Well, I'm about to leave and the fershluganah SUN is out. I can't believe it. One hour ago it was pouring rain, buckets of rain and now the fershluganah sun is out. I was so looking forward to the rain today - oh, well, perhaps it will come back, although it will probably stay sunny and be ninety degrees because, after all, we are in California.
Now, where in tarnation IS everyone? Let's not have one of those dreary weekends filled with the errant and truant, although we've already been warned that several dear readers will be away this weekend.

The last movie I saw in a theater was "Aladdin." Before that I saw "Beauty and the Beast."

I rarely go to the cinema nowadays (in fact I can't remember the last time I went) because I can't be doing with the other people who don't realise their actually not in their own homes and make comments all the way through, or eat noisily and slurp.
And where I live the cinemas don't often show anything you'd want to see. I just went past one of them and saw a poster for a film (I can't remember the name of it) but it had a picture of a guy with an astonished expression holding two pieces of cucumber over his nipples. That just about sums it up.

Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Wherever you are!
-This is my third time waking up today...
As for the last movie I saw in a theatre...
Ah, "Les Fils" - the Belgian flick that drove me up the wall. If I start up again, I'll probably break the record again for longest post... so, if you'd like the skinny - or the fat - just check the archives.
And before that, "Chicago" - twice.
I think that's all. -I have a friend who's a SAG/Oscar voter, so I was able to catch up on all my movies at home via her "for your consideration" copies.

Hey there...
Was that only post number 5?!?!?!!?
I guess there must be quite a sale in tarnation!

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, I'm here -- errant and truant as ever. I'm back home in California and it's cold & raining. Gee, in New York, the highs were in the 80's and the walks in the park were so lovely. Ah shucks, I miss it already! Now, back to more jet lag...

The clouds are rolling in here and promising rain by afternoon. Maybe we could all have a seance. That is a segue to mention that "Seance on a Wet Afternoon" is available on DVD. Interesting little film.
Last weekend I saw "Bowling for Columbine". If you like Michael Moore (and I do) you will really like this film. He takes on the NRA and Charlton Heston. His confrontation with Mr Heston is intense and a little unsettling. However, it is a very enjoyable film. A lot of humor and some rather shocking revelations about our government. He definitely deserved the Oscar for this one.

I am currently working on a ten page research paper on the medicinal uses of lavender. Actually, I'm reading the funnies and eating Oreos, but I'll start working on the paper sooner or later.

I just saw the film "Identity" on Thursday afternoon. Who ever thought that a MATINEE FILM would cost $10?!?! Aren't matinees supposed to be cheaper? Anywho, the movie was pretty decent...kept me guessing all the way through. I thought I had it figured out--twice!--and I was wrong on both counts. The last one before that was "A Mighty Wind," which I loved.
Since purchasing my DVD player I've started watching movies at home rather than watching them at the theater. Why pay $10 for a new release at the cinema when I can rent 4 "recently released" DVDs for $8?
I hate to admit this, but I just recently woke up. I think my body is trying to tell me that I don't sleep enough. Jose, I hope YOU'RE getting enough rest.

The last movie we saw in a theatre was CHICAGO when it first opened and before that I don't even remember it was so long. Movies are overpriced (and the food is even worse) and for this you get to sit through ads and trailers for next year's films, listen to cell phones and babies, and smell all kinds of food in addition to seeing the movie.
Lulu---
In regards to yesterday's late post, does Wal-Mart censor their DVDs like they sometimes censor their CDs by selling special pressings with "objectionable" material deleted?
Posted by William E. Lurie @ 05/03/2003 12:20 PM PST
WEL: I certainly hope not. Wouldn't they have to put some sort of warning label on the DVD so you don't accidentally purchase material that isn't objectionable? I know when I went there today, even before we left home, I said, "Today I want to purchase some objectionable material, dadgummit." Isn't that my right as an American citizen?
Last film I saw in the theater was Chicago. Ditto what Alan said. Too many people (GROWN people who should know better!) treat a movie theater like their living room. Still, I always loved going to the movies as a child, and each weekend I try try TRY to find something I really want to see...I rarely succeed. ("A Mighty Wind" is still only playing at about 16 theaters nationwide!! What is UP with that?)
Posted by Lulu @ 05/03/2003 12:57 PM PST
Sorry...for "Alan" insert "Allan."
Posted by Lulu @ 05/03/2003 12:58 PM PST
I can't bitch too much about movies here...yes, people are barbarians and the prices are quite steep, but I'm lucky enough to live in a city where we ALWAYS have the newest movies...sometimes weeks before the rest of the country does, which unfortunately is not the case for Lulu. That's a nice concession, I suppose, for New Yorkers. We certainly didn't have that privilege in Louisville. But I assure you, Lulu..."A Mighty Wind" is WELL worth the wait. You'll love it.
Posted by Jason @ 05/03/2003 01:11 PM PST
Same here. CHICAGO was the last film I saw at the theater, and at the time, it was the first I had seen there in months since MINORITY REPORT in the summer. I have a fairly elaborate home theater and just prefer to watch within the comfort of my own home. I can wait the few months it takes for the DVD versions to be released.
We had a monsoon come through here late yesterday afternoon which blew 70 mph winds and caused much damage and loss of power for around 100,000 homes. Luckily, I was spared this go-round. The ice storm we had back in November wasn't as kind. I did lose power for several days.
I guess folks are enjoying their Saturday outside and not sitting inside posting on the internet. [sigh] I prefer the inside where mosquitoes don't dwell.

Here I thought I'd find out about some NEW movies, but nooooooooooooooooooooooo. Now, where in tarnation IS everyone? How can we ever become the most popular site on all the Internet with these small weekend numbers. There was a brief time when the weekends were holding their own - perhaps we should avoid the weekends from now on.
Posted by bk @ 05/03/2003 01:30 PM PST
BK, are you suggesting we do away with the concept of weekends entirely?
As a working stiff, I denounce that idea -- quite vociferously.
Posted by Lulu @ 05/03/2003 01:32 PM PST
As I mentioned the other day,
I've only gone to the movie
theater twice in the past 18
months or so. Just not that
many movies that I consider to
be worth the price, when I can
wait a few months to see the
DVD. The upside is that when
I do deem a movie worthy of
being seen in the theater, it
most always turns out to be a
movie that I quite enjoy. The
most recent was just last
weekend, when I finally saw
The Pianist. I thought it to be a
fantastic movie, well worth the
ticket price. Before that was
Chicago, which was the first
since Moulin Rouge. When A
Mighty Wind finally makes its
way to my neck of the woods, I
will happily shell out my
money for that one.

Not much seen this year. LOTR- TTW, Potter 2 & Chicago. Hope to see the Russian film which is getting rave reviews here - all done in one take! "Russian Ark".
Will alsso try and get to see the new Spacey movie. It has just been School holidays here (2 weeks over the easter) so the movies are mostly teen comedies pitched at the lowiest level. They will thus make megabucks.

The last movie that I saw in the theater that I wanted to see was "Chicago." The last movie that I saw at all was "How To Lose a Guy In 10 Days." Ugg. My niece wanted to see it and she paid for me to go. She doesn't drive yet, even though she's 19 years old. Go figure. Anyway, I absolutely want to see "A Mighty Wind" and will do so at the first opportunity.
Otherwise I just finished watching the last disc and a half of "Sports Night." I missed the end of the series on TV and now I have seen them all. I wish there could have been some bonus material. Anything...but no. Oh well.
I have no plans for tomorrow, but Monday evening I will not be available for the chat. I'm going to a volunteer recognition event at the local performing arts center where I volunteer usher. So they're recognizing me along with the hundred or so other volunteers.
Allan, I'm glad you like the Italian Mrs. Doubtfire. I just couldn't get into "Holmes." Probably just haven't given it enough time.

Sorry to say, BK, that you won't hear about NEW movies from me. . .the last film I saw in a theater was LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, at the wonderful Oaks Theater that I've spoken of before.
Before that, the movies that I saw were: FAR FROM HEAVEN, CHICAGO and LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS.
We don't have A MIGHTY WIND, yet, but tomorrow I might step out to see X-MEN 2 - since I'm up to date on what needed to be done for Scarlet Street. . .

Still working on that research paper. Well, I'm drinking Cherry Coke and watching Julia Child on TV, but that's close enough.
The last movie I saw in a movie theater was Aladdin with my mom. But we rented Hamlet for my Literature and Film class and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. ("What exactly is the function of the rubber duck?" I can't stop laughing about that.)

Hey guys, it's me!
Well I have not been to a movie in a month or two. Sometimes I go to see lots of new movies. But nothing has interested me recently. Although that said, I expect this weekend will show huge box office numbers (between X2 and Lizzie M).
Tonight is Trading Spaces. I had the opportunity to check the book at my local Chapters today (they like you to sit on their couches and read). And it was quite good. I learned a lot of info about Paige especially. Although I wish there was more about how the show really works.
I found out that the newest batch of American Idols will be touring the US and Canada this summer (see tour on idolsonfox.com). And they will be in my city on July 23rd. I actually asked my sis and her hubby if they wanted to go. We are all addicted to that show!

A MIGHTY WIND (about which I posted my comments late yesterday) is playing in something like 27 theaters in the Los Angeles area. Combining this with Lulu's comment earlier, that the film is only showing in 16 theaters nationally, confirms what I've suspected for some time, that LaLa Land is not a part of the nation as a whole. Since AMW is also playing in seventeen theaters in New York City, the same conclusion seems obvious. The rest of the nation can now breathe easier.
Posted by S. Woody White @ 05/03/2003 05:04 PM PST
Excuse the heck outta me, S. Woody...playing in about 16 CITIES nationwide. Better? ;)
All I know is, the nearest theater showing it is at least an eight-hour drive from me.
*sigh*
Posted by Lulu @ 05/03/2003 05:59 PM PST
I will add that my last in-theatre viewing was CHICAGO as well - on the day of the Academy Awards!
I am looking forward to A MIGHTY WIND and just ordered the soundtrack for it along with the 8 WOMEN soundtrack!

Well, I had a fun and stimulating afternoon today. Someone had given me a pair of tickets to the Cookie Company Theater, which is adults performing theater for children. Since Sandra was busy with her term paper, I took a friend's seven-year-old boy for his very first live theater experience. We saw a Mexican version of Beauty and the Beast, and the beast was a very scaaaaaarrrry lizard-man.
Posted by Laura @ 05/03/2003 06:00 PM PST
And before you correct me on the exact count of the cities (which I wasn't sure of anyway, hence the use of the term "about"), AMW is playing in 13 CITIES nationally (and Toronto).

Dang, Lulu, now you're throwing my conclusions into the compost heap! And I was so proud of them! Dangedy-ding-dang!

I just viewed the DVD LES GIRLS and it is a good movie.
I saw it first on television of course on the WFBM-TV Saturday Late Movie. This is where they showed films that were either too long or too sexy to be shown on Frances Farmer's show in the afternoon.
Good transfer, widescreen, 4.0 stereo, and a nice interview with Taina Elg - or rather she sits and reads what someone else has written for her to say.
I had forgotten the RASHOMON like form of the movie. And I have to say Mitzi Gaynor (yes, Nellie Forbush the next year) really outdances Gene Kelly in their duet...a "Wild One" parody in dance. She is terrific! Her acting is still somewhat weak, but she looks great!
New movies are few and far between for me....audiences and the price keep me away.
TS Jennifer. I liked both Hildy and Kia's rooms tonight on the second hour of TS. I still don't like them, but they did okay.
Some guy from the Ayn Rand institute is speaking - Yaron Brook - on C-Span at the University of Pennsylvania. And he sounds like Elmer Fudd, I swear, at first I thought it was a Saturday Night Live sketch!

I have an unseemly confession to make. I want to see X2, the X-Men sequel. What's more, I want to see it with a bunch of teenagers filling the auditorium, fresh out of school and avoiding getting to their homework. THAT strikes me as the best way to see a flik like X2. Clearly, I need my doc to up my meds.

Oh, my goodness...what kind of Kentuckian am I? I COMPLETELY forgot that Saturday was Derby Day! My parents even mentioned it when I spoke with them, but I forgot!!
The Run for the Roses is quite the deal in Louisville...we have a month-long celebration leading up to the big day. I can't believe I forgot...

That must mean that you are officially a New Yorker now, Jason.
Posted by Laura @ 05/03/2003 10:07 PM PST
I've heard you don't become an "official" New Yorker until you've lived here for five years. I don't know where that figure came from, but there you have it.
Posted by Jason @ 05/03/2003 11:39 PM PST
Dan Fogelberg's "Run For the Roses" shall now be played in honour of those from Kentucky.

Born in the valley
And raised in the trees
Of western Kentucky
On wobbley knees,
With Mama beside you
To help you along,
You'll soon be a-growin' up strong.
All the long, lazy mornings
In pastures of green,
The sun on your withers,
The wind in your mane,
Can never prepare you for what lies ahead...
The run for the roses so red...
And its run for the roses
As fast as you can.
Your fate is delivered,
Your moment's at hand.
Its the chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance
And its high time you joined in the dance...
Its high time you joined in the dance.
From sire to sire
Its born in the blood--
The fire of a mare and the strength of it's stud.
Its breeding and its training and its something unknown
That drives you and carries you home...
And its run for the roses
As fast as you can.
Your fate is delivered,
Your moment's at hand.
Its the chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance,
And its high time you joined in the dance...
Its high time you joined in the dance.
...that just made me homesick.

Still doing that research paper. Well, I'm eating chocolate and watching Happy Days reruns, but you know how it is. I'll get to that paper eventually.

DR Sandra: Happy Days is in re-runs? When did it go off the air?
Posted by Lulu @ 05/04/2003 03:02 AM PST
I have to reply to your somments about 1776. I was, of course, theproducer of the laserdisc version.
Director Peter Hunt ws hardly one to be guided by me in his commentary. NOTHING was done without the full cooperation of Mr.Hunt. In fact, the laser release was held up for 6 months after completion should Mr. Hunt want to make any changes.
Why create and Overture and Intermission music that didn't exist. Simple. Once we finished the restoration of the unseen uncut version, the film was now a roadshow length movie and Columbia was talking about possibly making new prints in the future.
Musical director Ray Heindorf had left several memos of what he planned to use for the Overture and THAT was created following the memos. The Intermission music was created using one of the few available pieces left.
Any NEW shots that were brought in to replace ond ones(there were only five or six at the most) were shots clearly marked on both box and film Jack warner Cuts - i.e. Peter Hunt shot taken OUT of the film and replaced with Jack Warner Shots. during the time of the project, Peter Hunt never expressed anything ecept that he was thrilled withthe whole project.
Originally the plan was to letterbox the regular cut ofthe film and to remix it for stereo. The extra footage was going to be put in a bonus section at the end of the disc. But it was Mr. Hunts wish (not mine) to put all of this footage back in to the film.
What Mr. Hunt has done in the new DVD is certainly his business. However, I hate the new soundmix. I think it sounds low fi compared to the one we did for the laser, but I often find this to be true on a lot of dvd sound (Olive which sounds poor and has had sound added on the surrounds which destroys the mix in a few places). Hope this clears up a few things.
