"THE MALAISE OF MODERN LIFE"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, I am having a leisurely weekend. Luckie is settling in, although we really shall have to train her not to come lick my face at seven in the morning. That is most unseemly. It seems like everyone was on vacation yesterday, so spare and sparse were our postings, although, that said, the content of the posts was, as usual, most excellent. If you missed anything do use the Unseemly Archive Button and catch up.

Tonight at six p.m. Pacific Mean Time is our Unseemly Live Chat and that you won’t want to miss. If we have your AIM name you’ll get your invite right at six. If we don’t have you AIM name be sure to e-mail it to me in plenty of time. Oh, what fun we shall have and, of course, you never know just who might drop by.

I had the last of my birthday dinners last night (until next year), and it was a good one. Good tasting and Eileen and Chet Atkins-friendly. Also, all past-due sparkling prizes were shipped yesterday and so were the orders for books and DVDs which came in last week. Now, if you are considering buying a book or DVD and you’d like it in time for Christmas (or, if it’s a present if you’d like the recipient to have it in time for Christmas) don’t wait too too long because you know how the mails are around Christmas time.

Well, I promised myself I would keep these here notes short today because yesterday’s were too too long. So, let’s all click on the Unseemly Button below so I can have these here notes be a short story rather than a novelette.

Yes, Virginia, these here notes are going to be a short story today rather than the Gone With The Wind of yesterday. These will be the John Cheever or John Collier notes – short and sweet, pithy and sardonic and filled with the malaise of modern life.

I, myself, am filled with the malaise of modern life which is better than being filled with the mayonnaise of modern life or the mustard of modern life or even the pickle relish of modern life. I am filled with the malaise of modern life just like the people in a John Cheever short story, such as The Swimmer, my personal favorite, along with The Five Forty-Eight. My favorite John Collier short story is, of course, the marvelous Evening Primrose, which just happens to have been turned into an original musical for television by Mr. Stephen Sondheim and Mr. James Goldman. It, too, in one way or another, is about the malaise of modern life. I only read short stories that are about the malaise of modern life because I empathize with short stories about the malaise of modern life. There now, have I beat that particular phrase into the ground with a sledgehammer or have I beat that particular phrase into the ground with a sledgehammer?

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must prepare for our live chat, I must ponder the malaise of modern life. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, anything goes – oh, a Cole Porter reference. Talk about anything you like but talk, darn ya, talk. Talk about the mayonnaise of modern life if you like, or create your own short story subject and talk about that. I shall be checking in often to see how we’re doing and I shall hopefully see all of you this evening for our Unseemly Live Chat.

- Bruce Kimmel

Could it be?

Yes it could!

Actually, I just checked the final number of posts for yesterday and there were more than I thought because there was a volley of them this morning. Excellent. And, of course, we send our warm wishes to Mo.

Posted by bk @ 12/15/2002 10:22 AM PST

Well, I won't continue that thread during this post...

Well, I hope you have another glorious chat tonight. Unfortunately, at 6:00pm PST, I shall probably just be finishing playing "Younger Than Springtime". *There's a nice feature article in today's Washington Post about our production, you can check it out on the web-site - just navigate to the Style Section and then to Sunday Arts.

But after the final chord of the Exit Music, I shall be heading back to Richmond for a glorious day off.

I'm actually about to go ahead and brave the mall - well, "brave" is probably not the right word, since I actually like it when it's crazy and busy... I say that now... I ended up taking advantage of Amazon.com, TowerRecords.com and few other dot.coms late last night and got quite a bit of my shopping done. Hopefully, the UPS and FedEx packages will arrive by the end of this week. There a few things I just need to see in person to make sure they'll be the right fit. Oh, where was I? Oh, well, since I got a good chunk of the shopping done via the net - and this afternoon - I can actually do next to nothing tomorrow which will be soooooo nice.

Well, time for me to get into my trusty '93 Ford Escort Wagon and venture on the highways and byways. Oh, maybe we could list what kind of car we drive - or drove - or wish we could drive.

Have a great Sunday!

That's a good idea, Jose. I have a cherry red Mustang convertible. Unfortunately, when other people look at it, they all seem to see a 1996 Chevy Lumina with screws sticking out of the dashboard.

Posted by Sandra @ 12/15/2002 10:43 AM PST

Modern life - well we all have computers and digital camera and DVD players and widescreen Tv's and scanners...and....well we are THE JETSONS aren't we?

I remember the Univac machine on the Art Linkletter show...and I remember Bob Barker on Truth or Consequences. And I remember You Asked For It. And all of those wonderful things are now household appliances and part of the malaise of modern life.

I drive a 2001 Pontiac Sport Grand Am or Sport Am or whatever it is called. Lovely white to blend in the with the snow. It is not easy to find in a parking lot, but it is easy to drive!

I was listening to the NT South Pacific CD - very nice very up tempo. But - I know the movie starts with the buys chorus numbers, but the play starts with Emile and Nellie....at least I think it does. Somebody help me.

Nice weather here - I am getting ready to watch the extended Lord of the Rings on my satellite!

My next to last gift to give arrived yesterday! I am done and done and done!

Looking forward to the CHAT!

Now it's someone else's turn to talk....I yield the floor.

Where is Jane Hathaway when you need her?

Tonight at six p.m. Pacific Mean Time is our Unseemly Live

Why can't it be nice?

This website I am to doing to pay homage, tribute, honor, praise, acknowledgement, praise, accolade to BK is taking a little longer than I thought. I don't want it to be just a boring information page. I want color! I want pictures! I want sound! I want reviews!
And all of this is taking longer than I thought. I want it to be the ultimate Bruce Kimmel music page. Something that scholars go ue 100 years from now. (I think i'm getting carried away a tiny bit here)

So maybe before the year is out I will post what is done so far and my dear Hainies and Kimmelts can give me feedback.

Posted by Michael Shayne @ 12/15/2002 11:01 AM PST

SOUTH PAC: Yes, the movie and the NT production open with the Sailors. But the original - and the Arena Stage production - open with Emile and Nellie - and Ngana and Jerome and Henry. *There's actually a mention of this in the Post article.

NOW I'm off..

-Off what? That's subject to debate.

Posted by Jose C. Simbulan @ 12/15/2002 11:06 AM PST

Guess what I found while surfing the web during the wee hours of the morning? There is a new Christmas production of Forever Plaid playing in Pasadena. Shhh -- don't tell Dear Reader Sandra, because I think I'll see if I can get tickets as a surprise!

Maybe we'll be in the LA area over the 24th. Maybe we'll crash BK's Holiday Do.

Posted by Laura @ 12/15/2002 11:07 AM PST

You want mayonnaise? Ok... try the new Hellman's flavored mayonnaises, My favorite is tomato bacon. Is that any relation to Kevin Bacon? Let's see, he was in... never mind.

Jason,

Were the doctors that blunt
with your friend Mo ? How
cruel !!!!

We'll sure keep him in our
prayers and hope for the best.
We share the burden, if we
may.....

BK,

No, no, no , yesterday's notes
were not too long !!! I so
enjoyed what you said about
all the talents that make up
your repertoire of singers.

What you say about them is
such a reflection of you, and
such an interesting insight of
how you work and deal with
other talents........

Hope this doesn't sound like
some kind of mayonnaise ?

Well, it's a shopping day: birdseed for the cockatiels, cookies for Goldie (my Old English Shlepdog), sox for work, a 120 W. flood bulb for the kitchen, paint and primer for some shelves, and Dr. Pepper. I just pray I can stay away from the DVD shelves.

I was planning on seeing FRIDA tonight, heard great things about Alfred Molina's perf, before the film vanishes from Las Fake-us. How long is the live chat? Can I do everything my heart desires?

Posted by KT @ 12/15/2002 12:30 PM PST

Mayonaisse no thank you. I like undressed salad. (maybe some lemon juice). My friends tell me that dressing "brings out flavours/flavors". To me is just covers the flavours. Sauces etc to my mind just are ways of covering up culinary mistakes. (except if the sauces are deliciously french - Ah! The saucy French). So there it is out in public. My undressed secret life.
My car: Mitsubishi Lancer. 2 doors and of course the car is red - they go faster don't they? My Colin said I should have a red car. So I did. Cars - "things" for getting me to somewhere else and back again. Public transport is not really an option where I live - except for a "tourist" steam train which runs on Thursdays and Sundays"

Great article, Jose. And I agree. I like the idea of discovering the beautiful island and culture first, then seeing it over run by the military. 8-D

Posted by Jrand55 @ 12/15/2002 01:02 PM PST

Shlepdog! My dogs, Fosca & Magnus, just wondered. My partner would like to know if you find an anti-Cd shelf spray. I would be a walking cloud of such spray if he could get some. Images of Charlie Brown's friend "Pigpen" come to mind. You're certainly fitting into the HHW family KT.I thought FRIDA was a "spin off" ABBA movie. Can't imagine Molina playing the title role - even with wig!

Posted by Tom Guest (from OZ) @ 12/15/2002 01:20 PM PST

After "Chocolat" I guess Molina
can play..... anything !!

Posted by François @ 12/15/2002 01:28 PM PST

Hi Tom,
Goldie is really a Sheepdog, but being the adorable lummox she is, she shleps rather than "sheeps"--altho she does tend to herd the cat into a corner, when she's not trembling: Fear-Of-Feline Disease.

Frida was directed by Julie Taymor (Lion King)and stars Salma
Hayek in a bio of Frida Kahlo, the famed Mexican artist, who was married to Diego Rivera(Molina); they had a very tempestuous relationship, to say the least. (Probably had major paint fights, I imagine). Anyway, Molina's performance is being touted as Oscar material, and I am a film adorer, especially indies.

No, there's no anti-CD sprays yet, but you could send him to DVD/CD-Anon or DVD/CD Watchers, where he could stand up and announce how many CDs he did pass up during the week.

Glad I fit in--I just got the Warm Fuzzies!

Posted by KT @ 12/15/2002 02:27 PM PST

PS to Tom: I just reread your post, and I guess I fell asleep
during the day we did Accuracy in Speed Reading class. So YOU'RE the CD junkie--my condolences, but I'm right there with you. Love those shiny little circular thingies!

Posted by KT @ 12/15/2002 02:39 PM PST

KT,

What's the name of the cat ?

Posted by François @ 12/15/2002 03:41 PM PST

"Those shinny little circular
thingies" can make nice Xmas
ornaments, matter of fact !!!

Posted by François @ 12/15/2002 03:44 PM PST

Le nomme de le chat est Sammy,
a grey-striped tabbycat, who thinks he is a sheep-dog Terminator.

Posted by KT @ 12/15/2002 03:54 PM PST

Francois (I have no sedilla-is that a sedilla?-on my keyboard!)--can you imagine a tree decked out in CDs and DVDs?
What a novel idea--just don't hang any laser discs, they're too heavy. Well, maybe one on the top.

I still haven't left for Walmart or even left my computer desk...
Now go I.

Posted by KT @ 12/15/2002 04:00 PM PST

KT,

Just before you go --
Walmart's gonna love to see
you come !! --....

Your keyboard doesn't have a
cedilla because it's a female
keyboard ! :-)

Sammy sure is a swell name
for a cat ! Love it ! sammy and
Goldie, our new children
stories series !!!

Now, "de le" is "du" --
contraction 'cause "de le" is
hard to pronounce.... and
"name" is quite close in
French: nom....

So, le nom du chat est
Sammy.
Cela aurait pu être
"Mayonnaise", mais
"Mayonnaise" serait parfait
pour un chat JAUNE et non
rayé de gris !

Do you follow me ?

End of today's French
initiation!

Miaou !

Live chat in forty minutes. Be there or be square. Be there or be round. Be there or be triangular. Be there or be bitch-slapped from here to eternity. If for some reason your invite doesn't show right at six, IM me at "haineshisway" and I'll make certain you get in pronto. And don't forget, we must all keep posting - we must not be derelict in our posting duties. We must post until the cows come home and then when the cows come home we must post some more.

Posted by bk @ 12/15/2002 05:19 PM PST

I proclame that tonight live chat
should be called Sammy !

What makes Sammy run ?
-Goldie !

I can't join because the
computer I use is a working
tool and I'm not supposed to
be "fooling around with it"......

For those of you who wants
some MAGIC, please check
the official site for Chitty Chitty

If you aren't chatting, you aren't enjoying such people as Lauren Bacall, Brent Barrett, Luckie the Vegetable Lying Dog, and everyone else.. get jiggy... get into the chat room!

Posted by Craig @ 12/15/2002 06:51 PM PST

LdyFrank, if you're online, we're waiting for you in the chat room. Please e your correct screen name to BK so we can invite you in.

If anyone comes by, stop in the chatroom, we're having ham and cheese and lovely conversations.

Posted by td @ 12/15/2002 07:02 PM PST

Hi,
I just tried to IM Aura 18 to get in, but she is "not online" at present??
My screen name is Ldyfrank (don't ask, it's a long story).
I apologize for being late, but it took me 2 hours to pick out 19 pairs of sox at Walmart; I have no sales resistance. I did NOT go to the DVD racks however. I am pacing myself and saving it for Friday, payday.
Guess I missed the chat.

Posted by KT (aka Ldyfrank) @ 12/15/2002 07:05 PM PST

KT, check your preferences and see if you have group chats blocked.

You better get in here if you can!! Lauren Bacall and Brent Barrett are chatting with us!

Posted by Laura @ 12/15/2002 07:09 PM PST

KT, I put you on my buddy list, and you are not showing up as being online. Do you have a block on your list?

Posted by Laura @ 12/15/2002 07:12 PM PST

Francois:
Il s'appelle Sammy? C'est domage

Yes, I have a block on my IMs...but no block on group chats...would that be under "chats" in "preferences"?

Posted by KT @ 12/15/2002 07:19 PM PST

If you have your name blocked, then no one can see you to invite you in. You show up on our "offline" list.

Posted by Laura @ 12/15/2002 07:21 PM PST

KT -- unblock your IM name so we can see you and invite you in.

Posted by Laura @ 12/15/2002 07:24 PM PST

Boy,

What a chat KT and Laura had,
and for all of us to read...

I'd hate to have my
name...blocked !!!

WE didn't have Lauren, so we
had Laura....

Posted by François @ 12/15/2002 08:41 PM PST

What a nice chat we had--and what a surprise that Brent and Betty showed up! I was glad to get the real dope from Brent about what went down with the album. Shocking.

Posted by William F. Orr @ 12/15/2002 09:08 PM PST

I missed Lauren Bacall and Brent Barrett?!?!? DAMMIT!

I was away at a simply lovely holiday party with some of the people I did MOBY DICK with. Bryan Batt was there and we had a lovely chat. In fact, he suggested I send my pic and resume to the FORBIDDEN B'WAY people and tell them that Bryan recommended me (he did the show for a couple of years)! SO!! I have an "in"! Isn't that exciting? Isn't it just too too?

So far no transit strike--we'll see what happens by rush hour.

Thank you all for such wonderful vibes and for saying such nice things about Mo. I'm sure he'd be flattered, and it sure makes me feel good to know I have such a wonderful bunch of people in my family.

Posted by Jason @ 12/15/2002 09:15 PM PST

Ahh, finally finished with
moving (certainly one my least
favorite things to do, though I
seem to do it quite a bit).
Relocated an hour north of my
former home to a little
Bavarian themed tourist town.
Great place to live (I've spent a
couple summers living here
before), as long as you avoid
downtown like the plague on
weekends. Only so much
accordian music one can take
before going absolutely nuts. I
must say, however, downtown
looks simply fabulous right
now, with lights lights lights
everywhere for the festive
season.

Sorry I missed out on what
seems to have been a
wonderful (as always) chat.
But I'm happily reconnected to
the internet sooner than
expected, so I won't be
deprived of HHW!!!

Posted by Jed @ 12/15/2002 10:07 PM PST

Sounds like you guys had a great chat tonight. Hope that at least some of the fun gets to be relayed to those of us who can't join it - for whatever reason.
Will we have a forbidden Jason?
Fascinating dialogue with KT and Laura. I feel as though Francois and I have been eavesdropping. I wonder if Adam was an evedropper.

Posted by Tom from OZ @ 12/15/2002 10:39 PM PST

I am sorry I missed out on the chat. I got togther for dinner with a few artist friends. We wanted to see each other before the holidays.

As for cars, I usually drive a white minvan. A '98 Chrysler something or other. Very comfortable. Very utilitarian. Very anonymous. My other car is a turquoise and white 1956 Nash Metropolitan. It's great to drive in nice weather; it has no air conditioning, so I don't use it much in the summer. Its name is Benny, and he always gets lots of smiles when I take him out. The car isn't worth much, but it sure is cute.

Didn't Lois Lane drive a Metropolitan?

I guess this answers the question, "Does anyone still drive a Metropolitan?

Posted by Kerry @ 12/15/2002 10:44 PM PST

Good morning.

Good day of shopping - a little bit of stress, but it was my own doing. I just couldn't decide which store to go to first, and ended up taking a very roundabout route to every place I wanted to go.

Good show tonight.

Good drive back to Richmond.

And I just read the good review on-line of the show!

And I can't wait to try out my new espresso machine in the morning!

Did anyone log the chat? I would love to "hear" the tidbits regarding Brent's CD. And Lauren Bacall? Really?!?!?!?

And, now, some good sleep. Nitey-nite!

Posted by Jose C. Simbulan @ 12/15/2002 11:43 PM PST

Doggone it, BK, there's a COW in my kitchen, with my address on his choke collar. Goldie is very near-sighted and thinks it's another sheepdog. 'Nite all!

Posted by KT @ 12/16/2002 12:26 AM PST

OMG, Kerry - I once parked beside a Metropolitan and was so stunned, I took a photo!
Lois Lane (Phyllis Coates) drove a car that looked a bit like one, a Nash - Lois Lane (Noel Neill) drove a 1956 Plymouth with push button transmission.
Damn - I left the chat too soon. 8-(

Posted by Jrand55 @ 12/16/2002 02:33 AM PST

Isn't there any way that chat could be done without AOL? I participate in chats on other less popular and more esoteric sites than HHW and don't have to use AOL. You don't even need AOL on the site for the label that won't be mentioned (although I will not participate there). Surely with the amount of chat programs around one can be set up directly on this site which would be available 24-7 for anyone who wants to use it. If enough people use the "unseemly donation" button can this be done?
