What fun you must have had today, Mr. BK.
My Ask BK question for the day is why oh why do you think Annette Funicello's solo song "I'll Never Change Him" was cut from both the home video and DVD releases of BEACH BLANKET BINGO?

I received a lovely letter from an old friend this morning that cheered me up considerably so I thought I would toss in a few comments.
This is my first post in a while, but I have been faithfully reading every day, now that my office finally allows internet access!
Washington, DC is all abuzz with great theatre this month so Kristine and I are planning on training down in a few weeks. Just imagine, Karen Ziemba, Alice Ripley and Jose Simbulan all doing theatre at one time!
Happy holidays to all Hainsies and Kimlets.

I haven't asked BK a question in a while, so here goes.
Of all the "lost" scores that have never been recorded, what is the most significant score that you would like to see given a full studio cast recording? Your fabulous recording of Drat! The Cat! took that one off my list and One Touch of Venus and Sadie Thompson are on the way, so I'd probably have to say Rodgers & Hart's Ever Green, which never played Broadway after the London run. I'd also like to hear The Cradle Will Rock with the complete Marc Blitzstein orchestral arrangements that haven't been heard since Leonard Bernstein's concert versions in the early 60s. The four available recordings all use just the piano version.
What are your thoughts?

There are now only 4 days until BK's birthday. Have you been to the deli for your cheese slices and ham chunks yet?

Ask BK:
After reading all the reports on Adolph Green's memorial, and knowing you worked with him on the Bells Are Ringing CD, what is your favorite Comden/Green lyric?

For Ask BK Day:
If Friday is indeed your last day at work does that mean you will get to keep Luckie full time?
Also will there be another gathering of Hainsies and Kimlets on this NY trip or will you not have enough time?
Finally: I am reading Miss Carol Channing's book (it's more a collection of stories than an autobiography) and I know you recorded her 73rd HELLO DOLLY tour. In the book she plays "Carol Channing" to the hilt (after all, it's the best character she ever created), but what is she really like when she can drop the character and be herself, and do you have any interesting Carol Channing stories that you could share with us?

What happened to the pictures taken at the N.Y. soiree? Will we see these pretties?

Instead of replacing Vanessa Williams, the producers of INTO THE WOODS are closing the show December 29, a week after Ms. Williams plays her final performance. Her understudy will play the last week.
Since Ms. Williams is the weakest member of the cast, I don't see why they thought her presence was so important to the show. This is truly an ensemble piece and it doesn't need a star name to sell. With the exception of his lyric only shows and FORUM why can't Sondheim run on Broadway? Is he too good or too "special" for the average tourist who considers a Broadway show on a par with a visit to the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building?
The Boot on top of the theatre will have to go back in storage. At least the Broadhurst will be available for some new show, but considering what's in the wings it probably will not be as good as the show it is replacing.

Arnold---
There is only one picture of the NY gathering. Both Susan Gordon and I have sent it to Mr. Bakalor but he has neglected to post it.

Well, guess who is here at the library? It's Football Boy from my English class last semester. (He was the one who had been unseemly to me when I asked BK for a good Jewish insult word.) He is holding a book and looking at it as if he doesn't know what to make of it.

I saw Carol Channing many years ago on C-Span (yes, C-Span) giving a lecture at her alma mater. And it was one of the funniest, knowing, and intelligent hours I have ever seen. Her audience was in her hand. She wasn't speaking from notes or a teleprompter that I could tell. CC is indeed her own greatest creation. I haven't bought her book yet....maybe Sandy Claws will bring it to me.

movies made by the Coen
brothers? Any favorites?
2) What is your favorite Steve
Martin movie?
3) How about a favorite Dustin
Hoffman role?
4) Jack Nicholson?

William: Rumour has it (from a techie who works INTO THE WOODS) that URBAN COWBOY will be moving into the Broadhurst Theatre...though even he added the disclaimer that no papers have been signed yet.

That's all we need. Another mediocre 80s movie on stage. I wonder how Robert Jason Brown who wrote PARADE and THE LAST 5 YEARS got mixed up in this project.

Dear BK --
Have you ever been called for jury duty? Did you have to serve? What was the case about?
How many pounds have you lost on your diet?
Have you ever flown in a really small plane? Did you like it?

You said once that you worked with Elaine Stritch. Which project was that? You said it went well, but do you have any anecdotes to share with us?
What are your three favorite Christmas songs? I assume one of them might be "Turkey Lurkey Time."

There is a picture of you with singer David Campbell (on his website) and Chris Denny. Who is Chris Denny?
What was "The Good One"with Gail Edwards, Penny Peyser and Debbie Zip? (Saw the poster of it)And your thoughts and opinions on it?
When you did the Partridge Family episode that took place on the boat called "The Last of Howard (your character's name) did you know that they were playing on the title of the Sondheim/Perkins film "The Last of Sheila"?
What your favorite song where the instrumental version is better than the vocal version?
If you were to re-record a classic Broadway musical with today's technology (digital and timing (80 minutes per cd))which musical would you chose and why?

2-1/2 hours since the last post? Only 21 posts by 6:45pm??? What an unseemly way to welcome Bruce home from a day of shooting!!! We must have more posts!
Enough of my ranting... I leave it to all y'all.

Two more question:
If you want to play a sound bite from a cd on a website is there a length the sound bite must be without paying a royality? Is there a maxium amount of tracks that may be sampled from any give disk>

Just thought I would answer the following questions:
1) What do you think of the
movies made by the Coen
brothers? Any favorites?
Answer: Have seen Blood Simple, Fargo, O Brother Where Art Thou? and The Man Who Wasn't There. Favourite would have to be Fargo. It should've won Best Picture of '96.
2) What is your favorite Steve
Martin movie?
I'd have to say The Jerk.
3) How about a favorite Dustin
Hoffman role?
Lenny, which is probably also one of his most underappreciated roles.
4) Jack Nicholson?
Tough call but I'd go with As Good As It Gets or One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

Oh, and I was just wondering, who is Luckie? I haven't been posting here too long so I don't know.

Rain at last. And hail. It is a glorious summer. Sydney has bush fires. (Don't ask who is Sydney?). An interesting summer is under way. Hail lasted lested than 30 seconds. That is Melbourne weather for you.

Michael: Have you tried to email me again? It should be working or so says my service provider.

I am home and tired but I had a good time doing the shoot and I do believe I liked my cameraman so much that I may just hire him to do my upcoming film.
Now, where in tarnation is everyone? We need a plethora of posts in short or long order.
Posted by bk @ 12/04/2002 08:31 PM PST
Indeed where is the plethora of which you speak. Can we have posts that are thin or thick as well?
I am off to record about three hours of Connie Francis hits (and misses) for a friend. That will be followed by three hours of Miss Brenda Lee.
Life is so exciting.
Why did I say yes?

Thanks, Robert, for putting me in the same company as Madames Ziemba and Ripley. -And it really is quite a full schedule of shows here right now in DC. And the Spring has some more coming in. I'm hoping to catch Tell Me On A Sunday on Christmas Day since that's the only performance I'll be able to see. *The radio commercial is a little "annoying" - but I guess it's because it's a basically "unknown" show with an "unknown" star, and it will be kind of a hard sell for the Kennedy Center. *And I would love to see her stand-by, Leslie Kritzer do the show too!
-I, too, just got in from a long day - left the house at 9:00am, left rehearsal at 11:52pm. Nothing like a near 15-hour work day to... well... nothing like it. And tomorrow is more or less the same schedule, then it eases up a bit once previews start on Friday.
So, right now, I'm waiting for the snow. I've chatted with some friends and relatives a few hours west of me, and they already have 2-4 inches on the ground. -I know we have final tech tomorrow, but I really do love snow. Guess it comes from being born in Boston - never really lived there, but I guess the spirit of the city is in my blood.
Questions for BK:
Is there any replacement cast - or just a cast member - of a Broadway show that you would have like to see recorded? I know they used to do this sort of thing with the "stars", but really nothing lately except the Vanessa Williams Kiss of the Spider Woman. *I remember laughing out loud in a used record shop when I came across a recording of Raquel Welch's Woman of the Year.
-I would have loved to have Reba record her Annie Get Your Gun.
And on a related note, have you ever scene a replacement cast member who you thought was better than the original?
I think that's about it. If I think of something else before I head to bed in a little bit...
THINK SNOW!

Bruce (if it's not too late to ask questions for answers), what non-theatrical musical singers or groups do you like to listen to? Do you have a favorite (or favorites) where you just have to have EVERYTHING that he/she/they've recorded?
What do you think of The Manhattan Transfer? I was introduced to their music at about the same time that I discovered musicals and I am as passionate about their music as I am about musical theater. They are the only group where I have just about everything of theirs (that I know of).
Posted by George @ 12/05/2002 03:12 AM PST
Tom -Connie AND Brenda? Can't you add some Lesley Gore and Annette Funicello in there as well to break up the monotony? Oh wait....that just may add to it. Never mind.
