"IT'S DOTAY WITH ME"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, the weekend is almost here and I, for one, say hoo and ray, not to be confused with bob and ray. I am quite ready to spend a relaxing and peaceful weekend, writing away happily and playing with Luckie. I shall also catch up on some DVD viewing. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

I want to tell you Hainsies/Kimlets that if you haven’t read our current Unseemly Interview with Miss Donna Lynne Champlin, then you are really missing out, so hie errant and truant selves over there and take a gander. Also, if you haven’t heard the latest radio show, you are missing out on our very own Mr. Mark Bakalor and he has been known to bitch-slap people from here to eternity, so you’d better just listen.

Without going into detail, the piece I am currently working on is all about Sex. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, the piece I am toiling and laboring over is all about Sex. I am having a great deal of fun writing the voiceovers for this piece, let me tell you that. Now, I know we occasionally have youthful dear readers here, so do skip this next couple of sentences. One of the people they interviewed for this piece was porn star Ron Jeremy. In introducing him, here is what I wrote: Ron Jeremy, whose johnson is so large that they have to call it johnson and johnson. It’s little things like that (unlike Mr. Jeremy’s thing) that makes the days worthwhile.

I was a lazy loafer last night and did absolutely nothing – not even finish the DVD I was watching. There are times when I am so zonked I can do nothing but sit on my couch like so much fish.

Your posts yesterday were exceptionally exceptional I thought. We even had a visitor whose name I did not recognize and I was rather mystified by his post, oh, yes, I was mystified and I said so, oh, yes, I said so.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because one never knows what is awaiting just on the other side of this here section.

Funnily, until this very sentence there was nothing on this side of the other section. But now we have a sentence and we are off and running, just like a Mrs. Lovett meat pie.

Now, do not forget that the upcoming Unseemly Live Chat is on Monday evening at 7:30 sharp, come hell or high or low water. We do have wicked and wonderful fun at these events, so I do urge you to drop by and join in the merriment and mirth and laughter and legs.

My goodness, these notes are quite informative today, aren’t they? They are just chockfull of handy-dandy factoids. I have learned so much just from typing them. I am now a fountain of factoid knowledge and all because these here notes are quite informative dotay. Now, what is that all about? I typed “dotay” when I meant to type “today”. How does that happen? My fingers just inadvertently go to the wrong letters and suddenly a new word is invented. “Dotay”. So, what should “dotay” mean? I feel the definition of “dotay” is “fine and dandy” or “all right”, as in “that’s dotay with me”. Or, conversely, “that’s not dotay with me.” Yes, I am jiggy with that definition, and if some uncouth interloper is not jiggy with it, well, damn them, damn them all to hell.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, and I hope that is dotay with you. Now that we have a brand spanking new word, perhaps it is time to remake that classic western, Gunfight at the Dotay Corral. What the hell am I talking about? Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday, so what is currently in your various and sundried CD players, and your collective DVD or video players. I’ll start – CD player – I am listening to the new batch of Universal France soundtrack CD reissues and a splendid lot they are. Their first batch of fifteen titles, which came out earlier this year, were spectacular and these are no less so. The highlights include a spiffy new transfer of Jerry Goldsmith’s Papillon, two albums of wonderous Philipe Sarde music, the soundtrack to Godard’s Breathless, and about six others. Highly recommended. DVD player – still watching the Studio One presentation of The Defender. Your turn.

How about a new television series for Mr. Burl Ives called Dotay Crackerby? ABC might be interested.

In my CD player - the ABC TV SPECIAL ONCE IN A LIFETIME NEVER TO BE REPEATED YOU WILL LOVE IT South Pacific soundtrack. This turned out to be not so dotay with me. 8-P

Also the hard-to-find soundtrack to the new film FAR FROM HEAVEN. This is a beautiful score by Elmer Bernstein that I am falling in love with even before I see the movie.

In my DVD player ALL MONSTERS ATTACK! a compilation of trailers from sci-fi and monster movies from 30's to 70's. Whew! Featuring a few seconds of Miss Susan Gordon!

Ron Jeremy is very scaremy.

There.

Is this what the world has come to...that Ron Jeremy who allowed himself to bloat many years ago...is now a sexual icon?

Ah, the ignominy!

Maybe he deserves it, though. I've never heard any bad things said about him. And it's not like he's imposed himself "seriously" into legitimate endeavors like the limited Traci Lords. Yes, that's right. I don't find her endowments a substitute for dramatic presence. Sue me.

: )

Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 11/22/2002 08:39 AM PST

And speaking of prominent acting endowments on ladies, Ron, I will diverge into Star Trek, just to say that I for one was initially unimpressed when Jerri Ryan was cast (and costumed!) for Voyager, as I was also initially unimpressed when Jolene Blalock was cast (and costumed!) on Enterprise--as both castings and costumings were such blatant attempts to lure the hormonal 15-year-old male audience by manipulating their libidos with anatomical objects of extreme size.

But subsequently I was extremely impressed by Ms. Ryan's acting, expecially since she was given the task of conveying strong emotions with hardly a change in facial expression and only the slightest waver in her voice. I was pleased that she had been saved from a life of Baywatch rip-offs that her endowments might otherwise have led her to.

And the same for Ms. Blalock. You see, I am no different from others in my subconscious prejudice and assumption that physical beauty precludes intelligence. There's my observation, for what it's worth.

In my CD Player: Dance a Little Closer

In my VCR: Last night's David Letterman, all ready for my viewing of "Good Morning, Baltimore!" when I return home from work.

Posted by William F. Orr @ 11/22/2002 09:09 AM PST

In the CD player: Hairspray which is an absolute delight, and First Impressions which, despite the allure of Misses Polly Bergen and Hermione Gingold, is not.

In the DVD player: I am finishing up all the extras on Monsters Inc. (which I thought was a surprisingly good film, but I suppose that is to be expected from the PIXAR folks) and next up is that all-time classic Can't Stop the Music.

I always found it amazing that Ron Jeremy had such a career as a porn star. His outsized johnson is attached to a body that can only be compared to that of a hedgehog.

Nothing in my work CD right now but on tape (I have a small cassette deck here for things I don't have on CD) I'm listing to the OSR of The Bandwagon with Fred, Cyd, Oscar, Nanette and Jack. I do love this movie.

At home last night I broke out some holiday tunes and listened to one of the Sinatra Christmas albums (the one from Reprise where he does duets with Frank, Jr. and Nancy and Mr. Crosby pops in, also). In the VCR is an episode of Monk, taped for Anthony, since he's at rehearsal every night.

I don't know from Ron Jeremy.

In DVD: The Complete M*A*S*H 2nd Season. Although BK was only in the first season (and only Episode 23 at that) it was a great show, especially in the early seasons. Like many series it went on several seasons too long, but the first five or six seasons is television at its best.

In VHS: Last night's E.R. with Sally "They Really Like Me and My Goat" Fields.

IN CD: Time for the annual chapter a night of "The Cinnamon Bear", a Holiday tradition. For those of you younger Hainsies and Kimlets, this was a daily 15 minute radio show (actually about 12 minutes of program) that was broadcast nightly for a month before Christmas. It features many familiar radio voices (Verna Felton, Gale Gordon, Joseph Kearns) and is a delightful fantasy for children of all ages. It was broadcast every year from the late 30s to the late 40s and was usually sponsored in every city by a local department store. Does anyone else remember this show from their youth?

Well well well (that is 3 wells) - I have confirmed our mystery guest celebrity. I shall not tell you who it is, because that would be unseemly - since this person is a MYSTERY GUEST. So you all must come and partake in our most excellent chat on Monday evening to find out who it is....

In the CD player in the car: one of the Forbidden Broadway CDs, and my faves are the two miscast Kiss Me Kate tracks and Ethel Merman teaching the Sunset BULL-evard guy to sing.

In the VCR: one of Dear Reader Sandra's Red Dwarf blooper tapes.

Today we drove through downtown Scottsdale. They are putting up new Christmas decorations. My city planners have such good taste. The decorations are large plastic lizards affixed to the light poles.

Oh, and Dear Reader Jason -- how did the audition go yesterday?

Posted by Laura @ 11/22/2002 11:16 AM PST

In the CD player:
Neurotic Goldfish: Chamber Works by Alec Wilder
alternating with
Slim Gaillard: The Absolute Voutest! '46
In the DVD: The Manchurian Candidate. Great commentary by Frankenheimer.
Just heard there's going to be a remake. What, they're going to make it better?

In the late 70's, when I was working on one of my less successful sitcoms, I received a letter from a girl I knew in college, telling me that her brother, Ronny Hyatt, was a fledgling actor, and would I meet with him. I turned out to be no help at all, and shortly thereafter, he grew up(literally) to be Ron Jeremy.
So maybe it's my fault.

Posted by Craig @ 11/22/2002 11:24 AM PST

In my CD Player: The Phantom of the Opera...Dance of the Vampires Demo CD...On the Twentieth Century.

In my VCR: The 2000 Tony Awards

Dear Reader Laura (and anyone else who might be interested): The audition didn't go at all. When I got to the Equity office there was a note posted saying that they would not be seeing any non-union people. I left my picture and resume with the monitor but I doubt that anyone will ever see them. :-( Oh well...them's the breaks unfortunately.

Posted by Jason @ 11/22/2002 11:25 AM PST

Ok. Since I'm not in the biz, I'm interested in what it takes to become an Equity actor. Why? How? Why not? Etc.

Posted by Laura @ 11/22/2002 11:36 AM PST

Manchurian Candidate... New? Better? I don't know what they are thinking.
The speech has been worked on here and in Russia for the past 8 years. It is the most rousing speech I have ever heard. It will sweep us up into the White House with powers that will make martial law look like anarchy....and then I will crush them...for what they have done to you, and for what they have done in so contemptuously underestimating me.
It can only be redeemed by having Patty Duke play the Angela Lansbury role - and winning an Academy Award. 8-D

Posted by Jrand55 @ 11/22/2002 11:38 AM PST

Jrand55: Do you think they could arrange to shoot the scene while she's wearing a string of pearls suggestively wrapped around certain unmentionable areas (this is after all a family web site) covered by a sweater while she sings "It's Impossible"?

FYI everyone, there is a site that has MP3s of Ms. Duke singing greatest hits from Valley of the Dolls (TOTALLY OFF TOPIC). Oh, My G*D

Posted by Ben @ 11/22/2002 11:58 AM PST

I don't know, Ben - but I have that United Artists album and my favorite cut is Patty singing 'I'll Plant My Own Tree' and racing the orchestra to the finish. Orchestra wins by 6 measures although it's really no contest. I still don't know how she got her necklace to do that trick in the movie. (0)(0)

I ended up buying the film Reefer Madness, this week and watched it as well. I'm now curious to know how much the musical follows from the movie like character and storywise. I saw a trailer for the musical and the only scene it basically focused on was the meeting for the parents with the principal which was in the movie. Has anybody seen both the movie and the musical, and if yes how close is the musical to the movie?

Posted by Brandon @ 11/22/2002 12:18 PM PST

Brandon, as I mentioned in an earlier post, there is NOT just ONE "Reefer Madness" musical. There are at least 7 adaptations that I know of (as of my personal copyright search in 1999). Completely different versions have been written and performed in Toronto, Seattle, L.A. and Portland, to name but a few. My adaptation (with Russ Cowan) follows the film quite closely (which is definitely not the case with the L.A./off Broadway version), with the exception of the hit and run scene (though we may be including that in our next run, which is currently slated for February 2003). All of the versions have had marked differences in tone and approach to the subject--the L.A./Off Broadway was in the vein of Little Shop or even Rocky Horror. The Seattle version was more bop-inflected. Our version is a mini morality play, where each of the characters has their own vice but is intent on focusing only on marijuana addiction (for better or worse).

I, too, have that Patty Duke album on vinyl! Of course, I am a VotD freak.

In my dvd player:
Reign of Fire. It's like Howard Hawks meets Quartermass and the Pit meets John Wayne meets Dragon Heart. From an X Files director, no less! awesome sound, nice characterizations and splendiferous fire-breathing dragons.
Lord of the Rings Extended Edition - this one ain't goin' nowhere for a while.
In the car cd: Lord of the Rings Soundtrack.
At home cd player: Rhino's double disc special edition soundtrack for SINGIN' IN THE RAIN.
On Windows Media Player Playlist - the soundtrack to HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE.

CD player - Jack Lemmon (Twist of Lemmon/Some Like It Hot) and soon the new Spike Jones collection from Collectors Choice (3 CDs!).

DVD - John Wayne in The Conquerer. Recently - The 50th Anniversary Singin' in the Rain and Disney's Silly Symphonies.

And I LOVE Patty Duke's VOTD album! Can't wait to hear her version of "The Farmer and the Cowman."

Posted by Robert Armin @ 11/22/2002 12:48 PM PST

Maybe they would have put you in a mask anyway Jason. Let's hope there is someone out there who recognises and wants to use real talent. That book on "Holding Out For A Hero" needs work. Does Anthony need an understudy for his "Pirate".
Strange. I don't recognise the names (or anything else) of any porn stars. Have I been renting the wrong videos all these years?
CD player: The Best Of Linda Ronstadt. A great compilation covering her career (pop) from "Different Drum" to Secret Garden's "Winter Light". It has those beautiful songs with James Ingram & Aaran Neville too.
Philip Quast "Live At The Donmar" and Judy Kay's "Love" cast recording.Where would I be without Francois and Allan? Still playing BK produced CDs I guess. AND WE NEED MORE of them. Can I wait for three weeks or so and hope LOTR arrives for my birthday. I will probably have to go out and buy it myself.Ron and td have convinced me. I also need to buy Potter - which at LAST is to be released here in widescreen format. If it's only three weeks until my birthday it must be less time to wait for Mr Kimmel's diet coke celebrations.
Jason: Is DOTV in your Cd player by choice or mistake?

For those of you Patty Duke posters above who haven't heard the news yet, the former $64,000 Challenge contestant is returning to Broadway next month for the first time since she played Helen Keller. This time she not only sees and hears but she also talks and sings (a few lines) as Aunt Eller in the Cameron Macintosh OKLAHOMA! revisal. I never thought I would see the day when Patty Duke played a role that was also played by Charlotte Greenwood! But there is no truth to the rumor that Aunt Eller will have an identical cousin Aunt Keller.

Posted by William E. Lurie @ 11/22/2002 01:28 PM PST

In other news pertaining to today's postings, supposedly Denzel Washington will be playing the Frank Sinatra role in the Manchurian re-make. No comment of mine could possibly add to that.

Posted by William E. Lurie @ 11/22/2002 01:29 PM PST

JMK:

Thanks for the clarification on Reefer Madness. I have your version only. And I must say that I was relieved that it wasn't unrelenting rock, but rather music correct for the period.

I really hate, hate, hate it any more when music for a show or movie is aggressively anachronistic, on the assumption that an audience can't abide anything except recent musical styles. (Vampires anyone? Someone could make a really wonderful musical of the Polanski movie, you know.)

Posted by William F. Orr @ 11/22/2002 01:34 PM PST

Only one hit come outta Helen Lawson show, and that's Helen Lawson; and that's me, baby!
Now if I were in Dance of the Vampires, I'd plant my feet firmly downstage center, and sing (unmiked, of course) to the rafters:
"Once upon a time there was light in my life..
Now there's only love in the dark;
Nothing I can do,
A total eclipse of the heart."
Before bursting into a warranted chorus of "I'll Plant My Own Tree." (You gotta chop down those trees to get those stakes to kill those ever-lovin' vampires, baby!)

Posted by Helen Lawson @ 11/22/2002 01:50 PM PST

Future Oscar winners in VotD:
Ricahrd Dreyfuss and Lee Grant
Former Oscar winners in Votd:
Patty Duke and Susan Hayward AND Andre Previn should count as a third; he and then-wife, Dory, provide most of the musical entertainment.
Was Mark Robson ever considered for an Oscar? PEYTON PLACE, perhaps?

Posted by td @ 11/22/2002 01:54 PM PST

Don't think Robson ever won the award, td, but it is not Previn....it is someone who appeared in the film. And it wasn't an 'honorary' Oscar.
Dreyfuss and Grant are correct.

Posted by JRand55 @ 11/22/2002 02:03 PM PST

What is a riot are the liner
notes by the one and only

Well, she sure had some
"energy" that needed to be
tamed !

That reminds me of Jason

I should slow down my reading. My first reading of the Francois post was that he was playing "The Little Prince". I was quite excited for a moment. Such a beautiful score. Not an allusion to Michael Jackson anywhere intended.
I am so envious of all this Patty Duke music(?) you have all unearthed. Should it indeed have been dug up?
Loved the Aunt Keller comment William.

Actually, although Andre Previn and Dory Previn wrote the songs in VOTD, it was future multiple Oscar winner and film music master composer JOHN WILLIAMS who arranged everything, orchestrated the songs and provided the underscore for the film. To boot, VOTD was his FIRST Oscar nomination...for adaptation!

DVD Player: Extended LOTR. Hasn't budged for days, except to change discs.

HOWEVER, for anyone out there interested in Easter Eggs who hasn't heard: First disc, in the scene selections, go to the last page and highlight Chapter 27, the Council of Elrond. But don't hit Enter yet! Instead, hit the "Down" key, and a Ring should appear at the bottom of the screen. NOW hit Enter. What follows is the parody of the Council scene, as presented on the MTV Movie Awards. Very funny!

Hey! I have Ron Jeremy in a movie in my collection, but he's clothed througout! No johnson shot of Ron, but since the movie (THE MATINEE IDOL) stars Ken Ryker, I'm not complaining (Oh, a Maltby and Shire reference).

Well, after yet one more call to the free 24-hour customer assitance line, the cable modem is finally back in working condition. YEAH! -And then after everything got fixed, my brother then realized that it was his fault the connection got messed up since he was trying to hook a new piece of equipment into the in-home network, and then didn't realize he had not re-connected everything back properly.

So, what have I learned from all of this:

-That a dial-up connection in Fairfax County, Virginia, is so slow due to all the standard phone line traffic in the area.

-That I depend way too much on the internet, but that's the way it goes nowadays, I guess.

As for what's in my CD/VCR/DVD players... same answer as last week... Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Notta-thing! Ah, the joys of rehearsals! Although I did watch some Jay Jay The Jet Plane videos this past weekend with my totally adorable four year-old nephew.

-I really am having a great time in rehearsals, however, and we had a nice outing tonight with some of the cast and the director and choreographer to my aunt's Filipino restaurant. Can you say, "rice"?

As for Ron Jeremy... Has anyone seen that infomercial he hosts for that "male enhancement" pill? Quite scary. And since they can't say the actual name of the body part in question, it's quite amusing to see how they work around that obstacle.

td: Ken Ryker, Matinee Idol... Fun, self-referential "flick"...

Sorry for all the young eyes reading the posts today.

Dotay?

I actually appeared in a movie featuring Harry Reems (though not in the same scenes).

Have been catching up on some cataloguing of my CDs (yoiks!).

Too much conspicuous consumption. CDs, LPs, DVDs, VHS tapes. How could I afford all this stuff????????????

I have visited others' homes and see neat, spartan orderliness...with a small container of 13-15 CDs and get an embarrassed, "I know you must think I'm terribly extravagant having SO many CDs"...and I wonder, "How can they listen to those few things over and over and over again?" And, I wonder how on earth they amuse themselves with one or two DVDs on a shelf and about 10 VHS tapes, half of which are non-commercial.

I feel so ODD compared to those folks!

Thank you for being sorry for
my......young eyes !

I just listened to Patty Duke singing songs form VOTD. Do you think anyone (a producer, an engineer, an agent, anyone) listened to the album before releasing it? THose were the takes they chose?!?!!!!?!?

I like Patty Duke; I even have one of her albums (more for camp value than anything), but this one? Someone actually had to approve those takes, right?

Posted by Kerry @ 11/22/2002 09:49 PM PST

Ken Ryker ???

You mean the Buster Keaton
of porn ????

Was he in "Babes In Arms" too
?

Got a feeling not everyone's
telling the thruth about what's
in there dvd/cassette player !!!!

Posted by François @ 11/22/2002 09:50 PM PST

make that "their dvd-players"...

Well, Patty then got the seal of
approval from Gene Kelly
himself...and I guess Patty
liked the way she sounded
too!

I speak the truth as to what is in my players.
Robert, I got to meet Harry once, on a university tour.
Also got to meet Mr. Damiano, and, a young woman whose name escapes me, but she was the featured actress (!) in Memories Inside Miss Aggie...
Was Ken Ryker in Babes in Arms? Hmmm, I know that he has had some babes in his arms, otherwise, I couldn't say...at least not dotay.

Posted by td @ 11/22/2002 10:16 PM PST

Ken had the ARMS to be in the
show, but he is not BABE
enough !

Laura: I will explain what it takes to get in the actor's union (AEA) later. We had to work through AIDA tonight and it absolutely wiped me out. I'm going to bed. Have a good day everyone!!

CD playing in the car -- Michelle Nicastro, On My Own.

Legally Blonde is in the DVD player.

Let's see if I can make Monday's chat as I was still coughing furballs during the last chat. I know, I know, (that's two I knows) too much information!

In my CD player at work: HAIRSPRAY (original Broadway cast recording)

In my DVD player: TINTYPES (original Broadway cast). I won it on eBay and it came all the way from Brazil. You can choose English, Spanish or Portuguese menus and subtitles. It also came with a Brazilian magazine (program?) telling about the show. It also has an ad on the back cover for the other DVDs in the series: PUTTING IT TOGETHER, JEKYLL & HYDE, SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE and SOPHISTICATED LADIES (the only one that I don't have). The whole magazine is only in Portuguese. I've always liked the TINTYPES CD but it's always great seeing everything performed within the context of the show.

In the car CD player - the BBC version of A Chorus Line - spurred on by Michael Shayne's mention of it the other day. Michael Shayne, who hasn't emailed me - whassamadda? You don't want my seconds??
Also the BBC recording of 'Ragtime' from the live show in Cardiff. Or should I say Ragtime's Greatest Hits, because the BBC, in its wisdom(?) decided to cut almost the whole of the second act and replace it with interviews with the cast saying things like '..and so we see Mother develop as a real strong woman during the second act'. Yeah, we know that, just give us the show.
François, Le Passe-Muraille, c'est ou?? I wait in vain every day for the postman, and I'm sure Tom and William E are getting molto agitato as well!

What a great day. And remember - re:someone approved the takes:

it took Annette 6 takes to get TALL PAUL right!
