"THE ATTACK OF THE ALLERGIES"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, here it is, the last of March. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, it is time to send March marching and time to let April have its day. It’s also apparently become allergy season because I’ve had several allergy attacks in the last few days, including one in the middle of the night last night. I was attacked by an allergy, but I took a pill and won the allergy attack, I put the allergy attack in its place, I clobbered the allergy attack.

Yesterday, I attended the little paperback show and saw lots of people I know and had fun perusing, although I made no purchases. The neatest thing that happened happened when I first arrived. I was looking around, going up and down the aisles of dealers. Suddenly this fellow was staring at me, then he started to smile, then he came directly up to me and said, quite loudly, “I know who you are.” I said, “You do?” and he told me he loved my movies, and that he’d just finished listening to all three count them three commentary tracks on Nudie Musical. He went on and on about it and it made me feel quite good. He then introduced himself – Max Allen Collins, the author of the graphic novel, Road to Perdition, as well as many other things, including several films. Isn’t that a lovely story? It actually made my day.

Well, on this last day of March it is time to put on our pointy party hats, time to don our colored tights and pantaloons, time to break out the cheese slices and ham chunks, time to dance the Hora or even the Wah-Watusi. And why is it time to do these things? Well, I’ll tell you why, because why should I withhold such things from you? We have a birthday to celebrate, that’s why. Our very own Ann turns twenty-two on this very day, the last of March. So, let us all party until the cows come home and wish her a very special haineshisway.com birthday greeting. On the count of three: One, two, three – A VERY SPECIAL BIRTHDAY GREETING, ANN!

Say, I have an idea. Why don’t we click on the Unseemly Button below so we can begin the festivities? Isn’t that a sparkling idea?

My goodness, the festivities have begun. If you missed any of the lively and sparkling goings-on over the weekend, you really must use the Unseemly Archive Button to catch up. Many interesting facts were revealed, and we, of course, had a lively and sparkling Live Chat last night, with a full room of guests. We are also having a celebrity chat this Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. Pacific Mean Time, with our very own Alison Fraser. I do hope you’ll all be able to be there, and be sure to tell your friends and neighbors as well, as Ms. Fraser is delightful and fun.

Last night I watched the film Ringu, the original Japanese version of what became The Ring. This is one of those films one hears about – “The scariest movie ever”. The same kind of thing one heard about The Blair Witch Project, which was about as scary as eating a donut. Ringu has an interesting Twilight Zone-ish kind of plot, and it has some creepy images, but it’s hardly the scariest movie ever, nor do I think it wants to be. It’s a minor film, but it does create a certain atmosphere. The trailer for the American version is included, and it looks dreadful – full of the over-hyped loud crass “thriller” elements I’ve come to revile in American films. What else is new?

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must send the final fixes in for my book, I must do many errands and whatnot and then, of course, I must party until the cows come home in celebration of our very own Ann’s birthday. Today’s topic of discussion: Since we’re celebrating a birthday – if you could have any cake or dessert of your choice on this very day, what would it be? We’ve done desserts before but never been this specific. We want all the details, we want mouth-watering descriptions. We want to pig out. I’ll check back in a bit, so, post away, my pretties.

- Bruce Kimmel

Happy Birthday Ann!!!

In your honour, I will have a slice of an imaginary confection made up of white chociolate, rasperries and cream - all non-fattening, of course.

Posted by Allan @ 03/31/2003 09:05 AM PST

This is the first time I've had a first post and it would have to have a spelling mistake in it, wouldn't it? Or maybe I could get away with saying 'chociolate' is the Romanian spelling for chocolate??

Posted by Allan @ 03/31/2003 09:06 AM PST

My homemade cheesecake!!! Not only is it easy to make, I prefer it to almost any deli or restaurant cheesecake I've ever had. It's sort of like Sarah Lee creamcheese cake used to be when it first hit the stores and was just refrigerated but never frozen. Freezing it ruins the whole texture.

That said, a very happy birthday to the future Mrs. BK. I didn't realize how young your future wife is, BK. You are almost robbing the cradle!

By the way, to me Max Allen Collins' major credit was being the last good writer on the Dick Tracy comic strip before it turned into the unreadable mess it is today.

Just to let you all know that the new Broadway Radio Show (spotlighting the songs of Maury Yeston) is now up and running -- enjoy!

Happy Birthday, Ann!

I would prefer to celebrate with an almond bundt cake. If you have a pan and the mix - you've got the cake!

Yes, as was briefly discussed yesterday, Sir Cliff Richard appeared as Heathcliff in a musical version of Jane Eyre titled appropriately Heathcliff - somehow I would think shifting the emphasis of the story, but it doesn't matter...no one liked it.

He also appeared in the audience opening night for the stage adaptation of Summer Holiday - featuring many young men in their Y-fronts. It too closed early....or earlier than planned.

Sir Cliff declares in an interview on his 60th birthday, that he is not gay, that he has been drunk exactly three times in his life, and that is one more time than he has had sex. He was in love with Olivia Newton-John, but she had recently broken up with a member of his band The Shadows, and he didn't feel like he should chase after her.....the other guy being a friend and all. And before you know it, she was engaged and married to someone else.

Oh well....Wonderful Life, indeed! And that's the on the spot Cliff Richard report for today. 8-D

Donald - When is the Arbor Day show? For that matter, when is Arbor Day?

Now I know URBAN COWBOY is a real bomb. Liz Smith raved about it.

Isn't "Summer Holiday" an MGMusical version of AH WILDERNESS (years before TAKE ME ALONG) starring Mickey Rooney, Frank Morgan, Gloria DeHaven and Marilyn Maxwell with a Harry Warren score?

Yes, its true - Bill....two movies with the same title.

Key Lime Cheesecake!

Happy Birthday, Ann.

I watched two DVDs yesterday. The first was just not as wonderufl as it ought to have been. No, "The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" should have been totally wonderful (with Maggie Smith as a dead ringer for what Susan Sarandon ought to be like in 20 years...if she doesn't bloat herself into oblivion, that is). Instead it was alternately depressing and amusing.

Apparently, the writer/filmmakers felt that a woman's shame at having a breakdown and her unwillingness to discuss it with her oldest, emotionally haunted, daughter was fodder for a deeply moving film. It wasn't. Again, sadly.

The other film on DVD is a much more joyous examination of life and it's ups and downs.

Michael Ritchie's much-abused, gorgeously filmed, scored and sung "The Fantasticks" shines and shines and shines. Jonathan Tunick took this piano/harp/percussion-based score and enhanced it for glorious orchestra and it's overhwhelmingly beautiful.

Today, I'm sick. Not an allergy attack. No. It's a cold. The onset of a cold. The held-at-bay-but-stubbornly unyielding sore-throat-variety cold. My sinuses want to flow, but I've "Zicam'ed" em into senselessness. In place of the flowing, there is a thrumming loggerjam...a combination of sinuses wanting to flow and a dam of sorts...yet I can breathe.

Drat!

Chills and fever alternate, too.

Dang!

What am I doing at work!

Dollop!

What a whizzbang!

Happy Birthday, Dear Ann!

Dessert, hmm? It's something I rarely have. I surely did enjoy Kerry's Oreo cake last summer. I also enjoy the rare piece of pie or any other sweet that I indulge in infrequently.

Simple gal that I am, I'm easily satisfied with a single-serving bag of M&Ms. You know the one I mean -- the one-pound bag.

Posted by Laura @ 03/31/2003 09:43 AM PST

Many happy returns, Ann. :)

Jrand: I posted this earlier, but it's now in the archives; who made her final screen appearance in Tickle Me? The film is absolutely dreadful. And I like some Elvis films: Blue Hawaii, Viva Las Vegas, Girls, Girls, Girls! amongst others. But Tickle Me is dire.

Cake or dessert: I do NOT need to be thinking about this. I suppose I would go to Jaxson's in Davie, Florida. The best ice-cream parlor in the world. It's a funky little operation, in business since the early '50s (the Stone Age in South Florida), still privately owned by the same guy who started it. My favorite item there is the Old-Fashioned Banana Split. Three huge scoops of any flavor of ice-cream (they have around 40 different flavors available...all homemade) -- I typically like the combination of Rum Raisin, Cappuccino and Chocolate Mint -- , pineapple and strawberry topping, whipped cream and a maraschino cherry on top. Mmmmmmmmm...how many more hours 'til I'm out of work? ;)

Happy Birthday Ann!!

I'm having a very typical
Monday today. The cafeteria
was out of Cherry Coke, my
egg salad sandwich had
eggshells in it, that loser from
my history class was following
me around telling me about
his hangover, and all the
computers in the library were
taken, so I'm stuck in the
Writing Center using the
Amazing Crashing Macintosh.

As always, if I could have any
dessert, it would have to be a
Krispy Kreme chocolate iced
creme filled doughnut. Or
maybe some of that Jello
No-Bake peanut butter
dessert.

Oh, I'm hoping that they do
There's a bowl to hold my poo

Oh there's the place where toilet seats are clean and free of mold
If we're lucky there'll be heat
Warming up the toilet seat
And the toilet paper supple and absorbent, soft enough to make my butt feel good and never cause me hemorrhoids and

Arbor day is April 25. I hope Donald does the show the week after Arbor Day instead of before - I'll be out of town on the week of Arbor Day and don't want to miss the show!

Posted by dlevy @ 03/31/2003 10:06 AM PST

not sure when the Arbor Day show will air, but I suspect it will be loaded on Sunday the 20th (don't worry David, I can always send you a CD copy)

here's a funny story from this morning....I got an email from a reporter at Newsday who is doing a story on the success of Jet Blue....apparently, he did a search for the phrase "I love Jet Blue" and found a post of mine right here at HainesHisWay!.....so, he called me and interviewed me for the article since I'm a devoted fan of Jet Blue and use them for all my New York flights....I did mention the website as well as my musical "Flyer," but I don't know how much will end up in the final article, which will be in next Monday's edition (and online as well)

Lulu - I don't like Tickle Me either - but Miss Allison Hayes is there... I do like the music in Paradise Hawaiian Style...but most Elvis movies....nope.

Happy Happy Birtday Ann!!!

Hmmm, what kind of dessert would I have? Such difficult choices. A good carrot cake is always wonderful. Something with chocolate in it, a chocolate mousse, perhaps. I also love the idea of an old-fashioned Banana Split. I think I would have chocolate ice cream, butter pecan and I don't know what for the third, depends on what the Parlor is offering. I gotta stop this. I'm getting hungry and I already had lunch.

Posted by Ben @ 03/31/2003 10:26 AM PST

Why, Ann, you sly one...you didn't say a word last night.

Happy Birthday!

Posted by Dave @ 03/31/2003 10:38 AM PST

Dave---
Ann (the future Mrs. BK) did mention her birthday in chat at least once and I think twice. Things were going so fast for a while that it was easy enough to miss. That's why the occasional lull is good. It gives you time to catch up.

Posted by William E. Lurie @ 03/31/2003 10:49 AM PST

Just thought I'd share this -- I had a Louis Jourdan Film Festival Friday night. Well, a double feature, anyway. First we watched a Columbo that featured Louis as a gourmet chef (and for my next dish...MURDER!), then The Hubby left the TV to me while I watched "Julie," which I had taped that morning.

Jrand, you're right...those voiceovers absolutely make the film! My favorites were: "I had the chilling sensation of being watched by Lyle. It was ominous. It was strangely disturbing" and "All at once I had the chilling urge to get out of the house...and get out of it FAST!!" (yes, she used the word "chilling" and the phrase "strangely disturbing" twice in separate voiceovers. "A" for originality to whoever wrote it!). The weird thing is that "Julie" is really like two movies, in that there is the first part from Doris's POV, with the voiceovers...then the abrupt shift to a less claustrophobic viewpoint, with no voiceover for the last 30-40 minutes of the film. Oh, I also loved Doris singing the sunny theme song over the opening credits as her character is running away from her murderously, pathologically jealous husband. Cognitive dissonance aplenty!

When are Ann and BK tying the knot? Are you sure you're not confusing BK with Guy...isn't he engaged to a woman named Ann?

Posted by Lulu @ 03/31/2003 10:56 AM PST

Okay it is not right to talk about food AGAIN. You guys made me go to bed so hungry last night. I think I must have dreamed about poutine and cheese sticks.

If I could have one dessert right now ... do I have to pick only one? I'm in the mood for grasshopper pie.

Jennifer

Posted by Jennifer @ 03/31/2003 11:08 AM PST

Grasshopper pie? Sounds icky. Is your favorite kind of chocolate sweet Anthrax Ripple? :)

Posted by Lulu @ 03/31/2003 11:18 AM PST

My favorite dessert is profiteroles. Lighter than air puff pastry filled with natural vanilla ice cream, warm chocolate sauce drizzled all over. Yummers!

Posted by Jay @ 03/31/2003 11:26 AM PST

I am still partial to Carvel Ice Cream Cakes with the chocolate crunchies in the middle!

Posted by Craig @ 03/31/2003 11:27 AM PST

Ice cream?

In profiteroles?

Heaven forfend!

They should be filled with the same filling used in eclairs...a custard-like filling, and then iced with chocolate.

The alternate recipe of profiterole pastry and ingredients for a hot fudge sundae does sound nice, though!

: )

Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 03/31/2003 11:38 AM PST

No, Lulu. BK is marrying Ann. Since Guy never joins chat it is definitely BK who calls her my future wife and constantly asks for reassurance that she loves him (she does).

Join us sometime in chat and you'll see.

Posted by William E. Lurie @ 03/31/2003 11:47 AM PST

Hey, grasshopper pie does not have grasshoppers in it :)

It is delicious. It is a mint flavored dessert with a chocolate cookie (like oreo) type crust). I've had it made with chocolate mint chip ice cream, or with a mint flavored creamy filling.

It is so good!

Posted by Jennifer @ 03/31/2003 12:00 PM PST

OMG I forgot about grasshopper pie...which should be served in honor of THE BEGINNING OF THE END!! Lulu, it is indeed a great tasting treat....

What a great bunch of desserts we have on the table.

I hope someone brings the Chi-nets!

Posted by Jrand52 @ 03/31/2003 12:13 PM PST

WEL: Oh, my goodness. I certainly am glad that I have only participated in one chat thus far. That scenario sounds ooey-gooey, and my dentist has cautioned me to avoid excess sugar.

Congrats and felicitations to Ann and BK, though. That silly li'l 30-year age gap will shrink to *nothing* when you're 60 and 90. You'll see.

Posted by Lulu @ 03/31/2003 12:17 PM PST

Jrand: Hey, not Chinet...we have to bring Coronet. Remember Rosemary Clooney singing "Extra value is what you get, when you buy Coronet!"??

Posted by Lulu @ 03/31/2003 12:19 PM PST

Lulu---
That's the only ooey-gooey part of chat. The rest is more mature and more interesting. Last night we prepared dinner and talked about various DVDs.

When asked "when" the knot would be tied, BK responde "on the 12th of never."

That's the scoop.

Bon Fete, Ann!

Hot fudge sundae made with coffee and moka ice cream. The Hot fudge must be on the top and bottom of the ice cream. Real whipped cream with chocolate sprikles and crushed nuts. (no cherry. hate them)

Posted by Jrand52 @ 03/31/2003 01:53 PM PST

Dessert? Did someone say dessert?

For me, and I've mentioned this one before... The Flourless Chocolate Waffle (with a scoop of chocalate ganache folded inside of it) served with Macadamia Nut Brittle Ice Cream from the Carlyle Grand Cafe (and the other restaurants in their "group"). Alas, they serve it now with Vanilla Ice Cream (ah, a Bock & Harnick reference), but I long for those days of the macadamia nut brittle ice cream.

Donald: Do I smell free trips? Upgrades? Free companion tickets? ;-)

Oh, I did treat myself to my weekly big scoop of ice cream yesterday from the little mom & pop shop near me. Yesterday's flavor: Malted Coffee Stout. Quite delicious! Reminded me of the Jeremy's Micro-Batch flavor with beer in it too.

-And I just got in from my run - boy was it chilly and windy out there!

Happy Birthday, Ann!

Since I have a SERIOUS sugar addiction, there isn't any dessert that I wouldn't absolutely love. However, if I'm going to make it, I have to make a peanut butter cake with chocolate icing. It's like eating a Reece's peanut butter cup in cake form. I get more requests for that cake than anything else I bake.

Got my Judy Garland Show Volume 7 in the mail today, and watched/listened (including producer Gary Smith's running commentary.) Is it just my DVD player, or did the image go all soft after a song or two in the concert show (#23)? The Darin-Newhart Show (#14) was sharp as a razor.

Indeed yes Lulu. Sometimes used as wedding cake in France. Maybe appropriate if Ann has to wait for the 12th of Never. At least she can have her cake and eat it too.

Is is true that Elton John is writing the music for "Billy Elliot"? Who is writing the lyrics?

I am curious as to how you are celebrating the big two-two. Or would that be the big "tu-tu", in which case you'd be celebrating with Lara Flynn Boyle?

I would have to second Bill's choice. His homemade cheesecake is absolutely fabulous! But then, there are also his homemade chocolate chip cookies, homemade waffle cookies, pineapple upside down cake (is it any wonder I love this man?).

What faboo desserts - my mouth is indeed watering (no mean feat). Here is a story: I ran into my cousin in the post office. I, as always, asked how my Aunt Bella is (cousin is married to Aunt Bella's son) and I was informed she'd passed away in late January. What's wrong with this picture? Apparently, she deemed it necessary to inform everyone but me. When I asked her why, she told me that I really hadn't visited her since she moved into a nursing home nearby (four months ago). I reminded her that I'd had several conversations with both she and her husband about Aunt Bella, and I was told she didn't really want company. I was positively shaking with anger and I had to walk away. I mean, in what kind of universe do these people live when they don't tell me that my father's sister, whom I adored, had died? Well, a pox on them, I say. Even my ex-wife had the courtesy to let me know that her father had passed on, even though I hadn't seen him for twenty years. Feh, I say, and feh I say again.

I think we need a few more desserts, don't you? I'm so in the mood to be a bad boy and go partake in a dessert or three.

Thank you for your kind words. I sent the cousin a rather pointed e-mail which I know she read, but of course, there has been no response, nor will there be, I'm sure. They'd better hope they don't see me around the neighborhood, that's all I have to say (they live three blocks from me).

Just read that Tony and Emmy winning actor Michael Jeter died in LA over the weekend at the age of 50. Not sure what the cause was but he was HIV positive.

Happy Birthday to Ann. The Oreo cake that Dear reader laura mentioned is a favorite dessert. Despite my passion for cake, you know what dessert I'm lusting after right now? Of all thngs, a root beer float. It would have to be made with Haagen-Dasz vanilla ice cream and A & W root beer. In days of yore it had to be baskin Robbins' French Vanilla ice cream and their own brand of root beer. Baskin Robbins later changed their root beer to Fanta, and it was never the same.

That's really smeggy about your aunt, BK. So sorry.

I share my birthday with that tall guy from the Drew Carey Show.

Oh, sorry to hear about your aunt, bk, and sorry to read this about Michael Jeter. He was SO wonderful in GRAND HOTEL. Seeing that show soon after he won his Tony was also the first time I saw the fabulous Brent Barrett, so I have many fond memories of that experience. Even with his awards, Michael was an underrated actor, I think.

Sorry to hear about your loss, BK. Family, eh?

More desserts? Hmm, Sandra makes really good chocolate chocolate chip brownies. And my mom makes good Chocolate chip cookies. Ice cream, of course. I'm very simple and easily pleased. I don't need fancy things.

I'm so sorry I forgot: Happy Birthday, Ann! My own daughter is also 22, great age to be!

Dear Michael: Amazing list for January 31st birthdays...and that's a fun thread of conversation.

Dear BK: My condolences on the passing of your Aunt; that JFGT (Jewish Family Guilt Trip) can be quite nasty.

Oh, WOW!!! Jrand - When I read your post about who you share your birthday with, I thought the list looked familiar... Well, as it turns out, I'm an August 26-er too! Woo-hoo!

-Don't you remember when August 26th used to be Women's Liberation Day? It was always kind of a joke in my family. I'm the oldest of four boys, and each of my brothers was born on a famous day or holiday. Don was born almost to the hour and minute that the first man landed on the moon. Michael is a Halloween baby, and Jay is a New Year's Baby. And then there's me...

So, first we both work on productions of South Pacific, then we share the same birthday.

Oooh! What a day that will be here on HHW!

A friend of mine (Jeff), my sister (Diane) and her ex-mother-in-law (also Diane) all have their birthdays on September 27th. Jeff has always said that being born around the end of September makes you a New Year's Eve Baby! ;-)

Very good, Jose! Yes, on the calendar on our birthday it used to always say...Women's Suffrage. the amendment giving women the right to vote was passed on our birthday in (I think) 1920.

Very sad to hear about Michael Jeter and about BK's aunt.

Decca will be releasing Fade Out Fade In, the Carol Burnett musical on May 20th, according to Playbill On-Line

Bruce,
Sorry about your aunt. Sorrier about the way you were treated. Family--Oy!

Posted by Kerry @ 04/01/2003 05:08 AM PST

So sorry to hear about your aunt, BK. I can only imagine what a shock it must have been for you to receive the long-delayed news in that fashion.

I share a birthday with Frank Lloyd Wright and Joan Rivers. What a combo! ;)

Oh, my ears and whiskers! I just checked out the link Ray provided, and found that I also share my birthday with Robert Preston. :) Thanks, Ray!

Just checked out my birthday, April 16 (thanks, Ray, for that site!) - I have a whole host of people as well: Charlie Chaplin, Kingsley Amis, Henry Mancini, Gerry Rafferty, Peter Ustinov, Dusty Springfield, Spike Milligan, Bobby Vinton,

and ... er ... Little Jimmie Osmond.

Once again HHW scoops the New York Times. They had no Michael Jeeter obit. The Times always used to be the source for this info, but more and more people of note are either ignored (Virginia O'Brien, Claibe Richardson) or reported weeks later (Susan Johnson). I thought with both a Tony and an Emmy they would have had something about Michael Jeeter but the only Jeeter in today's paper was a baseball player who got hurt.

By the way, has anyone heard if they have determined cause of death for Lynne Thigpen yet?

Posted by William E. Lurie @ 04/01/2003 06:09 AM PST

It is quite a shock to sit in a movie theater and see Lynn Thigpen on the screen in the trailer for ANGER MANAGEMENT. It's happened to me a couple of times and it always makes me jump.

Posted by Jand52 @ 04/01/2003 06:17 AM PST

According to some posts on a board connected to Lynne Thigpen's filmography at imdb.com, she died of a heart attack.

Posted by Lulu @ 04/01/2003 06:54 AM PST

OK, more details. This was posted to Lynne's imdb.com entry by someone who claims to be a friend of the family:

The cause of Lynne's death was a heart attack. Her boyfriend stated that she complained of neck pains earlier in the evening. She passed away Thursday morning at about 4:00am (CST).

Very sad. :(

Posted by Lulu @ 04/01/2003 06:58 AM PST

Thanks Lulu. Every obit said cause unknown.

I knew Lynne years ago before she became famous and she was every bit as nice a person as you would imagine. There is a short but very well written tribute to her in the TV Guide that came out yesterday.

It's just a shame that her last movie ("Anger Management") looks so awful. I do hope they add a title card dedicating it to her.

A compuserve news article states "Sesame Street Actor Dies" and refers to Michael Jeter as "The Other Mr. Noodle."
