret Winokur
The other kids: Matthew Broderick, Aaron Carter, Cathy Rigby, Judy Kuhn, Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner (humor me on that one).

TOM FROM OZ: Thank you thank you thank you for the packages!! They were SUCH a suprise! You cannot understand how strange it is for me to look at the calendar months June, July and August and see SNOW!! It's bizarre! Haha! And no, I didn't have Maria's CD...but I love it! Wherever did you find it? Thanks again...you're the best.
