Dear BK:
Dear Reader Jason thinks perhaps you were kidding when you said he could sing on your next CD with Judy Kaye. Were you teasing? Or will he really get to sing?

Question for BK: Why won't my allergies go away? -Is there an Meltz & Ernest song that asks the same question? -Or maybe I'm thinking Tom Lehrer.
-Although "I Know Not Why, It Simply Is" could apply I guess.
Well, if my sinuses clear up later, I'll ask another question or two...

It took me awhile to sweep up all the names that were dropped around here.
What a lovely song...it simply is.
My question for ASK BK day:
Which do you think is more important for a director in a theatrical enterprise: Preparation OR Inspiration?

Talk of The Goodbye Girl last week (or several days ago, at any rate) made me remember...weren't you up for that part? If you indeed were, I'd like to know 1)How you would have played it (your persona of the time was VERY different from the way Dreyfuss played the role...would you have played it as the quiet shy guy, or gone a different way?), 2)Who, in your opinion, should have been your co-star (in the Paula McFadden role), and 3)How well you think it would have worked.

Did anybody else see the Complicated Women documentary premiere on TCM last night? If so, what were your thoughts?
My two cents': I read the book several months ago and found it *very* interesting. The documentary had some neat film clips, but it wasn't as good as the book - mostly because it skimmed over points that the book addressed in a deeper way. For instance, you get the idea from the documentary that pre-codes are enjoyable and subversive mostly because the female stars frequently wore slinky, revealing satin dresses (sans undies) and indicated that they enjoyed sex. This is certainly part of the appeal of pre-codes for many people, but by no means is it the whole ball of wax.
I also didn't think Jane Fonda's narration really worked. Can't exactly put my finger on "why"; something about it just seemed forced. I didn't like the abrupt shifts in tone that occurred when she read quotations of old-time stars...it was like she was reading a bedtime story and trying to "do all the voices."
I had no idea until I saw this that Frances Dee is still alive! Interestingly, she seems to still be paying attention to fashion trends, as her hair (or, likely, a wig) is white as snow, but done in the shoulder-length, no-bangs flip style that is au courant. Also, I was wondering if the interview with Karen Morley in this docu was her last - didn't she just die very recently?
Posted by Lulu @ 05/07/2003 09:28 AM PST
I found it interesting as well, Lulu. But of course more limited in scope than a book could be - and the clips mostly those available to TCM. But in the framework interesting.
The credits dedicated the show to Karen Morley and listed her birth year and 2003.
Didn't think much about Jane's narration one way or the other. And I also thought Frances Dee had passed away.
Frances of course was married to Joel McCrea, a favorite in these here parts. Their son Jody was a co-star of all the "beach" films as Deadhead/Bonehead. And of course Joel starred opposite Frances Farmer in COME AND GET IT.
Frances did indeed look perky and bright. TRIVIA: Who else can remember the Frances Dee mention on an episode of I LOVE LUCY?

Question about Kritzerland since the order page is up and I just put in my order yesterday.
How do you promote a book that isn't generally sold in bookstores, other than doing interviews and sending out press releases, etc? Is most of the work on your side or does your publisher do a lot of work to make sure word gets out? Do you make sure the Kritzerland page is listed in all the major search engines? Do Amazon and Barnes & Noble on-line do any work for you in terms of publicity?
Posted by Ben @ 05/07/2003 09:55 AM PST
Jrand: Yeah, I know a 55-minute documentary would need to be more limited in scope than a book of 200+ pages; but I still felt they could have balanced out all the "sexy dames" stuff with other reasons that the pre-codes were subversive at the time and still intriguing today. I think a really important aspect of the pre-codes is that people didn't always have to receive a comeuppance at the end! And the women were liberated in other ways than just being able to get nekkid. :) Just watch Night Nurse sometime if you don't believe me. I LOVE Barbara Stanwyck's character in that - she is one heck of a dame!
I DID love that they showed a film clip from that movie...I forget the name, but they were illustrating the difference between pre-code and after. Herbert Marshall was marrying a woman who was a psychiatrist, but he didn't approve of her little hobby and insisted she must give it up in order to marry him. LaSalle had pointed out in the book that he thought the way the actress played the final scene indicated that she was intentionally bucking the "happy ending" that was forced on the film (said happy ending being that the woman finally acquiesces and declares she will no longer work once they are married. When Herbert Marshall asks what *will* she do, she responds, "You tell me." Cue swirling happy ending music, embrace, Herbert and other guy beaming). Except the actress played the scene as though she'd just been told that her best friend had died! It was one thing to have LaSalle describe this scene for us in the book -- quite another to actually *see* the scene: the deadness in her eyes, no smile, not even a hint of one, and the flat tone of her voice as she says "You tell me." I think he was absolutely right - the actress chose to interpret the lines in such a way as to blatantly put the lie to the "happy ending." That moment pretty much redeemed the docu for me. :)
Oh, and did you know that Jody McCrea appeared on To Tell the Truth? He was on there with another group of promising young thesps - they had to read entries from the phone book, each conveying different emotions/attitudes. This episode just ran on Game Show Network recently.
Posted by Lulu @ 05/07/2003 10:02 AM PST
OMG - isn't the Game Show Network fun? Wait till you see Betsy Palmer and her co-star do a song from SOUTH PACIFIC on I'VE GOT A SECRET.
Ann Harding was the actress with Herbert Marshall in that movie. She was terrific in that scene. And yup it's one thing to read about it - and another thing to see it. Nudity is subversive? What were they thinking?

For BK Day---
Regarding a recent discussion that took place on this here site earlier this week, how do you feel about certain stores who demand that record companies produce special versions of their CDs omitting certain language and possibly changing the cover art? Or for that matter video stores who edit scenes out of films to make them "family friendly"? As a filmmaker, would you be upset that a store was selling TFNM with the dancing dildos and the stunk cock scene eliminated? What if your distributor Image Entertainment agreed to these cuts just to get the film into more stores? Do you consider this a form of censorship or just greedy manufacturers going along with major retailers instead of backing their artists? I know the legality of this is currently being tested, but I'm interested in your point of view on this topic.

BTW, did you ever try typing in www.amightywind.com into your browser to see what you get? Apparently the reason the movie's site is amightywindonline.com is because amightywind.com is already registered to "Aleph & Tav Almightywind Ruach Ha Kodesh Wildfire Last Chance Ministry©."
Yes, it's "Almightywind" blah blah blah Ministry, but amightywind.com. Looks like a typo occurred when registering the domain name.

Yes, Bill, you are correct, as Sheila and Don posted above. The reason Lucy Ricardo got to be in the Charity Fashion Show was because Mrs. Joel McCrea, Frances Dee, was going to be in Europe.
And Lucy can wear a tweed suit!

The following appeared on the Film Music Monthly message board. Can anyone help?
"I just saw this fantastic revival with Antonio Banderas and a host of over 16 women, all beautiful and all with awful Italian accents (except, of course, Chita Rivera, who has an awful FRENCH accent).
"I thought the set was sterile and ugly until the second act when it made sense and became wonderful.
"I thought the musical was great, the staging a bit messy (and yet exciting as well), the acting (despite the accent) wonderful, and the evening, enchanting.
"One question: the one number that was cut from the original was "The Germans at the Spa," which always confused me on the cast album. What was that number about? How did it figure into the show?
"Anyone see the original?"
Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 05/07/2003 12:46 PM PST
Oops....it was a question about "NINE"!
Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 05/07/2003 12:47 PM PST
From what I can gather, the SPA number was the movie that the director, the main character, was trying to make.
But someone smarter than I will have to fill in the specifics.

Yes, Jrand, she can wear a tweed suit, but she looks even better in a burlap sack that Ricky passed off as a Paris Original (several years before HOW TO SUCCEED...) in one of the Europe episodes.

If it is, then it's only going to be a one hour documentary like Pennebaker's "Original Cast Album: Company" when he filmed the recording of that album (it was only hour long but they shot something like 18 hours of film). If it's not, and they're filming her WHOLE SHOW, then that would be FABULOUS!!

The Germans At the Spa were sung by the Chambermaids in act one. It is sort of like This Week Americans from Do I Hear a Waltz? I wonder why they dropped the song?
An interesting aside. Samuel French has the amateur rights and they publish an alternate version of the show were Lillian LaFleur is a man! Other roles have also switched gender. (But not the roles of Luisa [the wife] Claudia [actress and former Mistress] or Clara [current Mistress] so there is no gay angle to the "male version"

Buckets of humble and abject apologies for 4 days (that's four) of blatant errancy and truancy......As I explained earlier, I had some rehearsal in Philadelphia and then a small performance in Allentown, Pa.
I read through the past notes that I missed while I was gone.....MY, some of the kids got quite pesky and whipsnappery, but all seems back to normal. You don't want to make June have to call Ward in here to deal with you, now do you??!?!
Hi DR Jose -- you take care of those sinuses....I recommend either rugulach or a good bundt cake.
Hi DR Laura -- don't let the slugs of the world drag you down...just grab a little of DR Sandra's chocolate anything.
Hi DR Hapgood -- I read your post about what all went on with your interview about your GSA group at your school, and we send a great big hug to you for standing up for yourself!! I recommend buying yourself a new shirt, and a date with the star of the swim team!
And to Dear esteemed, suave, erudite, and sartorial BK..... DR Kerry already ordered our TWO copies of Kritzerland,,YEA!! We await the arrival of the new tome with baited breath and a light heart.
Ask BK -- When you are thinking of the backing and arrangement to go behind a vocal selection, and you are working with one of the fine arranger/orchestrator persons that you have used in the past, how do you get across your ideas, as far as specific instruments and/or instrumental effects? I got the impression from visiting with you that you didn't necessarily have a "written music" background, but maybe I was wrong. In other words, do you specify where you want a specific harmony, chord, or instrumental color used? Do you work out a rough outline with maybe a melody line and chord symbols at the piano first on your own? I hope that's not too technical and boring....but I'm curious (yellow), and inquiring minds want to know.??

I'll write you more if you want to hear

Seriously, though, thanks for your
support. It is so nice to go places
these days that are not the high
school social system. Even if I float
somewhat free of it, it still bothers
me. And having friends like all of the
dear readers here is really
wonderful. Wow, that was sincere.
Oh, something else to be proud of,
DR MusicGuy: yesterday I went and
stood by the polls collecting
signatures for a petition to put a
domestic partner registry on the
ballot. I felt like such a firebrand
activist. And the vast majority of
people asked were nice, and
probably 3/4 signed. I'm pleased to
have done my part.
Bruce:
1) Have you ever seen
"Long...Night"? Who was in it, and
what did you think?
2) Are there other O'Neill plays that
you are familiar with? What do you
think of any of them?
3) Are there any credits that you try
to leave off of your resume? Any
"adult" films that you really don't
want JB aka JK to find out about?
Come on, you can tell the dear
readers....
4) Any Tony predictions? (Perhaps
that should be a category of
discussion sometime soon?)
5) Have you any familiarity with the
works of Brian Friel? If so, whaddya
think?

DR Hapgood: Hooray to you for petitioning for Domestic Partnership. May you and the captain of the swim team be the first to register :-) My Ant and I registered in November (I mentioned it last year) after 7 years together. We didn't get the big, splashy coverage that Tony Kushner got in the Times Style section this past Sunday but we're not A list boys, just B+.
Saw Nine last night and Ron's posting of someone's thoughts are pretty accurate. I saw the original (more than once) and loved it. Karen Akers, Lilliane Montevecchi (sp) and Anita Morris all stand out as great but there was some wonderful stuff here also. The comment about the set, now that I've seen the show, makes complete sense. I hated the set in the first act but when the Grand Canal appeared it all came together. Banderas was good. He surprised me. I didn't see the movie Evita so I don't know from that (I heard it was pretty lame) but, IMHO, he came through as Guido. The one problem I had with most everyone (except Banderas and he has an excuse) was the accents. If the accents aren't working, CUT THEM! Even Chita, who was marvelous and will most likely be nominated for Featured Actress in a Musical, had a not very good French accent. She made up for it in the Follies number. Wow, is she amazing! Jane Krakowski was quite good as Carla (her entrance and exit in A Call from the Vatican is memorable). I had forgotten how much theatre she did before moving West. But her Italian accent didn't work. Maybe it's fond memory of 20 years ago, but I don't remember accents in the orignal. Maybe I'm wrong. The show is playing to Standing Room right now and will easily be nominated for Best Musical Revival.

Regarding the Michael Riedel column on Bernadette, only her doctor knows if he was being too hard on her or not. If she actually is as sick as reported --- which very well be the case --- then the column is totally out of line. If, however, she is not as sick as reported and is actually just upset that only some of the reviews were raves, then his column was perfect.
This leads to a whole group of topics for discussion. As Jason has already reported to readers of this here site, she can be awful one night and brilliant another. Is this health related? Can she do eight performances a week at the level Ben Brantley saw? Will this affect her chances for a Tony? Apparently she proved that she can do the role, but can she sustain it? Will this hurt ticket sales? If I buy tickets now for September will she still even be in the show? This is a question for everyone, not just BK, although I'd like BK's comments too.
Posted by William E. Lurie @ 05/08/2003 06:21 AM PST
GYPSY is one of my favorite shows. Bernadette Peters is NOT a favorite of mine - in fact, I dislike her performances intensely.
But here I am torn, I would like to see the show - but however I feel about her (and it borders on revulsion - strong word I know), since she is the major muscle, I wouldn't want to see it without her. So I wouldn't buy tickets much in advance.
