02/01/2003:
"HELLO, MOLLY!"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, so far Molly has been enjoying herself very much. She likes the yard, she’s sweet and she’s even fun. We shall see how the rest of the weekend goes. Last night, I went to dinner with a book dealer friend, David Aronovitz, and his lovely wife Nancy. I’d sent him a copy of Benjamin Kritzer and he told me he really enjoyed it a lot and wanted to know how much was real and how much not, and he said he was very much looking forward to the sequel. So am I, if we ever get through the morass of commas, semi-colons, mistyping, paragraphs, missing words and on and on and on. Tonight I will be going to the little soiree for Tony Walton, and I shall be accompanied by our very own and lovely Miss Tammy Minoff, who performed on a grand Tony Walton set in The Will Rogers Follies. I shall have a full report for you later.

One nice thing about a dog is that you walk a lot. Molly loves walks and I don’t think she was getting many in her other situation – we took four count them four walks yesterday. I did discover later last night that she has an occasional gas problem and let me tell you her gas problem is potent, oh, yes, her gas problem is potent and I may have to purchase a gas mask.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below so we can see what’s happening on the other side. I feel that there might be something happening on the other side, I feel it strongly, I see dead people and by gum and by gooly I feel there is something happening on the other side of these here notes. Now, wait just a darn minute – hold the clicking. Has anyone noticed that I inadvertently typed “gooly” rather than “golly”? You see what a mere lip of a finger will do? Has anyone noticed that I just typed “lip” instead of “slip”? Now, that’s what I’m talkin’ about. That’s what I’m dealing with on every page of my book. I mean, what is a mere lip of a finger? Fingers can’t have lips but they can have slips and the world goes round and round and round – oh, a Kander and Ebb reference. We’d better click right this very minute before I go on for another twenty minutes.

I knew something was happening on the other side (which is now this side – the previous side is now the other side). Why, we have an Unseemly Trivia Contest question today, so why don’t we get right to it right this very minute.

A hit comedy. Later turned into an Academy Award-winning film. The play was directed by someone who was about to become a movie star. The play featured one actor who would go on to appear in a classic 70s film – that same actor would have a very short-lived television series on which yours truly guest-starred – said series was created by someone who is today a major motion picture director.

Name the hit comedy. Name the one (or more) category it won its Oscar for. Name the director who was about to become a movie star. Name the actor and his classic 70s film, and (don’t hate me) name his short-lived television series. Bonus point if you can name the series’ creator who is now a major motion picture director.

Remember, DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS TO THE SITE. You may submit your answers to me via e-mail at bruce@haineshisway.com or simply by using the Ask BK Button located on our home page. Answers will be accepted till midnight Monday, Pacific Mean Time.

Speaking of Pacific Mean Time, don’t forget our Unseemly Live Chat tomorrow at six, Pacific Mean Time. I’m sure it will be lively and sparkling as usual. If there are any uncouth interlopers simply ignore them until they make their presence known (we do know they like to be silent and then bring up their favorite topic). We shall simply do what we do and that is that. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible. Also, Donald will have a brand spanking new radio show up, too, and if you’ve been missing any of them stop it now and tune in immediately – it’s the best show in town.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must do more corrections, I must do errors, I must take Molly for her walks, I must play with her in the yard. Today’s topic of discussion – continuing our decade by decade of favorite films we come to the 60s, a grand and wacky decade for film. So, name your favorites – I’m still catching up and will post my favorite 50s films later today. Hey, wait just a darn minute. Have we totally forgotten that this is Febrooary? It’s Febrooary, for heaven’s sake and I almost didn’t mention it. And speaking of Febrooary 1st, a little birdie (who then went bye bye) told me it might just be dear reader Kerry’s birthday, but I have had no confirmation. If someone (Kerry or otherwise) would provide confirmation then we will immediately have a big party here at haineshisway.com. Meanwhile, post away my pretties.

- Bruce Kimmel

As lawyer for the family of Miss Sephronia Snail, I'd like to demand the return of Miss Snail who was last seen hanging from the ear of one of the facial customers after the facial was completed and she was stating she would pay $25 for another facial. Obviously Sefronia was abducted by this woman.

Return her at once.

So when will we be able to purchase Magnet Mitts and Chiropractic Jackets on this here site?

It is obvious from a late night post yesterday that the other side still reads this site. Which is more than can be said for their site.

Favorite 60s films? Off the top of my head "The Producers" and "The Graduate". I liked "Funny Girl" despite the fact that it was at least half fiction and BS gave a great performance as BS but did not at all remind me of Fannie Brice. At the time I thought the 2 part Russian "War and Peace" was brilliant but I don't know if it holds up today. I'll leave others to remind me of more.

First, even without confirmation, I will wish Dear Reader Kerry a happy birthday. Even if it's not his bd, it's good to get the wish in early to avoid crowds :-)

TD, you have so many of my favorites on your list, one in particular is West Side Story. I've mentioned this before but I remember it as one of the first big screen Hollywood musicals I ever saw and I wanted to be Jet when I grew up. Oh, that movie was so thrilling to me, then. It's kind of sad to see it now with an audience and hear them laugh and snicker at the dancing through the streets and the breaking into song at what they think are inappropriate moments. No matter, I still love that movie.

I also remember A Hard Day's Night and Help! Both Beatles movies made/make me very happy.

Am seeing The Hours later today but I will check in later.

I can't go, though, without saying my thoughts and wishes are with the families of the crew of the space shuttle Columbia. What a sad event.

Posted by Ben @ 02/01/2003 09:17 AM PST

Well...I tried like the dickens to whittle this list down but c'est impossible! It's like choosing the favorite among your children. After compiling it, I asked myself what kind of life I lead--REAL or REEL! Yet when I think about it, although I remember seeing many of them in movie theatres, quite a number of them I saw on network television in the wee small hours (that's how plentiful they were at the time). Ah well, times change and now you can watch them on cable, on VHS and DVD. Still, I wonder - HAVE I LEFT ANYTHING OUT?!?! Anyway, here are my favorites from the 1950s. I'll put them in separate posts, so they're not too long. First up are the Musicals...

MUSICALS An American in Paris - Summer Stock (I love the great energy the entire cast put into this film and Judy's dancing. Pshaw about her weight!) - Singin' in the Rain - Les Girls (Kay Kendall and Mitzi a delight plus those naughty costumes!) - Carousel - The King and I - Oklahoma - South Pacific - Daddy Long Legs - Funny Face - Silk Stockings (Peter Lorre was so funny! Great numbers: Fated to be Mated, Silk Stockings, All of You, The Red Blues.) - The Bandwagon - Love Me or Leave Me (Cagney just great)- Calamity Jane (Doris Day. A rip-roaring good time, better I think then Annie Get Your Gun) - There's No Business Like Show Business (Dan Dailey, Ethel, Mitzi, Donald & Marilyn, family and show biz)- Gigi - Moulin Rouge (50s version with Zsa Zsa) - The Best Things in Life are Free (The story of DeSylva, Brown & Henderson. Dan Dailey again. The Birth of the Blues ballet. Few remember that Sheree North was a dancer before she was known as an actress.)

Favorite 1950s film comedies...

COMEDY Auntie Mame - Born Yesterday - Cash McCall (One of those talky films that I like) - Champagne for Caeser (Does anyone remember this one?) - Designing Woman - Desk Set - Father of the Bride - Houseboat (The kids, Cary, Sophia all delightful.) - How to Marry a Millionaire (Great comic performance by Marilyn) - The Seven Year Itch - Indiscreet (Another talky film but I love it for that) - It Happened to Jane (Jack Lemmon as friend) - It Should Happen to You (Ditto previous and the unique Judy Holliday) - Mr. Roberts - My Sister Eileen - Roman Holiday - Sabrina - Some Like it Hot - Susan Slept Here (One of my favorite Debbie Reynolds films) - But Not For Me (These comedies Clark Gable did later in his career are wonderful.) - Teacher's Pet (Ditto previous) - That Touch of Mink (The script, the acting, the everything) - The Girl Can't Help It (Wonderfully quirky film. Is this a comedy or a musical? Jayne was adorable and Julie was so sexy.) - Pete Kelly's Blues (such a sad Peggy Lee)

Posted by Donna @ 02/01/2003 09:33 AM PST

Favorite 1950s dramas...

DRAMA Ace in the Hole (Love Wilder's cynical side) - Sunset Blvd. (Ditto previous) - All About Eve - People Will Talk (Another talky I love. Great dialogue. This was the film Mamoulian made after Eve.) - An Affair to Remember (Cary was supposed to do this film with Irene Dunne in the 30's but couldn't at the time.) - Anatomy of a Murder (That real life judge!) - Ben-Hur - Bus Stop (Marilyn can act!) - Giant - Dial M for Murder (Except - why did Grace stay on the phone so looong?) - To Catch a Thief - Vertigo - North by Northwest - Picnic (That dance!) - Rear Window (Perfect) - Rebel Without a Cause - East of Eden - Stage Fright (Marlene) - No Highway in the Sky (Marlene again) - Sudden Fear (Joan's film noir) - Autumn Leaves (Another Joan, with heart) - The Best of Everything (Joan again. The film's a great ride.) - A Summer Place (Elegant film for its ilk. I remember reading an article where Dee said she applied milk to her face to get that lovely complexion.) - Summertime (Heartrending Katherine) - The Rainmaker (Ditto previous) - The African Queen - Love is a Many Splendored Thing (A four-hankie movie, all of which I used) - The Bridge on the River Kwai (Such a good story. David Lean, a favorite) - The Caine Mutiny - The Country Girl (Bing, what a rat!) - The Killing (Excellent early Kubrick. Not to be confused with The Killers) - The Man with the Golden Arm (Harrowing) - The Nun's Story - The Quiet Man (Great!) - Witness for the Prosecution - A Face in the Crowd (Andy Griffith's film debut and he was no Andy Taylor or Matlock in this one!)

Posted by Donna @ 02/01/2003 09:35 AM PST

Other favorites from the 1950's...

WESTERNS High Noon - Shane - The Naked Spur (A new James Stewart and a young and beautiful Janet Leigh) - The Big Country (Wyler and Peck are two of my favorites) - The Searchers (A very good Natalie Wood.)
SCARY Invasion of the Body Snatchers - House of Wax - The Thing - The Night of the Hunter (Still gives me the creeps!)
ANIMATED Of course, there were many more but these I especially liked: Alice in Wonderland (I love her crankiness! She reminds me of Ally McBeal.) - The Lady and the Tramp (For animation, story and songs by Peggy Lee)

Now - onto the 1960s. Oy!

1965--Dr. Zhivago

First post! At the request of Bruce I am posting this email that I sent him last night. I look forward to posting here occasionally and will work on my favorite films of the 60s list later as I am off to work right now. FYI, Gooie (not Gooly!) is a high school nickname derived from the extrememly long, drawn-out pronunciation of my first name.

Dear Mr. Kimmel,

Hello. Greetings from Maryland.... Clear Spring, not Metcalfe! Remember me, the Guy Haines of Earth-2? We corresponded some time back for a short time. I hope you are well.

Please forgive an abrupt question but I have been fondly listening to the CD that you produced of the classic 1950s "Superman" series and was wondering if there is any hope for a continuation of this superb soundtrack in a second CD? I've recently been catching "Superman" on TV-Land and, as happy as I am with your bountiful production, I am hearing many great themes on the broadcast episodes that were not included on the CD. I read a recent column on HainesHisWay in which you stated you are not presently producing CDs but that that might change in the future. I am hopeful that perhaps someday you might give us a second helping of that classic series' thrilling and heartwarming music.

Notwithstanding the coincidence of our names and having a mutual friend in Jim Pierson, I must tell you that whenever I check out HainesHisWay I am frequently amazed at the similarities in our musical and pop culture tastes. I might have told you that my favorite cartoon holiday classic is "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" and was happy that you included "Winter Was Warm" on your Christmas compilations. I don't think that I ever mentioned that in addition to liking Dark Shadows, I also collect Peter Pan memorabilia (both Disney and non) and was tickled several years ago to find your "Peter Pan" compilation CD. Guy Haines even sang one of my very favorite tunes on the CD, "When You're Alone". (When I bought this CD I was initially excited to see little photos of the contributing artists, thinking I would at last get a glimpse of Mr. Haines' face... of course I was sadly disappointed to see that the photographer snapped the picture when Mr. Haines had begun to fan himself with some sheet music.) There are other resemblances that I noticed but I won't take up your time.

Anyway, whether you have time for such projects in the future or not, please consider this email a "Thank You" for another wonderful CD of music from my (our) youth! I was going to post this on HainesHisWay but, like your Guy, I am a bit shy (and would not some of your site's frequent posters be confused?)

Sincerely,

Guy Frederick Haines, II

Happy Birthday to Kerry!

The President is about to speak.....

Dear Reader Donna has chosen my favorites as well....but I will add Valley of the Dolls from td's list just because...and will also add The Carpetbaggers and Harlow because of Miss Carroll Baker.

Donna - I love But Not For Me as well as Teacher's Pet...the 1950's Clark Gable...LOL. Doris Day's knee collapse after being kissed by Gable and Carroll Baker's face when Lilli Palmer brings out Gable's birthday cake with about a hundred candles on it....priceless funny stuff!

Hmmmmmm....very good Unseemly Trivia Question. I am probably the only person who has not guessed it yet.

My friend SuzzyF promised to visit today. Hopefully we will see her first post on this happy/sad day.

Well, I have been most errant and truant, missing in action for the entire past week. I was in tech rehearsals for a play, the world premiere of Nadav Zohar's "Russian Roulette" at my high school. We opened last night, and to great acclaim. Apparently, I gave nightmares to about half of the audience with my portrayal of a psychopath. We have one more performance tonight.

I just heard about the tragedy of the space shuttle Columbia blowing up on re-entry this morning. Apparently there was some questioning over the fact that the first ever Israeli astronaut was aboard. I hope that that was not why it exploded. That would be too awfully sad. My hopes are with the friends and families.

Oh yes, Happy Birthday Kerry!

We need confirmation re Kerry's birthday.

Thanks to Donna for her comprehensive 50s list - I thought I would be the first to mention many of the films which others had neglected, but she covered most of them. Here are my faves:

Welcome to Guy Frederick Haines II (yes, he's real)!

Finally, yes, our hearts and prayers go out to the families and friends of Columbia.

Hey, I'm glad to hear that Molly is having fun with you. Hopefully she will be able to stay.

I will try to make the chat tomorrow night. I think I will be able to because Alias is on here in Canada at 8pm as well as 9pm (on ABC). Was anybody else as impressed as I was with their post-SuperBowl episode? Wow, it was unbelievably amazing. My sister called me afterwards and said she was amazed and she stayed up late and watched it live, cause it was so good.

I was at Club Price this morning. That is where I heard the news of the Challenger crash. They actually had CNN playing there on all their tvs. So horribly sad. I almost started crying as they showed the profiles of each crew member. I cannot even imagine what their families must be going through.

This made me think of the crash in 1986. I can remember being in 10th grade and we were at play rehearsal after school, when they stopped us and told everyone.

Very sad day today.

I can officially state now that January was our best month ever - even though it started off extremely slowly compared to December, and despite two days that didn't register stats at all, we went through the roof and bested December by a fairly large margin. Isn't that exciting? Isn't that just too too? More later - let's get some posts going, shall we?

We got us some celebratin' to do. That's what I'M talkin' about. I am jiggy with it, let me tell you that. Mr. Donald Feltham looks most excellent for his advanced age, which is sixty-two.

On another note (Bb), Mr. Mark Bakalor has assured me that our Unseemly Photo Gallery will be up for your mental and visual delectation within the next two days. Isn't that exciting? Isn't that just too too?

A Very Happy Birthday to both Kerry and Donald!

Today we're celebrating my young son's birthday, who is going to be eleven on Wednesday. (btw, he read Benjamin Kritzer and loved it! natch!) So I have seven (count them: seven) young boys sleeping over tonite. I've bought them favors and prizes for games to be played, rented Ice Age for them to watch with plenty of popcorn and bar-b-que potato chips to nosh on, ordered pizza and soda, baked a birthday cake with whipped cream frosting, and we'll have fresh blueberry muffins for breakfast -- what more could they ask for? And maybe, just maybe, if i'm lucky, they'll be kind and not make too much noise or too much of a mess, although I'm sure they'll be up most of the night, if not all of it, playing Nintendo and Game Cube. What fun!

So, Kerry and Donald, what are you doing to celebrate your birthdays?

Posted by Susan Gordon @ 02/01/2003 05:26 PM PST

I've been going though the extras of the DVDs that recently came in, and noticed on the MUSIC MAN DVD that Ron Howard's appearance in FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL is listed in his filmography.

Good for him! Too bad he didn't agree to do the buck and wing!

Yes, it's my birthday! I thank you all for the good wishes. I would have confrimed my birthday earlier, but I had to work.

I want to wish Donald a very happy day today.

I'll list a few of my favorite 60's films. These will do until I think of more.

"The Music Man"
"Gypsy" (I know it's not chic to to like it, but it was the first version I saw of "Gypsy," and I'm fond of it. And I love Natalie Wood).
"Fanny" (stll a delightful movie)
"Miracle Worker"
"Mary Poppins"
"Sound of Music" (It's awfully well done, although it does get a little gooey)
"Thoroughly Modern Millie"
"Splendor in the Grass"
"Inside Daisy Clover" (it's got a lot wrong with it, but I still like it)
"Good Neighbor Sam"
"How to Steal a Million" (Audrey Hepburn and Paris! *sigh* and Peter O'Toole's eyes were SO blue.)
"The Great Race"
"Mr.Hobbs Takes a Vacation" and "Dear Brigitte" (I'm a sucker for this stage of Jimmy Stewart's career)
"Charade" (Audrey Hepburn, Paris AND Cary Grant!)
"Sunday in New York"
"World of Henry Orient"
"Days of Wine and Roses" (I love Lee Remick too)
"The Pleasure of His Company"
"The Notorious Landlady"

Oh, that's enough for now.

I hope there's cake in my future tonight. (Hear that, Jose?)

Floating down the stream of time, of life to life with me
Makes no difference where you are or where you'd like to be

It's all too much for me to take
The love that's shining all around here
All the world is birthday cake,
So take a piece but not too much

Sail me on a silver sun, where I know that I'm free
Show me that I'm everywhere, and get me home for tea

It's all too much for me to see
A love that's shining all around here
The more I have, the less I know
And what I do is all too much

For all our dear reader late night and early morning denizens - go directly to the home page, click on the Guy Haines Photo Gallery link, then look for the small link to the Rogue's Gallery. Yes, Virginia, Mr. Mark Bakalor has finally gone and done it.

Good morning, all! At least it's early morning here on the East Coast.

I just got in from a post-show feast. Excuse me. Wonderful food!

I had two shows today, and after the matinee I had the pleasure of meeting our very own Jason. We only got to meet for about five minutes, but it was a nice five minutes. And to keep him up to date, I gave him a printout of yesterday's and today's (this morning's) notes for his reading pleasure. I'll let him fill you in on his theate-filled weekend here in the nation's capitol once he gets back to NYC tomorrow. Hopefully we'll get to spend more time when I'm in NYC in March. ...another H/K Get-Together..

As for cake... Well, just tell me what you'd like, and I'll make it. Or would you like me to surprise you?

Happy Birthday to Kerry!

Happy Birthday to Donald!

-And, coincidentally, I kind of had chunks of ham and cheese in the wonderfully right macaroni and cheese I had tonight. Four types of cheeses and prosciutto! YUM!

-And dessert was a White Chocolate Marscapone Cheesecake! YUM-YUM!!!

JMK,

It has been brought to my attention by one of the Dear Readers of these here notes that on January 13, 2003 you made the following remark in the Haineshisway Chat Room -- "Someone who was here was also on A Kvetch's archived chat." Since I am "A Kvetch", please explain to me what my "archived chat" is. Thank you.

No Lawrence of Arabia?

WEL - I got the Superman CD from Amazon last week so it is available there. If you do a search for Superman CD it will be obvious which one you want.

What a great bunch of posts!
