"I AM A VOTING MEMBER"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, I have become a voting member of an online DVD Academy and for becoming a voting member I get sent DVD screeners to vote on. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I now get DVD screeners to vote on. I asked to be on the “library titles” list, but if they have extras from other categories they send you those, too. And so, yesterday I received The Tuxedo, Jackass, the Movie, and Python II. First, of all, may I just ask if there was a Python I? That one must have gotten by me. In any case, I watched The Tuxedo, which was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen, even though I like Jackie Chan and Jennifer Love Hewitt, despite a one-note performance, grew on me, like a fungus. I guess they now think that audiences are so stupid they will sit and watch anything. Which brings us directly to Jackass, the Movie. I’ve never seen Jackass, the TV Show, so I didn’t know what the deal was. The blurbs on the front said it was gut-busting funny. Well, I lasted six minutes, and if that’s gut-busting funny then I wonder what that makes Young Frankenstein, or Trouble in Paradise, or Chaplin or Keaton or Laurel and Hardy. Of course, it cost almost nothing to make and it was a hit. I haven’t had the nerve to open Python II yet.

What am I, a voting member of an online DVD Academy all of a sudden? I also watched The Magnificent Seven (I’ve had the DVD since it came out and finally got to it) and what a terrific movie it is. It’s rather leisurely paced by today’s standards, which I found refreshing. The cast is, of course, top-notch all the way, and Elmer Bernstein’s score is a lesson in how to write music for a film.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below, because I must pull myself together and head off to two count them two morning meetings.

Have I mentioned that I am a voting member of an online DVD Academy? That sounds like a Gilbert and Sullivan song, doesn’t it?

I will say that it’s an absolutely glorious day filled with blue skies and sunshine for miles. Perhaps I shall even jog a little later in the afternoon when I return home.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must anoint myself with balms and gileads, not necessarily in that order, I must shave and I must shower, I must clothe myself with garments, I must be fine and fancy-free and must skip gaily from one meeting to the next, where I shall be charming and lovable in my own special way. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – DVD, coming next, A Little Romance. CD player, a Les Baxter two-fer from Collectibles. Your turn.

- Bruce Kimmel

Break out the party hats and colored tights and pantaloons. I would like everyone to party with Dear Reader Arnold M. Brockman as he celebrates his wedding anniversary today....

DVD - Just watched 8 WOMEN and I loved it. It's like what would happen if Agatha Christie and Claire Booth Luce would colaborate on a script and get Jacques Brel or Michel Legrande to do the songs. What a great and enjoyable film. Next up is SWEET CHARITY.

VHS - I want to watch the NYCO NEW MOON this week before I see the Encores next week. Since Encores often cuts so much book that it makes it difficult to follow the plot I find that reading a script or watching another version first helps.

CD - While at BROADWAY BY THE YEAR 1939 I picked up a copy of BBTY 1946 from last season. Much of what marred 64 on stage is gone on the CD (dialogue by non-acting singers, a lot of unfunny material by drag queens, a finale that gave "camp" a bad name) so the CD is full of great songs by great singers like Alix Korey, Liz Callaway, Tom Anderson, etc. which is usually all BBTY is about. Since that was all the recent one consisted of I think Mr. Scott Siegel got the message.

Also I've been listening to Melissa Ericco's new CD. It is quite good but had I heard it without knowing who was singing I would never have guessed. I like the "new" Melissa but now I'd like to hear an album by the "old" Melissa as well.

Happy Anniversary to the Brockmans!

DVD Online review service...how kewl. Are you REQUIRED to review what they send you? Will you be forced to write a review of said JACKASS:THE MOVIE as opposed to JACKASS:THE SANDWICH?

I keep hearing about this 8 WOMEN movie... Perhaps I should buy it instead of 8 MILE....

In my DVD player THE AMAZING MR X starring Lynn Bari and Mr Turhan Bey.

In my CD player HARD TO GET by Miss Giselle McKenzie - yes, again.

In my VCR RHAPSODY with Miss Elizabeth Taylor and Mr John Ericson - yes, again.

I am living in the past, it is a foreign country, they do things differently there - I am happy to say.

In my DVD player is the bonus DVD that came with the reissue of the Chicago Soundtrack. Stop your snickering, I know I've been taken advantage of.

In my CD player is "Sondheim: A Musical Tribute." Last night I had the, er, pleasure of watching one of my 6th grade students perform a middle-school version of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." This CD is the antidote.

Posted by dlevy @ 03/21/2003 09:10 AM PST

dlevy - what was the funniest part of the "Forum" you saw?

Posted by Jrand52 @ 03/21/2003 09:15 AM PST

My VCR is the only piece of equipment seeing any action lately: tapes of the latest "Six Feet Under" and "Queer As Folk" episodes.

I'll probably put something in my CD player this afternoon while I'm folding my laundry. -Which I find surprisingly therapeutic at times.

Oh, and virus alert... Dear Reader, Pam, asked me if I had sent her an e-mail with an attachment... As usual, I hadn't and I didn't. And I had just done a virus scan, and nothing came up... So, scan, scan, scan!

Posted by Jose C. Simbulan @ 03/21/2003 09:16 AM PST

Jrand: No, I'm not "reviewing" these DVDs - we vote (like the Oscars), on things like special features, menu design, all that kind of stuff - then they give awards at the end of the year.

Posted by bk @ 03/21/2003 09:20 AM PST

Nice. Thanks, BK. Only four days until the masses (that's us) can get THE BEGINNING OF THE END DVD with commentary by Miss Susan Gordon, Ms. Flora Gordon, and Mr Bruce Kimmel (that's you)!

I just put a fresh batch of CDs into the player in my car this morning: Excerpts from Prokofiev's ballet ROMEO AND JULIET, OBC of LES MISERABLES, OBC of SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, OBC of SHE LOVES ME, and the Bette Midler cast recording of GYPSY. And before all you purists out there suffer apoplexy, yes, I do own the OBC of GYPSY with La Merman, but it is on vinyl, and try as I might, it does not fit into the slot on my dashboard.

Posted by Jay @ 03/21/2003 09:42 AM PST

Ah, bk, A Little Romance! A charming film....

When I urged my then-14-year-old (or thereabouts) daughter to watch it, she gained a whole new respect for me! I'd be interested to know if the extras make the DVD worth getting. And, of course, the big question:

Whatever happened to the boy who plays Daniel?

Posted by Pam @ 03/21/2003 09:53 AM PST

Jrand---
Yes as a regular at this here site I think you will appreciate 8 WOMEN a lot more than 8 MILES. The only thing I can think of that they have in common is that the star of each is a bleached blond. Perhaps you can combine them... watch 8 WOMEN and eat M&Ms.

By the way, 8 WOMEN is the kind of film you will want to watch twice. Once you know the ending --- my lips and fingers are sealed --- you'll want to see it again with this in mind and see how much actually points to this ending.

Happy Anniversary les Brockmans! Is your Dear Reader son Craig doing anything special for you (since without you, there may not have been a him ;-)

To continue something mentioned by Dear Reader Jose, I also received an e-mail. It came from Dear Reader Philip Crosby. It had an attachment and a subject line pertaining to Billie Holiday. I deleted said e-mail unopened because it was not really from Dear Reader Philip. As we have said before, Scan, Scan, Scan. Jose, you should write a song about that.

Dear Reader Kerry and I met for coffee this morning, and he loaned me a plethora of CDs to listen to. The first one I put in was the Brent Barrett Lerner one. It is as wonderful as you all said.

Posted by Laura @ 03/21/2003 10:03 AM PST

I know that BK will soon jump in here and decry the dearth of posts and ask where everyone is and then make bitch-slapping threats galore. So let me confess.

I have indeed been in Tarnation for the last several days, and what a lovely nation it is. Home of the Tar Baby, I believe, and the national dance is the Tar Aunt Ella, so delightfully performed by Captain Hook.

I have, of course, donned two (count'em, two [2]) pointy party hats for the simultaneous celebration of Arnold M. Brockman's wedding anniversary (not to mention that of Mrs. Brockman) and Hapgood's Good News, hereinafter known as the Hapgood News.

Not having seen either movie, I will certainly advise Jrand52 to buy 8 Women instead of 8 Mile (as I am sure he will advise himself)--unless, of course, he wants to see exactly how much of a stretch it is for Enema to play a poor boy from Detroit who achieves fame as a foul-mouthed rap singer. Talk about playing against type!

CD Player here at work: Lolita, My Love, an unauthorized copy of the Boston cast, featuring the divine Dorothy Loudon as Charlotte Haze. But I am still waiting for BK's studio cast recording, which I am sure will arrive some day, and we will all be eager to post casting suggestions.

CD Player at Home: Matt Bogart, our own Brent Barrett's Lancelot. Although I think too much of Bogart's material runs to bombastic arias, I love his rendition of "Proud Lady". His underwear ad ain't bad either. 8-)>

VCR: What else? It's Friday. A blank tape to record the finale of Farscape (@#$%#$# Scifi for canceling it!) and another standing by for Bullshit.

What a wonderful bunch of listening and viewing we are all doing.

Thank you all for the recommendation, I have just order 8 WOMEN from the suggested www.deepdiscountdvd.com. This site was first suggested to me by Dear Reader JMK over a year ago, and I use it frequently. I notice that they have the WSS DVD widely discussed on HHW (the most popular site on the WWW) yesterday for $23.96 (why pay $39.95?) - if someone would like to CIO.

Mike

Vinnie "A groove! I can't believe it" Cirille.

Dear Reader Laura.
We don't hear news (except for a brief mention last week) of Megan. Is she OK these days?

Boy I've been busy this week so haven't had a chance to catch up with HHW.

Anyhoo, in my PC CD player as I write is the double CD George & Ira Gershwin in Hollywood (that would be George and his lovely wife, Ira), courtesy of young François - merci, mon ami.

In the DVD player, Further Tales of the City - this is far ruder than I expect American TV shows to be! Whenever we get American stars on shows like Graham Norton they always express surprise at the things he says and does and they say things like "Can you show that on British TV?" as though all American TV is severely repressed. So imagine my delight in watching this!

Off to see 'Ragtime' in London tomorrow - can't wait!

Posted by Allan @ 03/21/2003 01:16 PM PST

Oh yes - congrats to les Brockmans!

Posted by Allan @ 03/21/2003 01:17 PM PST

Nothing in the vcr or dvd - I don't care for such things. All those actors look so cramped inside the little box that is my TV.

A cheapo collection, Great Overtures from the Musicals, is the only CD in the changer that's not work related...

Only the Lonely by Sinatra is there because some poor fool wants to sing One For My Baby with the same ending Frank had.

Then there's The Rothschilds and, on the computer, Mr. Wonderful. For my upcoming Bock project, it looks like I'm going to have to transcribe Charlie Welch and 1617 Broadway as none of the usual suspects have the sheet music.

Casette player has a third Bock I must transcribe from: Man in the Moon (a charming puppet show). Anyone have Itch To Be Rich?

I love seeing what everyone else is listening to and looking at.

In my CD player: the new revival recording of FLOWER DRUM SONG, but I haven't listened to it yet.

VCR: THE SCARLET CLAW, one of those Universal modernized Sherlock Holmes movies with Basil Rathbone. They may have been B-movies in the 1940s, but I love all of them.

laserdisc: ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES. Haven't seen it in awhile so I stuck it in the machine last night to watch tonight.

DVD: CHOCOLAT. Haven't seen it since its theatrical run, so looking forward to seeing it again.

Is anyone else looking forward to the new release of WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT next week? I loved this movie, thought it really brilliant filmmaking, and can't wait to see this new anamorphic remastering and the special features they're offering, too. Also, the three Roger Rabbit cartoons that played in theaters are going to be included in this release in anamorphic widescreen for the first time. Another reason for buying this set.

To answer JRand52's question from waaaaay up there...

They changed every instance of the word "virgin" to "maiden." Understandable, I suppose. Except for the one line when Pseudolus leaves Hero and Philia together and tells them to be careful, but not to worry, because "he's a maiden too!"

THE ALAN JAY LERNER ALBUM - still great, even though it is missing anything from:

Congratulations all! It's a party kinda day.

In my CD player at work: nothing.

In my CD player at home: nothing.

In my DVD player: nothing. I don't know what's wrong with me.

In my VCR: a tape to (possibly) tape Mr. Sterling and Antiques Roadshow. I have no idea what may be pre-empted. Otherwise, I have to go to my sister's house and help her steam clean two not-so-easy to clean easy chairs. Then on Sunday, we have to move these cleaned chairs to our parents' house. Hopefully, it won't be raining, like it's been doing for the last week or so.

In Playbill.com news: Michele Pawk, Jane Powell, Herndon Lackey and Gavin Creel have joined the cast of BOUNCE! [My exclamation point.] Michele Pawk takes the role of Nellie, a Gold Rush dance hall girl, who marries well again and again, previously reported to be played by Faith Prince, who left due to a scheduling conflict. Jane Powell and Herndon Lackey will play Mama and Papa Mizner, Addison and Wilson's parents. Gavin Creel is Hollis Bessemer ... was this character in the Mendes workshop version?

Yawn!

Good mornin', y'all!

Took the day off...and, ohmigosh, is that PM??????

Ah, well.

In my VCR: a tape to record the series finale of "FarScape"!

On deck, but not yet in my DVD:

"Lethal Weapon," "Lethal Weapon 2" and "Lethal Weapon 3" -- all DTS!

New in my kitchen: A 6-quart pressure cooker! Wowee! Yowza! Whee!

And now for the real thoughts on my mind, lest any one of you feel I am trivializing what is going on in the world:

Was anyone else just a little bit "not" in "awe and shock" at the footage of the earlier barrage on Baghdad. Maybe it's never been done in "real life" before, but it was mostly anticlimactic, and terribly sad. While I'm glad some of the Iraqis are jubilant at the prospect of becoming free -- I also ache for the lives lost and to be lost.

There's way too much braying going on in the newscasts and not nearly enough responsible reporting.

Must the highlight of a newscast be how many Tomahawks were launched and how many B-2s were in the air and how much each shot is costing?

Is it just me?

At any rate, we ought to be doing a lot of praying or meditation to imbue the atmosphere with good thoughts.

Felicitations to Hapgood, the Brockmans, and to Jed. I am happy for all of you. I agree with Ben from yesterday that cake is most definitely in order. What world needs is more cake. (almost a Hal David reference but not quite).

CD's:

--Another Vera Lynn CD
--The Best of the Andrews Sisters
(I just realized as I typed this I seem to be listening to a lot of World War II music.)
-- Soundtrack to "Lost Horizon"
--Dolores Gray "Warm Brandy"
--Rupert Holmes "Widescreen"
--The Best of Gogi Grant
--"Holiday" America

Thanks to all who came to my rescue. if you haven't checked out www.brucekimmel.com in while a lot of the pages have been updated, the guest book is up and running, the annoying (for some) red backgrounds have been eliminated although there may be an odd page here and there. Also added some older interviews with some key rep players and an amusing article by Jennier Piech on what is like to record with Bruce Kimmel.

Anyways I do love feedback and would love to get more feedback good or bad on the site. What would you like to see? What do you think is missing? Click on my name and let me here from you.

George: There's nothing wrong with having nothing in your audio and video players. I've had many a stretch of weeks where that was the case for me. And will most likely have some more of those weeks to come in my future.

Congratulations, Mr. Brockman. Is Mrs. Brockman celebrating, too?

I would bring a mille-feuilles with chocolate pastry cream. I just mastered a master's recipe, and it is merveilleux.

Francois, Kerry, recently I discovered a wonderful French bakery in Manhattan. This week I had pain au chocolat one morning, and chocolate-chip brioche another, and a palmier a third.

This weekend I may bake a Pithiviers...au chocolat. A contradiction? Peut-etre. Delicious? J'espere que oui!

Contratulations to Kerry Butler on the Little Mermaid and television gigs. She is terrific. I cannot wait to see more of her work.

Kerry: I'm sorry to tease.. didn't mean to. You're more than welcome to come to rehearsal tomorrow to partake of the goodies.

freedunit: Which bakery did you discover? Chocolate Chip Brioche sounds absolutely wonderful! Ever try a double-baked brioche? And which mille-feuilles recipe did you just master? Is it published? Or one you learned looking over the chef's shoulder? And at this time of night I can't remember what exactly is a "pithiviers"?

-And it's been a while since I've made the biscotti - the smell of the almonds as they bake is intoxicating!

Do you wear a pith helmet when you make pithiveirs?

All this wonderful music all over the country. Wooohoooooo. And I just turned on TCM, and what should be on but Lana Turner in THE MERRY WIDOW! I did get the VHS, but I like the idea of watching it along with a few hundred thousand other people all across the country.

Jane Powell singing Stephen Sondheim? Why does this suddenly seem so perfect? Hope she brings enough Polident to keep those choppers sparkling white!

Wow! A post from freedunit...did I miss something, or has he been gone for awhile? Welcome back! :)

To Dear Reader Megan -

My wife was diagnosed with Diabetes when she was 33, got through a pregnancy at age 40 (which is "high risk" without any complications) and is still a whirlwind of activity now. It can take some time to figure out your doses, but you will get it under control. Please email us if we can offer any suggestions or support. Hang in there!

Hapgood - hwo did the team do??

Jason - audition results??

Michael - web site's really something. Maybe BK will add a like to HHW for those who would like to view your efforts.

Kerry - where did you get your Gogi Grant CD?

Ask BK: Got a question? Ask Bruce Kimmel...
