"WHAT A REVOLTIN' DEVELOPMENT THIS IS"

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, you won't believe it. I didn't believe it either, and yet there it was, or wasn't. I tried to get to this here site and couldn't. This here site had disappeared off the face of the earth. When this here site will reappear is uncertain - it could take a few hours, it could take a full day. Some of you will get it before others because I have been told that That Is The Way Things Work.

At six p.m. last night, Mr. Mark Bakalor wrote me to tell me there had been a problem - apparently the company with which we registered this domain name had been trying to send the bill for the upcoming year - only they'd been sending it to some address at Mark's domain that is never used. He'd told them a year ago what the billing contact e-mail address should be and they'd never entered it into their system. Therefore, they shut the site down. As soon as he realized what had happened he called them, made the payment and they began work getting the site back up. It's got something to do with "propagating" the site all over the world so that people can reaccess it. I don't know from this stuff, so I'm just hoping the site is up and running sooner than later, otherwise these butt cheeks are going to hear from me personally. As Chester A. Riley used to say, "What a revoltin' development this is."

I had much to talk about but I suppose I'll save it for Thursday's notes, when I know we'll be up and running. Also, be sure to clear your cache because some of you (if you don't) will keep getting the "error" page (especially you AOL users). I want to throttle someone, frankly, but I shall hold my temper (and I hope my temper appreciates being held - it's frequently lonely, you know). All I can say is, what a revoltin' development this is. Oh, let's all click on the Unseemly Button (if there is an Unseemly Button to click on) and see if there's another section.

Well, there is another section, but I don’t know if anyone is seeing it. That is because I am writing these here notes in Word. Then I have to forward them to Mr. Mark Bakalor who will hopefully be able to post them this morning (as of seven p.m. yesterday he was still able to access the site), because I am unable to access my very own website. I find all this heinous (heinous, do you hear me?) and I will be making a list of people to send collective bitch-slaps to. And we were having such a festive posting session yesterday, and all for naught. Now "naught" has all the posts and we have nothing. What a revoltin’ development this is.

Well, dear readers, there’s really no point in my writing any more notes because I have no idea when they will go up or what? Just to get back at those stupid domain people, we should have a plethora of posts as soon as we are able, just to show everyone that we ain’t down yet - oh, a Meredith Willson reference. And so, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must wait patiently for haineshisway.com to once again be the most popular site on all the Internet. In the meantime, I shall eat a cheese slice and try to remain calm. Today’s topic of discussion: Of course, it’s Ask BK Day, but since I have no idea who will see the site when, we shall hold Ask BK Day in abeyance until tomorrow. Today, you may all post scathing things about our domain registrar. You may also post any left-over posts that you weren’t able to post yesterday, such as your casting suggestions for our revival of Fiddler on the Roof. Now, let’s show these people what posting is all about.

- Bruce Kimmel

Let's use these posts today as a barometer of who is reaching the site:

If you're reading this now, post a note letting us know.

If you're not reading this now, post a note letting us know.

Those of you doing neither, post a note letting us know.

Now you know, you crazy people...

I just read the post. I'm letting you know. Do I win a prize??

Reading it at 5.45 am EST. *yawn* not a comment on the site, you understand.

Reading the site. Now, off to work!

Posted by Dallas @ 11/06/2002 03:30 AM PST

Reading the site at 6:58AM New York time.

What is this, Fish?

Posted by Craig @ 11/06/2002 04:58 AM PST

Oh.. I just found out that one of my favorite "overseas" performers in on the Taboo London Cast Recording - Gemma Craven. Does anyone here have it yet and can they give a review?

Posted by Craig @ 11/06/2002 05:53 AM PST

Got the site just fine at 9:27 am EST. Having been through multiple problems with hosting companies in the past with my own web site, I can sympathize. Anyone who wants the name of a peach of a hosting company that actually delivers on its promises (how rare in this world), just ask.

Posted by Philip Crosby @ 11/06/2002 06:24 AM PST

I have read the notes; now, I'm off to work.

Posted by td @ 11/06/2002 06:25 AM PST

Philip -

In defense of the hosting company.. it wasn't the hosting company that had the problem. It was the registrar. Mark hosts this site himself and his service is pretty durn reliable. Well.. it is as long as your domain name is still valid and not expired ;) (sorry Mark..)

I've read and actually posted a reply. Do I get a Star? Now back to my hackin' cough/cold.

It's 6:48 a.m. in California and I'm reading the site just fine.

Craig -- I am such a big fan of Gemma Craven that when my wife and I were in London we called her manager to find out if she was performing anywhere. She was -- in Scotland!

So Kristine and I took a train to Edinburgh and spent a lovely day there, culminating in a performance of 42nd Street with Gemma as Dorothy Brock. She invited us to join her for a post performance party. Then, Kris and I took an overnight train back to London in time to catch our flight back to New York. Wasn't that a lovely story?

Posted by Robert Armin @ 11/06/2002 06:49 AM PST

Robert-

Yes. That story was too too and very very!. I am insanely jealous. I am sure she was amazing as Brock. I have adored her since "The Slipper and the Rose" - and even though I agree with Bruce about She Loves Me fom the BBC - it is still a treat to watch her as Amalia.

She sounds like she has the graciousness one would expect as well!

Posted by Craig @ 11/06/2002 07:00 AM PST

I figured since I had a few moments, I would explain propagating for those that don't know what it is.

The WWW is rather large, as we all know and is made up of many many computers all linked together. Well...imagine all the websites that exist. Each website (such as www.haineshisway.com) has a set of numbers that are assigned to it (think of it as a license plate #). When you request a site, your WWW request is "translated" into these numbers and off it goes to the computer that is hosting the site. Of course - there is never a direct connection between you AND the website you are visiting. Oh no - the data is bouncing through various computers between you and it.

And...since the WWW is so large, it takes time for the various systems around the globe to "update" these translations. This is why some people can access the site earlier than others, and why some could view the site last night and some could not. It all depends on which "path" or "road" is being taken from your computer to here...

Now.. reading that all back..I am not so sure I made it any simpler.. did I?

Posted by Craig @ 11/06/2002 07:10 AM PST

10 a.m. in NYC and access is fine.

I did want to post yesterday about Patricia Clarkson. She has done some fine stage work here in the city. She also was quite good in the TV show Murder One and did a nice guest stint on Six Feet Under. I would've expected more from her work on Carrie, but maybe she was undermined by the direction. We haven't seen it yet-my partner recorded it for viewing later.

Posted by jb @ 11/06/2002 07:11 AM PST

OK.. that's funny.. every time I typed 2 three times, it made a link... I assure you.. they PROPOGATE nowhere :)

Posted by craig @ 11/06/2002 07:14 AM PST

That certainly was unseemly. Here I was just signing on to say that I thought that Howard Stern and Pat Sajak would make a lovely Tevye and Lazar Wolf, when my handy dandy computer told me that the site was unavailable.

But I'm reading the site now at 8:30 am in whatever time zone Arizona is in now.

No probs accessing here on the west coast at 7:38 a.m., and with AOL no less (and I do mean NO LESS).

I thought your "headline" was about last night's election. Ugghhh.

Posted by JMK @ 11/06/2002 07:36 AM PST

Finally - I can see the site. I can post on the site. And let me just say that this is not the only revoltin' development.

We'll still do Ask BK Day tomorrow, however, just in case there are people who still don't have it back yet.

8:20 am in Tacoma WA and I
can get to the site. All is right

Good morning, and I'm reading the site too. When I got back from rehearsal last night, I wasn't able to access the site for about an hour, and then after trying a few more times, it finally came up.

Heigh-Ho!

Back at work. An rested but still feel like "doo."

I hope all the kinks get ironed out and that everyone is able to feed his/her jones real soon!

Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 11/06/2002 08:52 AM PST

I never could get back on at home last night although from the amount of late posts in the unseemly archive for yesterday obviously some people were more lucky.

This morning I kept trying at work and it finally came back up at around 11:00 EST (7:00 in BK territory).

Jose--- are you doing SOUTH PACIFIC as Rogers, Hammerstein and Logan wrote it or are you cutting any songs, adding songs lost on the road, re-writting the book, or what? I think it is still a perfect show as written, but when it was done on tour in the mid-80s with the late Richard Kiley, Meg Bussert and HHW's very own Brent Barrett as Cable (topless part of the time), critics called it dated and it never came in to New York like it was supposed to. I hope your production trusts the material as written.

Speaking of BB, he'll be part of the Encores Concert featuring numbers from the last 9 years on 11/24-25.

Posted by William E. Lurie @ 11/06/2002 09:34 AM PST

Regarding yesterday's discussion of Victor Garber and his playing Tevya in a TV remake of Fiddler on the Roof, it was suggested that he is too Waspish for the role. For the record, Garber is a Canadian Jew. From my Jewish perspective, I think he looks Jewish also.

Posted by steveg @ 11/06/2002 09:39 AM PST

6 of the clock in England and all is well. I was shocked, shocked I tell you, when I tried to log on to the site earlier this afternoon and couldn't. Now sighs of relief abound.

Posted by Allan @ 11/06/2002 09:50 AM PST

Let the countdown begin! Only a few days until the big event....

Bruce - can you at least tell us if the party will be a black tie affair? Or is it jammies, boxers and HANES HIS WAY t-shirts?

Posted by Craig @ 11/06/2002 10:04 AM PST

Perhaps one of the "revoltin' developments" eluded to above by BK is the fact that I wrote him early this morning to let him know that I had agreed to host the chat room on "that other website."

I have explained my motives to Bruce and I would prefer not to address them publicly in this forum. I have enjoyed my participation on this site immeasurably and have made several very good friends as a direct result of that participation. I would like to believe that I will continue to be welcomed here, but if that turns out to be a pipe dream, I extend my sincerest good wishes to BK, GH and everyone else.

Is the William Orr of HHW related to the Wm Orr late of Warner Bros TV?

Posted by Jrand55 @ 11/06/2002 11:41 AM PST

Dear Mr. Mark and BK,
I am reading this now.

Posted by Kerry @ 11/06/2002 12:04 PM PST

I got it!!

Ask BK questions to come later

Posted by Michael Shayne @ 11/06/2002 12:12 PM PST

3:15 in New York, and I am not reading this now.

Jrand55: No. For the last forty years I have been asked if I am related to William T. Orr of Warner Brothers.

Harlan Ellison once asked me, "Are you related to Bill Orr?", to which I repied, "I am him."

And I must bring my own experience to the discussion of goyishe Tevyes. I was teaching in Marquette Michigan, right up on Lake Superior, in 1973, when the local amateur theatre put on a production of Fiddler. There were almost no Jews in the town. Tzeitel was played by a Catholic nun. (She got in the habit, but not in the habit.)

Posted by William F. Orr @ 11/06/2002 12:20 PM PST

Robert-

Hmm. I really don’t even know how to react to your post. I know you prefer to not address them in this forum, but it’s hard to believe there won’t be a discussion based on what you wrote.

Whether or not my reaction is justified or not – I can only say how disappointed I am to hear that anyone who has been a regular on this chat board is now working with the very people that caused this site to be born in the first place. It really rather upsetting. I’m not saying YOU are a bad person – hardly. And I don’t even really know you, except from your posts – but I do know that there has been plenty of stories shared on this site that would make it so readily apparent why working for “that other website” would be just. I dunno – wrong. With the great affection you have had for this site, the fellow readers, and BK’s work – it seems like a slap in the face. Granted, it’s not my face directly, so maybe I am out of line – but when I read your post, I just couldn’t believe it. I still can’t. I can’t imagine the money is worth it either. And lord knows they have loyalty issues (not to mention heinous spelling and grammar..but that’s a different story altogether)

I hope this post doesn’t come off as a public flogging – that’s not my intent. It’s more a reaction of shock, dismay, frustration, surprise and so many other things.

Posted by Craig @ 11/06/2002 12:25 PM PST

p.s. Not to belabor the point.. but these are just my feelings and I didn't intend to start any kind of debate on the subject...

Still shocked to see loyalties divided on THIS site of all sites.. Other sites, sure.. but this one.. yikes.. is there no place safe now?

Posted by Craig @ 11/06/2002 12:30 PM PST

Breakfast time here and HHW has returned to OZ. All I had to do was find those missing ruby red shoes and click their heels together. I am so pleased that wishes are not really children or I would not have enough tea and toast this morning.
I will miss Robert's posts. I wish him well but I will not be visiting. That other place has had time enough to "get professional" and it has failed.

Posted by Tom from OZ @ 11/06/2002 12:43 PM PST

I could read but not post for a while. All this propogation is frightening the roses.

Posted by Tom from OZ @ 11/06/2002 12:45 PM PST

Tom-

re: your ruby red slippers an Oz reference. I am in the middle of "Wicked" - have you read this yet? Very interesting twist on the Wizard of Oz..

Posted by Craig @ 11/06/2002 12:49 PM PST

Oh thank God! The site is still working. I was very VERY (that is two very's) concerned yesterday when I tried for several hours to get to this here site. I'm glad things are fixed.

Craig: Well put.

Has anyone seen Jose lately? I didn't see him post yesterday and he's yet to reveal himself today. I suppose he's swamped with work. That's a good thing I think. For a musician or any other kind of artist there is no such thing as "too much" work. There IS such a thing as tight scheduling though...haha!

Posted by Jason @ 11/06/2002 12:54 PM PST

I believe he posted is yesterday's notes (he was able to access the site) - I could be wrong..

Posted by Craig @ 11/06/2002 12:59 PM PST

Oops...just read yesterday's posts and noticed that Jose has in fact posted THREE TIMES and I didn't notice it. I'm so sorry for the oversight.

Craig: I'm glad you liked the OJ casting. You have no idea how sick my sense of humour can be. :-)

Tom: If you really feel the urge to send me a birthday present then...sure! The VAMPIRES demo would be fun...but don't feel like you need to send me anything.

Posted by Jason @ 11/06/2002 01:04 PM PST

I, for one, would love to see Robert Armin remain close to HHW...to visit and post often.

Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 11/06/2002 01:08 PM PST

Oh, I suppose I'm going to have to comment on today's news -

As I responded to Mr. Armin - people do what they need to do, and nothing, absolutely nothing surprises me anymore. I found the whole business decidedly odd, but I wish Mr. Armin well in his endeavors, whatever they may be.

Posted by bk @ 11/06/2002 01:23 PM PST

I think we would all like to see Robert continue to post. I just think that some of us are kind of surprised and curious about how this came to pass...that's all.

Posted by Jason @ 11/06/2002 01:24 PM PST

I hope everyone realizes that I wasn't insinuating that Robert shouldn't be welcome here...

Posted by Craig @ 11/06/2002 01:32 PM PST

I don't think anyone felt that you were insinuating anything, Craig. Your reaction was typical of those I have received via e-mail, and is totally understandable. It's a weird situation in my estimation, and one I shall have to ponder on. I have been put through too much of a ringer to simply ignore and shine it on. However, I shall try not to be ponderous whilst pondering the imponderables. I'm all about loyalty, loyalty is everything to me, it's how I live my life.

Of course, I am extremely jiggy with all these posts. Maybe we should have site problems every day.

Posted by bk @ 11/06/2002 01:44 PM PST

Craig. It was thanks to this site that I too read "Wicked". I enjoyed it very much. I am hoping that Father Christmas in his wisdom will let me know more about an Ugly Sister (or two).

Posted by Tom from OZ @ 11/06/2002 01:45 PM PST

The only reason I know what that other site is doing is because I am still on their e-mail newsletter list. I did not even realize they had a discussion group. Who even uses the site any more? Maybe we should all go to the discussion group on the site, play dumb, and inquire why BK is not producing for them anymore.

Posted by William E. Lurie @ 11/06/2002 01:45 PM PST

Mr. Armin, it's "allude", not "elude." You're already well qualified to work "over there."

Posted by Noah Webster @ 11/06/2002 01:46 PM PST

Thank you, Noah, for the correction regarding my typo. And thank you Ron, Craig and Jason for, at least, giving me the benefit of the doubt. Out of respect for BK, feel free to write me personally, rather than hash this out on his page. As always, I will endeavor to keep my contributions here positive. I have nothing but the highest respect and admiration for BK.

Posted by Robert Armin @ 11/06/2002 01:59 PM PST

In re: Robert Armin

Fellow Hainesys/Kimlets:

Robert has acted courteously by informing us directly of the situation, rather than letting it arrive here through gossip.

BK has made his feelings known.

I think we all might drop the matter now.

(Not to criticize anyone in particular--I myself love gossip as well as the next person.)

Posted by William F. Orr @ 11/06/2002 02:11 PM PST

I appreciate all your good comments on this weird situation, and I agree that we should just move along. It is something I have to ponder, comfort-wise, and that's really all there is to it. I have always prided myself and this site and you dear readers, that in the end, though we may have fun with certain situations, we ultimately take the high road here and I am very proud of that.

Now, don't forget, tomorrow is Ask BK Day, so be thinking of your excellent questions - even though today was supposed to be Ask BK Day but couldn't because of our heinous website problem. And I do hope that everyone is finally getting the site. Let's hear from the MIA.

Posted by bk @ 11/06/2002 04:01 PM PST

At last!!!

Whatever fershluganah path
my computer takes to access
this here site, it sure as hell
seems to "propegate" slowly!
First noticed problems when I

able to get here about 3:30
west coast this afternoon.

Anyway, just glad we're back

I, for one, wish Robert the very best in his upcoming project.

BK: In light of the upcoming Disney animated adventure, "Treasure Planet," have you ever sailed on a cruise ship? Where did you go? What did you enjoy the most? What did you enjoy the least? (Oooh, an "Ask BK Day" question, at last!)

Posted by SWoodyWhite @ 11/06/2002 06:42 PM PST

Question time:
Do you think "Gold" will be worth its weight of indeed worth the wait after all this time? Have you heard any of the score and do you know if any members of the original cast (Garber & Lane?) are still involved?

Here's something scary that I heard on the news tonight. A couple from New Mexico has been hospitalized for treatment of symptoms that have been identified as Bubonic Plague. A test was done on the rodents near their home in NM and the rodents tested positive for the Bubonic bacterium. Scary...isn't it? And let's thank them for bringing the plague to New York City. The guys on the news said not to worry...but come on!! It's the PLAGUE for God's sake!!
