Posted by ore Scola’s films, I like several Mario Monicelli films (especially Big Deal on Madonna Street), and I’m rather fond of the genre directors Mario Bava and Riccardo Freda.
Sigerson Holmes has several questions: How do I feel about gefilte fish – I’ve already answered this question, but right about now I’d like to hurl some at the constant sawers. Am I a horse radish guy or a tiny symbolic carrot guy? Horse radish all the way. Where do I stand on the parsley issue? Nowhere near it – I do not like parsley. What about people who are observing the Eileen and Chet Atkins Diet, what can they eat? Lots. Chopped liver is fine, chicken, brisket of beef. I managed to get through the seder meal having virtually almost no carbs.
And there you have it, dear readers. I am through answering the questions and yet the constant sawing goes on. And on. And on.
Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must get in my automobile and get myself away from the sound of sawing. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your DVD/video and CD players. I’ll start – CD, Jerry Goldsmith’s soundtrack to Magic, and Joe Hisaishi’s soundtrack to Kiki’s Delivery Service, both wonderful. DVD, The Beatles Anthology, which I’m working my way through slowly (best in small doses), and later another Miyazaki movie. Your turn.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to HALEY MILLS!!!
Just had to get that out - let's P-A-R-T-Y!!

VCR -" Lady and the Tramp", which I put on before and after the Seder last night to keep my wife's grand-nieces entertained, which it did.

Hayley Mills - Happy Birthday! "Let's get together, yea yea yea."
In my CD player Mavis Rivers - a twofer of her Capital albums. She does the best ever "Five O'CLock Whistle" which a great arrangment as well!
In my VCR THE HAPPIEST MILLIONAIRE. Widescreen - roadshow version. Since I couldn't get the DVD, I got the video. It is much better than I remembered. And the songs and dances are very good. I especially like "Keep Your Guard Up" and "Bye Yum Pum Pum." John Davidson and Lesley Ann Warren are impossibly young and look so good together. The dance numbers go ON FOREVER! But that's okay. This may turn out to be one of my favorite S/S score.
In my DVD player: SKI PARTY. Dwayne Hickman is very funny. Not as funny as he was in CAT BALLOU, but funny enough!
Rehearsal tonight and then two days off! Lt Cable and Liat tried on their costumes last night, very nice!
Thanks for pointing out the syndrome to me Mr BK. Perhaps we could find a cure. CHILLER!!! Too bad those types of shows never come to Indianapolis. Two or three of us would show up. That is if there was no NASCAR race, tractor pull, or Monster Truck rally on the same day.

DVD - MAN OF THE CENTURY - An independent film that is one of my favorites from the 90s. It stars Susan Eagan, Bobby Short, Anthony Rapp and a bunch of other New York based actors and involves a man stuck in the 1920s living in the 1990s. It barely played in theatres (one week in NY at one theatre) but is worth watching for a number of reasons. Thanks Image Entertainment for making it available.
VHS - Last night's MTV Documentary on the gay high school in Texas. What a freak show. These are not gays in the normal sense, but total outcasts... pre-op transexuals, a 15-year-old with HIV is caught in the men's room spreading the disease to a 13-year-old, a woman with at least 2 dozen piercings in her face, etc. I'm sure this won't win any Gay Media awards.
CD - A CD lens cleaner disc since things have been skipping lately.
Good Friday, all.

VCR: A tape of my all-time favorite show, "Richard Simmons: Dream Maker." There's an episode where he gives brand spanking-new uniforms to an entire troop of Girl Scouts, and another one where he sends a single mother and her little girl to Florida so they can attend a taping of the little girl's favorite Nickelodeon show. Awwwwwwwww...
CD player: Pat Boone's "In a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy." Pat's rendition of "Smoke on the Water" is brilliant, but his "The Wind Cries Mary" is positively sublime.
DVD player: "Dusty's Trail" -- the first-season Collector's Edition box set, with commentary by Bob Denver and Forrest Tucker, and a making-of documentary containing exclusive interviews with Sherwood Schwartz and Lori "Petticoat Junction" Sanders.

In the CD player in my car:
STRITCH (not the recording of her current AT LIBERTY, but rather a somewhat campy recording from, judging by the arrangements, the sixties. It does include a killer rendition of "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow," though.)
MACK AND MABEL (OBC recording)
Audra MacDonald's HAPPY SONGS
THE PRODUCERS (OBC recording)
The soundtrack from SLIDING DOORS (on loan from a colleague.)
Rod Stewart's IT HAD TO BE YOU (also on loan, from a different colleague. Haven't listened to it yet, but morbid curiosity will lead me to do so at some point over the weekend.)

VHS - Tapes of and for Six Feet Under and Queer As Folk
DVD - Nothing currently in it, but LOTS right by it. I'm on "vacation" starting next Monday (after Hair closes) for a few weeks, and I plan on doing a lot of catching up. -Or at least taking some of them out of the plastic!
CD - Well, nothing in the house, but in the car: Beauty & the Beast, Hairspray (what a great CD for driving, great energy), L'il Abner, and Thoroughly Modern Millie OBC.
And for Jrand: Christianne played Babe in The Pajama Game. You can check out some production info and stills on centerstage.org. *Strangely enough, the musical director isn't listed. -It wasn't me, but still...
And one more for Jrand: I did notice a "beauDy" when the whole ensemble sang at the end. But, otherwise, I think I heard "t's", of course, my keyboard part was keeping me "distracted".
Oh, and one more for Jrand: The history of New Harmony is quite colorful. If I remember correctly, there were two attempts to establish a utopian society there. Both ending in very unfortunate circumstances. If you click on my name, you can find a link to the theatre, and then a few more links to "Historic New Harmony". But it really is a beautiful place - even in the southwestern Indiana summer heat. OH!!! Maybe you'd know what crop grows around there besides all the corn. Is it soybeans? Sorghum? -It's something kind of bushy and about waist high.
Oh, and, BK, what exactly is the meaning of "inufferable"?
Oh, and yet one more for Jrand - You'd be surprised at how IDKAATSOSSCISHBS can show up in places like Chicago, DC, New York... And sometimes it affects older people as well. Even older people with "bios".

Jay, Passover Matzos is extremely dry and tasteless compared to regular Matzos. That is why it only taste good at the Seder. It needs all the extra foods on top to be eatable.
Bruce, as annoying as it is, at least the sawing isn't inside your house. We have renovated multiple homes. All horrible experiences. Finishing a house tended to be a curse as well. Completing a home tended to coincide with a job transfer.
I have exciting news. Our youngest son will be going to Rumania with the Peace Corps. Originally he was to go to China but they cancelled it for some reason.

Jay, I have that Stritch CD also. I saw the LP version in Footlight and notice that some of them (there was more than one copy) had a track of Civilization (Bongo Bongo Bongo, I Don't Want to Leave the Congo) on it but that track didn't make it to the CD.
At work: I'm in a radio mood lately, so I'm still listening to the BBC, various and sundried shows of music and entertainment.
CD at Home: The Gershwins in Hollywood, a Rhino/Turner release of various tracks from movies w/numbers by those Gershwin boys.
VCR: Jennifer (and others) like Trading Spaces but I'm a Surprise by Design fan. Robert Verdi and Rebecca Cole on Discovery Channel (18 on Time-Warner Cable from 12 noon to 2pm, two one hour shows). I go home for lunch (lucky me, I live half a block from my office), eat lunch and watch the first SBD at noon and then tape the second one from 1-2 and we (Anthony and I) watch them later that night or during the week.
The DVD is a drive in the computer and there is nothing in there right now. A local electronics store is going out of business (The Wiz) and I went in every so often to see if they had any good deals on full DVD players but I haven't gotten anything yet. I'll bite the bullet soon and get one.

In the CD player - the new version of 'Les Demoiselles de Rochefort' - only played once, but on first hearing a bit of a disappointment. The first track almost made me stop the CD after 30 seconds - think what Queen Latifah and L'il Kim did to 'Cell Block Tango' and that's what they've done to 'Chansons Des Jumelles' - I was expecting Eminem to come in with a rap at some point. Luckily, there is a 'straight' version later on. The rest of it is so-so - mostly turned into Europop, because it seems (sorry Francois) that's what French audiences want. For instance, the first verse of 'Chanson de Maxence' is fine, with a nice orchestration, but then the rhythm track comes in and ruins it. Anyway, I'll give it a few more chances - it may grow on me.
In the DVD player - the first series of Tales of the City - sublime.

VCR: At the ready for tonight's viewing is THAT FORSYTE WOMAN. Made in 1949, the cast includes Greer Garson, Errol Flynn, Walter Pidgeon, Robert Young, a young Janet Leigh, and the familiar supporting players from the MGM repertory group. I'm curious to see how this film compares to the latest version which recently aired on PBS (which I thought was excellent).
ALSO, I will probably watch (for the umpteenth time) THE BARKLEYS OF BROADWAY. I think this is one of Fred and Ginger's best films. Their acting is superb and their dancing (especially Ginger's) is sublime. Of course most of you probably know that this was their last film together after a long hiatus in which they had gone their separate ways. Judy Garland was originally cast but dropped out due to illness. The script by Comden & Green, the score by Harry Warren & Ira Gershwin, the costumes, the choreography by Robert Alton, and the direction by Charles Walters are all first class. Even Oscar Levant is good! And contrary to most critics' opinions, I thought Ginger's Sarah Bernhardt recitation was just fine.
P.S. Click on my name to read The Kitchenettes take on cabaret then click on the word "Calendar" at the bottom to see what's the latest in West Coast Cabaret.

I just wanted to wish everyone a very Good Friday, as well as a great Easter weekend.
One question, though, concerning "Good" Friday. Since it commemorates the death of JC on the cross, wouldn't it be more apropriate to call it "Solemn" Friday, or even "Holy? Friday?

THE EASTER BUNNY
A man was blissfully driving along the highway when he saw the Easter Bunny hopping across the middle of the road. He swerved to avoid hitting the bunny, but unfortunately the rabbit jumped in front of his car and was hit. The basket of eggs went flying all over the place, and there was candy everywhere. The driver, being a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulled over to the side of the road and got out to see what had become of the bunny carrying the basket. Much to his dismay, the colorful bunny was dead. The driver felt guilty and began to cry.
A blonde driving down the same highway saw the man crying by the side of the road and pulled over. She stepped out of her car and asked the man what was wrong.
"I feel just terrible," he explained. "I accidentally hit the Easter Bunny and killed him. There may not be an Easter because of me. What should I do?"
The blonde told the man not to worry. She knew exactly what to do. She went to her car trunk, and pulled out a spray can. She walked over to the limp, dead bunny, and sprayed the entire contents of the can over the little animal. Miraculously the Easter Bunny came back to life, jumped up, picked up the spilled eggs and candy, waved its paw at the two humans and hopped on down the road. Fifty yards away, the Easter Bunny stopped, turned around, waved and hopped on down the road for another fifty yards, turned, waved, hopped another fifty yards, turned and waved again!
The man was astonished. He said to the woman, "What in heaven's name is in your spray can?"
The blonde turned the can around so that the man could read the label. It said, "Hair Spray. Restores life to dead hair. Adds permanent wave."
HAPPY EASTER!

DVD "The Bank" with Anthony Lapaglia. Good low budget movie made here in Melbourne Australia.
RECORD PLAYER. Too early in the day yet but yesterday I played the first Ringo Starr album "Sentimental Journey". So he is no singer but it is far better than the Rod Stewart Current release (as is Robbie Willams' and the one a couple of years back by George Michael).
Also played for the first time in a few decades the OLC of "Treasure Island" (with Spike Milligan as Benn Gunn). I saw the show in London in 1976 at the New London before "Cats" took up residence there. I also saw "Grease" at that theatre with Richard Gere in the lead.
I also played the special "Chicago" mini Cd/DVd release yesterday.
Why don't I play CDs in my DVD player today? Too dumb to think of that I guess!

My ever-lovin' der Brucer and I purchased a plethora of DVDs recently. We've added to our collection Miyazaki's Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, West Side Story...oops, that reads like Miyazaki did an animated WSS, didn't it! Come to think of it, that's not such a bad idea!
Well, along with all the other additions are the first collection of DVDs from the American Film Theater, which tried to bring good theater to film in the mid 70s. The current batch includes The Iceman Cometh, Butley, Rhinoceros, The Maids, and Luther. So far, I'm still trying to take in all the bonus materials, which are plentiful. Facinating, all the same!

To address the issue of "Good
Friday", I learned today at our
eccumenical service that we call
today "Good Friday" because while
Christ was crucified on this day, he
died to save us and our sins, so that
makes if good. That's it in a nutshell.
But until today, I never thought about
it, now we know.

Ben: What exactly is Surprise by Design? I've never heard of it. I need to see if I get the Discovery channel.
Btw, my sister was over the other day. I had given her a Trading Spaces t-shirt for her birthday last month. And apparently everyone she sees loves it. But we had a small fight. Cause she was saying how she loved the show more than me. IF she read these notes she might realize she is wrong :)
Also, speaking of gefilte fish. Since it is Passover, the store I shop it was sold out of it. Can you imagine, sold out of gefilte fish :(
Double also, i misread a circular (Canadian tire). I just got a new bike (pre-birthday gift) and I needed some bike accessories. The circular says the sale is from Sunday till Friday. So I called my mom and made her go shopping with me. But as we were driving I stopped the car and said "something is wrong, the circular cannot be from sunday to friday". And sure enough in french it said "sunday to saturday" and in english it had the incorrect day! I felt so dumb.
Okay enough sharing. BK are you happy now? Very long post!
Posted by Jennifer @ 04/18/2003 05:20 PM PST
My Google searching about
Good Friday is summed up by
the following explanation:
"Good Friday
The Friday before Easter is
called Good Friday, and is a
somber observance of Christ's
crucifixion on the cross.
Christians believe that the
death of Jesus Christ on the
cross made it possible for
them to know peace with God.
They wanted to celebrate their
peace rather than observe
Friday as a day of mourning or
sadness.
The name may also be
derived from God's Day, since
in the first two centuries, the
word "good" would only ever
have been used as a
description for God. The
Saxons and Danes called this
day Long Friday, and Good
Friday in Danish is
Langfreday.

Hi there.... I listened to 2 CDs today; first, an audition CD from a talented young guy in Indiana (who is familiar with the show and does know the songs), and then a wonderful re-release of great old vintage recordings of Ethel Smith.
No DVD, but the VHS was a terrific compilation of music numbers by Dinah Shore and various guests, including Groucho Marx doing "Peensie-Weensie." Talk about high art!
It was also great to break some figurative bread (non-carb) with the esteemed BK himself in the glamorous Hills of Beverly a few days ago. What a fun evening with a truly fine and talented man.
How could I have gotten through all these years being deprived of ham chunks and a pointy party hat??!

In my VCR: "Quantum Leap" with Michelle Pawk, John Cullum and Janine Turner (the episode when Sam leaps into an actor understudying John Cullum in "Man of La Mancha." I got it off of eBay for only 59¢ (but then there was $4.95 shipping)!
In my DVD player: Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Masterpiece," the concert recorded live in China. Except that it doesn't play at all. I put the disc in the player and it just pops right back out. Fortunately, it's a library copy and can get another copy to try. We'll see it that works.

I'm old enough to have gone to that American Film Theater during its first subscription year. As I recall, you could attend separate shows or buy a season ticket for the entire series for that year. I believe Eli Landau did two seasons of these before he folded his tent. I remember being so impressed with BUTLEY and A DELICATE BALANCE because I hadn't seen either in the theater, and they both featured such wonderful actors. (Well, all of the AFT offerings had famous actors, but those are the two I remember most distinctly.) Nice that these are finally being made available to us.

The Cassidy Brothers have never really been my taste. Do however like their take on "You Could Drive a Person Crazy?

I, too, am just old enough to have seen the AFI series in its first-run, subscription only engagement. I also knew the theater managers quite well, so I ended up with all the posters for the films - - wish I knew where they were now. I also, got to see all four showings of JACQUES BREL, which only aided and abetted my love for Brel's music, and for the talented Mr. Joe Masiell. I also have the pressbook for BREL, with its faboo 8 x 10 glossies. Say what you will about the BREL film, but, it beat MTV to the punch by quite a few years.
In the dvd player: SPIRITED AWAY, KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE, STARGATE (SE), HAIR and OLD YELLER.

Jose -- yes, I seem to think I have seen Kerry a few (million) times in the past 30 years. :) The "show" and "song" reference to the audition tape I mentioned, was just that this young fellow actually does know a lot of shows and bothers to learn something before he auditions.
Finally, I wonder what the dashing and talented BK had for his post-Seder nosh this evening... I wouldn't want to mix Pounded Steak with ham chunks.

In re: Jrand's query about auditioners who come to auditions unfamiliar with the show, unprepared with a song, and asking whether they can sing Happy Birthday, I can only add that there should be a word for these people when get in a snit because they don't get cast: AMACHURLISH.

Yes, it's very late - or very early, if you prefer. Or it be just plain ole late or plain ole early depending upon which part of the globe you're in.
And what do you ask is Jose doing up at this time? Baking of course! Chocolate Chip Cookies, Butterscotch Brownies with Pecans, and Paul's Cheesecake. -I still don't know exactly who Paul is, but, apparently, he's from Dallas. (It's a recipe from Nick Malgieri's "Perfect Cakes" cookbook.) -Treats for closing night. I'll probably bake another batch of cookies and cake or two later on. But, first, I sleep.
Bon soir.
Oh, and François, Merci beaucoup, for the information on the Cassidy brothers. Duh! I should have known that. -And how exactly do you say, "Duh!", en français?

LOL - thanks for all the info, Jose. And to everyone who has been affected by the syndrome BK named. LOL
So many wonderful comments today. I love getting up early and reading what I missed!
I got my JUDY GARLAND SHOW volume 8 (the last) DVD yesterday and I will watch it today.

If anybody else here has been following the Peterson case (the 8-months-pregnant young wife who disappeared last Christmas Eve), you'll be as satisfied as I was to find out this morning that Scott has finally been arrested on two counts of murder (both Laci and the baby). He even dyed his hair and grew a beard - apparently in preparation to flee - but the good guys got 'im in time. :)
Just a week ago we were watching Columbo and I said it was too bad they didn't put Columbo on the Peterson case, as I was becoming convinced that the guy would get away with it. Thank God that didn't happen.

He may still get away with it, Lulu. It has to be proved he did it, and you never know what a jury will do (ie Simpson).

Laura, I hear you, but I think the police waited to apprehend him until they had a pretty darned airtight case against him. There was already TONS of circumstantial evidence, but I think they wanted enough hard physical evidence to make an acquittal very difficult to obtain. Hopefully, that's just what they got.
