10/30/2002:
"THE DEEP DEPTHS"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, today’s notes shall be short because they cannot be long. That is so deep for this early in the morning. That is so deep I surprised even myself with the depth of that deep. To have such deep depth this early is indeed deep, depth-wise. I mean, where do I go from here – oh, a Bock and Harnick reference. I mean, when one has plumbed the deep depths then one must rise to the surface and then what? Everything one writes will be surface rather than deep. And therein lies the deep depth conundrum, dear readers. I have been deep and now I must pay the price which is, by the way (BTW, in Internet lingo), $3.48. What the hell am I talking about?

In any case, I am getting a late start and I must dash off these here notes in a dash. I must let the words tumble out one after another without caring if they mean anything or not. All why everything to is getting market and trembling I toenail. You see, you see – the words just tumbled out one after another, willy-nilly and also nilly-willy and just look at that sentence. That is utter nonsense. Cows could write a better sentence, but if they couldn’t then it would be udder nonsense. We don’t allow groaning here at haineshisway.com.

Well, let’s all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’m madder than a March hare in September. My goodness, that was deep. Click away, my pretties.

Has anyone noticed how deep these notes are today. I feel they have a depth heretofore never achieved. I feel we are the thinking man/woman’s notes today. I feel that these here notes are fraught with meaning and importance. They’re also making me nauseous.

I did manage to get totally caught up with The Sopranos, which I’m enjoying as much as ever. Last Sunday night’s episode was especially good, I thought.

Oh, my, the time has flown (no mean feet) and I must fly as well and when I fly I will have flown. That is so deep. That sentence has deep depth, doesn’t it? I am floored, frankly or even charlesly. I am just roaming around the deep depths without even meaning to. Sometimes it just happens that way. Life – one can never predict when the deep will surface or when the surface will deep. Won’t someone please stop me?

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must get in my automobile and drive in a westerly direction. I must work all through the live-long day and then I must get in my automobile and drive in an easterly direction. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask all your excellent questions. And, of course, feel free to discuss any topics that may pop into your collective heads, especially deep topics filled with depth. Yesterday I asked for a big end-of-month push and got very few results, posts-wise, so today I shall ask for a small end-of-month push so that perhaps that will psychologically cause more posts to occur. That is so deep. In fact, I do believe I have reached the lower depths and so I shall say adieu to you.

- Bruce Kimmel

Questions later...

Just wondering WHICH cows could write a better sentence... Aren't we still waiting for them to come home?

Does anyone move around Los Angeles as much as Bruce Kimmel?

Posted by Robert Armin @ 10/30/2002 08:07 AM PST

Robert.. that was a mean and nasty comment to make about Bruce!!!!!! How dare you.. You are clearly not a good friend of his to make such hostile accusations!

ok.. I'm done mocking the stupid

Posted by Craig @ 10/30/2002 08:10 AM PST

I'm shocked and appalled. Oh, yes, and I'm appalled and shocked, as well!

How DARE someone else pick up on the moving around reference and then someone ELSE pick up on the opportunity to overreact negatively!

Bay! I say, and Pah, too! Harrumph!

Ask BK: I love a song from the stage production of "Funny Girl" called "The Music That Makes Me Dance."

That's not my question. My question, though, is whether you have ever made "sense" of the lyrice in the intro..."And as far as the man is concerned, if I've been burned, I haven't learned."

What the heck does that mean? How come the man doesn't realize that sometimes the ONLY WAY to learn IS to be burned??? In fact, if someone has NEVER been burned, he or she has had NO (that's ZERO, ZILCH, NADA) opportunity to learn.

So to me, it seems like a nonsense lyrice...like maybe the lyricist was tired or lazy or totally not hip and with it!

I'd like a reading, please!

Hey can we talk about the Chat again?...

I just checked out the job listings on Playbill.com, and, lo and behold, a certain website is currently looking for a chat host... Very, very interesting...

As for Ask BK Day...

When it comes to "reduced" orchestras, would you rather hear a totally live orchestra, or one supplemented by synths and/or other electronic means? *For me, it does sometimes bug me if I only see five or six players in a pit, but the sound coming out of the pit attempts to sound like 30.

Since it's currently pledge drive season - Do you listen/watch to NPR/PBS? Do you have a chance to listen to NPR/PBS?

Do you have a favorite among the "big time, spectacular, blockbuster" Broadway shows (i.e. Cats, Phantom, Les Miz, etc.)?

hello everyone!

I loaded a new radio show last night....some new solo releases to sample.

Enjoy

Posted by Donald @ 10/30/2002 08:53 AM PST

Welcome back, Donald, you errant and truant twip. Now, tell us all about the shows you saw whilst in New York, New York.

I'll be making the chat announcement tomorrow. It is funny what trendsetters we all are, is it not? Oh, yes, it is funny.

The merry searchers were back this morning, searching away, and I do hope that all merry searchers are finding the answers they seek. And I do hope that while new visitors are perusing the site that they get lots and lots of good ideas.

A public thanks to Bruce for spending a few minutes with us today on the "On Broadway" channel at XM Satellite Radio. I'm looking forward to a day in the not-too-distant future when I can air the new "First Nudie Musical" cast album on my show!

Posted by Broadway Bill Schmalfeldt @ 10/30/2002 09:48 AM PST

I had a blast doing the show - now all you errant and truant Hainsies/Kimlets, give Broadway Bill a big welcome - and be sure to check out his show.

Here is my deep question for Ask BK Day. Since tomorrow is Halloween, what was your best Halloween and your worst, either as a child of as an adult.

Posted by William E. Lurie @ 10/30/2002 10:12 AM PST

Welcome Bill (although we have already been "introduced" of course).

And welcome back Donald - I sent you an email, but my gershluganah work firewall might not have sent it through.. let me know..

Posted by Craig @ 10/30/2002 10:15 AM PST

kinda swamped getting caught up with things, but here are a few very brief comments about what shows I saw...

AMOUR - charming and very Legrand, Gets was only okay, but everyone else was terrific -- sadly closing this weekend, but I do hope someone records the show to help promote future productions

HAIRPSRAY -- a bit draggy in parts, but overall, very entertaining and a lot of fun

A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE -- great Ahrens & Flaherty score and wonderful cast, great set design and good story....could have been trimmed a bit, but still very entertaining -- hopefully it will be recorded

FRANKIE & JOHNNY -- both Tucci and Falco were excellent, but this is really minor McNally

DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES -- what a mess! Urinetown style book and a Europop dreck score (makes Wildhorn look good)...Mandy was terrific, but the rest of the cast, especially Crawford, is struggling....horrific choreography and a finale that defies explanation

now, looking forward to Dinner At Eight in December with Ebersole, Loudon and Skinner!!!

Posted by Donald @ 10/30/2002 11:04 AM PST

I forgot to mention that I had a lovey dinner with William Lurie and Ray -- lots of theatre conversation and gossip - what a great way to pass an evening!

Posted by Donald @ 10/30/2002 11:06 AM PST

Donald - a great way to pass an evening, or catch one? ;)

Donald - got your email.. I might have to make a similar trip soon too.. will keep you posted..

Can't wait to hear the new radio show - the Andreas album is right there with Molaskey's for my faves of this year

HAINESHISWAY.COM is mentioned on an Australian website proving yet again how jiggy this site is. Click on the link (my name) to see!

Posted by Craig @ 10/30/2002 11:40 AM PST

Hey Craig. This Aussie Has known all the time that HHW is jiggy.

Halloween is no big deal (Bob Fosse Reference)over here at all. A few grade schoolers make things at School but it is a non-event in Australia. Melbourne Cup Day next Tuesday is a far bigger deal - strange world.

Question. What is your favourite Halloween song? (I think there was one in "Applause").
Have cut my posts to a minimum the last few days. I am over my monthly time allocation and will have an excess useage bill with internet provider. Had to hold back on the emails as well.
I listened to an early version of Dance Of The Vampires - recycled Meat Loaf! And very repetitive.
Thanks Donald. I had not heard of "A Man Of No Importance". I do hope it will be recorded.

Dear BK: Do you like t-shirts? The kind with strange or funny stuff on them? If so, what is your own favorite t-shirt?

(My own reads "Next mood swing in just six minutes...please stay tuned!")

I have both Debbie Gravitte (then Debbie Shapiro Gravitte) Alan Menken albums. Originally entitled Part of Your World: Debbie Shapiro Sings Alan Menken and later reissusd under with a new name and cover art as The Alan Menken Album with an additonal track. Now here is the question:

What is the story behind the reissue?

2) When Guy Haines performed at STAGE concerts does he sing in the shadows, his back to the audience, or off-stage somewhere so he won't be seen or does he due it full frontal?

3) If you decided to return to acting tomorrow and a producer would agree to produce a show of your choice. What would it be and what role would you play

Posted by Michael Shayne @ 10/30/2002 03:29 PM PST

I don't know if anyone would care, but VH1 cancelled Liza Minnelli's reality show even before it aired!

Quelle surprise!

Minnelli should consider herself lucky. Her husband was just pimping off what talent she has left. From reports he sound like how Faye Dunaway treated her assistants.

Posted by Michael Shayne @ 10/30/2002 03:43 PM PST

This question for BK is as deep as you can get.

Did you or Guy Haines re-record and sing the fade out on the instrumental version of "I Can't Hide Anymore" on the CD included with the DVD of TFNM? Or did you recycle your original vocal from the soundtrack?

Will "I can't Hide Anymore" be used in the play?

Was "I Can't Hide Anymore" (ICHA in Internet lingo)written specifically written for TFNM, or was it already written conveniently there to use it over the endtitles?

Posted by Kerry @ 10/30/2002 04:17 PM PST

Dear BK,

Have you ever ridden a public bus? I just did, and let me tell you-- it's quite an experience. I think it's just about the best entertainment you can get for $1.25 any more.

Warning: Plethora of Questions rapidly approaching...

1. Questions about MOSTS:
a)What is the movie you have watched most IN a movie theater. How about at home?

b) What is the musical you have seen most (does not have to be ON Broadway..)

c) What is the Cast Recording you have listened to most?

2. Will you be giving out candy on Halloween? and if so.. what are you giving out?

3. What is the stupidest (read: craziest, most embarrassing, or however you would want to answer this) outfit you have had to wear in your career and for what reason?

those are my questions..

"I HAS SPOKEN!"

Did you ever have the feeling that you wanted to go and still have the feeling that you wanted to stay

We are the proud owners of a new car! If you can believe it, this is the first brand, spanking new car I've ever bought (I've always gone for the slightly used before, but with 0% interest for 6 years, who could resist?).

Anyway, my question is: I have posted on several topics of the day about my love for various and sundried Brasilian artists. Do you listen to Brasilian music much, and, if so, whom do you like?

Posted by JMK @ 10/30/2002 05:48 PM PST

Bruce.. I get it.. everyone is being a GHOST for Halloween.. that's why they aren't "here"...

To quote Robert DeNiro in Cape Fear "C'mout C'mout wherever you are!"

So few posts.. and on ASK BK DAY no less....

one.. big.. OY!

Question for BK on "Ask BK Day:"

What are your favorite "mutant monster" movies?
(Since I just watched the sporadically delightful EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS, and since Halloween is upon us, I though that this might be an interesting question).
Although predominantly a 1950's phenomenon, there are still quite a few mutant creature features out there deserving of mention.

Posted by td @ 10/30/2002 07:54 PM PST

Not really an ask BK question, but did you see that Brockhurst Pertwee has been requested on alt.video.dvd in the Mysterious Island thread? Just in case you were in the mood to slap someone silly.

Scary Questions for Bruce:

Since it is that scary time of year, what was the most terrifying moment in your life, either as a child or an adult?

What suspense film has the best score?

What is the best suspense film?

What is your favorite halloween candy?

Posted by Dennis Clancy @ 10/30/2002 08:39 PM PST

Dear BK: What was/is your favorite Halloween costume? Did you or your mother make it yourselves or was it a store-bought costume? What was your favorite thing to get in your Halloween loot bag (i.e. candy bars...candy corn...pennies)? Your least favorite (i.e. apples that had to be thrown away...different flavored Tootsie Rolls...pennies)? Do you believe in ghosts? Have you ever seen one?

I think that'll do for tonight with the questions.

A great big welcome to Broadway Bill!!

brockhurstandpertwee has responded. I don't know why on earth it's so quiet around here. Where is William F. Orr, where is Lulu, where in tarnation IS everyone. This is entirely unseemly. We are having a big bash tomorrow and if the turnout for that is small there will be hell toupee let me tell you that. Hell hath no fury like a Hainsie/Kimlet scorned.

I'm here, I'm here. Errant,
truant, various other -ant
words as well, but here now.

Can't think of a good question
for BK, so I'll ask one that's
mediocre at best:
What is your favorite color of
M&M's?

Alright, sleep calls!

Posted by Jed @ 10/31/2002 12:17 AM PST

Did I hear my name mentioned?

Oy! I am here, although errant and etcetera, lurking as I get the chance. Yesterday, after weeks of study and heming and hawing, my Joe and I bit the bullet and ordered six Karastan rugs for our new house at more than we ever expected to spend on such a thing. We are in sticker shock but happy.

That and mysterious projects which shall not be mentioned now but will be announced eventually upon this site when it becomes time for all to be revealed have occupied a good deal of my time recently and continue to do so.

But here I am, posting at 5:50 a.m. before hopping into the shower (on one foot, no less!) to get ready for work and confessing my shame and errantness and truantness and also truantness and erranntess.

Question for BK? Sure. How the hell do you do it? I mean balancing all of the myriad projects you are involved in. Are you just extraordinarily organized (which I doubt from what I hear of the state of your huge library of CDs and DVDs), or have you sworn off sleep?

Posted by William F. Orr @ 10/31/2002 02:52 AM PST

Hey everyone...(i'll be posting this again in today's comments if BK doesn't beat me to it) But I just wanted to say that I am excited as the next person to celebrate a year of posting on HHW, but when we hit notes #365, it is important to know that it is not our actual anniversary - The actual BIRTHDAY of the site is November 9th. Now I don't see any reason why we can't celebrate both events.. but I just wanted to give the heads up....

Posted by Craig @ 10/31/2002 05:54 AM PST

My Ask BK question (I hope it makes the cut-off):

When you produce a cast album of a production, how do you and the director of the production define your roles? I would assume he/she has some say in the final product.
