"THE ORDER OF BUSINESS"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, it is Saturday, and the cleaning lady will soon be here to cast her Evil Eye on me should I be sitting here like so much fish. So, today we shall have short notes which is fine given that the notes of the past few days have been endless and long, not necessarily in that order.

The first order of business is to don our pointy party hats, our colored tights and pantaloons, to break out the cheese slices and ham chunks, and to dance the Hora and even the Mashed Potato – because we’ve got an upcoming birthday to celebrate and said birthday belongs to our very own Francois from France. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, today we are celebrating Francois from France’s birthday even though said birthday is not actually until Monday. So, let us all give a hale and hearty birthday salutation to Francois from France on the count of trois: Une, deux, trois – Happy Birthday Francois from France mon ami! What a lively and sparkling party we shall have here at haineshisway.com and all the best people will be here including Les Demoiselles de Rochefort and La Parapluis de Cherbourg. Jules et Jim will be here, too, along with Le Samourai. What the hell am I talking about?

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below so we can get to the second order of business, and perhaps even the third and fourth order of business.

The second order of business is to not forget that our Unseemly Live Chat is tomorrow at six o’clock Pacific Mean Daylight Savings time. Be there or be round because there will be a lot of dirt dished and dished dirt. Also, don’t forget that on Monday the price of Kritzerland will be going up two count them two dollars. That is because last Monday I found out the books were costing me two dollars more than the last book – but I’d agreed to keep the old price through this weekend and so I have. Also, don’t forget, Donald will have a brand spanking new radio show up tomorrow for your mental delectation.

The third order of business is the return of our Unseemly Trivia Contest – today’s contest being courtesy of dear reader William E. Lurie. Here is the question:

A famous singer/actress appeared in two related film biographies. In the first she played the wife of a famous songwriter. In the second she played a singer whose signature song was written by the songwriter in the first film and actually became the name of the singer's film bio.

Name

1) The actress/singer who played both roles

2) The songwriter who was the subject of the first film

3) The actor who played the songwriter

4) The name of his film biography

5) The song that became the title of the singer's film biography

6) The singer who was the subject of the second film

7) The Broadway show that the singer introduced the song in

Remember, DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWER TO THE SITE – simply e-mail it to me at bruce@haineshisway.com or by using the unseemly Ask BK button on our home page. You have until midnight on Monday to submit your excellent answers.

Yesterday, I took part in a script reading of a new motion picture. A producer friend of mine called at the last minute and asked if I’d take part and I thought why not and I did it. I had a good time – the script is a thriller along the lines of Rope – very low budget. The amusing thing when I walked into the room was seeing one of my former New York assistants, Gretchen Weiss, who was there to read the part of the Bitch. She did very well and we all had a good time.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must vamoose or vandonkey out of here before I get ye olde Evil Eye. Today’s topic of discussion: Let us talk once again of vacations – if you could go anywhere in the world what would your ideal vacation be, how long would it last, and why would you want to go where you go? I’ll check back after the cleaning lady has vamoosed or vandonkeyed.

- Bruce Kimmel

Ooohhh... What a nice topic for such a gray and drizzly day here in Richmond.

I've only traveled abroad once in my life, and that was a trip to the Philippines when I was six. So, I've always wanted to go to Australia. When I was in high school, a classmate of mine was from Brisbane, and she shared many stories and pictures of her life back home. When her father got transferred back "down under" she would send us postcards and more pics. I would love a couple of days - week even - too see those pictures in person.

Otherwise, a few weeks off home in Richmond, would be nice... Oh, it was! ;-)

First... Happy Birthday François.

Second... chat was Sunday last week. Isn't is supposed to be Monday this week? At the same time as chat the Drama Desk awards are being webcast on Theatremania.com. They aren't being televised this year which is a good thing for out-of-towners because it was only on the New York 1 local all-news station and this year with the webcast people from all over can see them. Chita is hosting.

If I could take a vacation other than the usual trips to Chicago to visit relatives I think I'd go to Southern CA since I haven't been there for about fifteen years and Ray has never been there. Of course I'd visit BK and Donald but I'd also go to the old Disneyland (and if there was time the new one) and take a side trip to visit friends in Vegas. Maybe this will happen sooner rather than later.

And François...

Joyeux Anniversaire!

Hope you are able to partake of some nice chunks of "jambon et fromage", and a nice big "gateaux aux chocolat" - or whatever flavor your birthday-self desires!

Posted by Jose C. Simbulan @ 05/17/2003 09:42 AM PST

Oh - chat is on Monday then - we'll give out our own awards.

Now, let's get some postin' goin' on, shall we. There is a PARTY goin' on here, so where in tarnation IS everyone?

Posted by bk @ 05/17/2003 10:01 AM PST

Well, I am packing to go home from college. Which is very depressing. I hate packing. It makes me put everything in boxes and suitcases and such. And I do not like boxes or suitcases or such. And I feel very ridiculous as I am only going "home" a subway ride away and yet I still must do all this goshdarned packing business. Also, knowing I shall have to do the exact same box shpiel in about three months makes the whole thing seem very pointless -- and I have so much stuff! So many papers! So many scripts! Stuff stuff stuff. Oh, this is very overwhelming.

If I could go on vacation anywhere I would either go to London (to which I have been multiple times and just loooove it...I love how everyone sits in little parks in the middle of the city and reads newspapers and eats sandwhices...that's so fabulous, isn't it? And I'm a complete sucker for british accents...complete complete) or to Greece, to which I have never been but I hear is ridiculously beautiful. And I would like to hear people speak Greek, beecause then I could say "It's all Greek to me" and be justified.

What a great trivia question!

Saturday - rain and thunderstorms in Indiana, but that is okay.

DR Kurt is somewhere in California and my friend Bryan is in CanCun - and I am here.
Thank goodness for the sunny and bright HHW. (not Household Hazardous Waste...LOL)

I got my 1776 DVD today to watch later, and I am watching GRAND PRIX right now. Good movie although the personal stories are a bit slow. Does anyone else remember Brian Bedford in a Ross Hunter production call THE PAD AND HOW TO USE IT? A film version of a Peter Shaffer one act play called THE PRIVATE EAR. I really like that movie, and haven't seen it in years. I didn't dream it did I?

Dream vacation? Since 1961, when I saw Troy and Suzanne in ROME ADVENTURE, I have wanted to go to Rome. I have a lot of books about the city and touring there (Courtesy Half Price Books)and I could find my way around very easily. I love ALL the movies set in Rome - especially RA and THREE COINS IN THE FOUNTAIN. Of course, it isn't like that anymore - but it is, in the movies!

Posted by Jrand52 @ 05/17/2003 11:26 AM PST

Happy Birthday, Francois.

And remember, Ann, you are MUCH smarter than you were when you packed those bags the last time!

Lots of good posts yesterday. I would love to hear the Dan Dailey stories - haven't read the Previn book! And I am thinking about getting the Donen book (years old now) is it a good read? He was very funny and entertaining on the Oscar show a few seasons ago.

Posted by Jrand52 @ 05/17/2003 11:28 AM PST

Since I was twenty my dream vacation has been to go on a photo safari in Africa. Now I'm not so sure Africa is a place I would feel comfortable traveling in. Currently my dream vacation is to follow my genealogy roots. On my mother's side in England and Wales I have newly discovered cousins to meet. I would also visit the burial sites of my relatives, especially my grandparents I never met. Then I would continue onto Eastern Europe. My father's families were from Odessa and Vilna. I don't know if any of my realities survived the holocaust, but it would be great to find someone. At least I would see where my grandparents came from. This trip should also include the Czech Republic. I hear Prague is a beautiful city.

A portion of this Eastern European trip just might happen next summer when we visit our younger son in Romania. Since he will be there two years with the Peace Corps we hope to visit him.

Posted by Jane @ 05/17/2003 11:29 AM PST

Jrand52, you did not dream THE PAD AND HOW TO USE IT. It was a great movie. It played at the Bruin Theater when I worked there. I saw it multiple times and never tired of it. I didn't know it was from a one act play. What happened to Brian Bedford? As far as I can tell the movie isn't on video or DVD yet. What a shame.

Posted by Jane @ 05/17/2003 11:40 AM PST

Thanks, Jane. It was one of two One Acts...The Public Eye & The Private Ear by Peter Shaffer.

I just thought Bedford was terrific in it, but except for GRAND PRIX, and some PBS series, I haven't seen him in a lot of movies. He has done them, I just haven't seen them.

Just looked at IMDB - THE PAD... was directed by Brian Hutton who also directed WHERE EAGLES DARE. And the girl was played by Julie Sommars. I remember her from THE GOVERNOR AND JJ which co-starred Dan Dailey!

Mr BK if you know a director named Bill Rebane - he directed Miss Leslie Parrish in THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION in 1975...maybe he knows how to contact her.

Posted by Jrand52 @ 05/17/2003 12:07 PM PST

Gee, I'm touched!

Thanks -- Merci -- for the kind
wishes and cheers and
chunks of "fromage et
jambon"...
How thoughtful of you!

Wish Michel You-Know-Who
could be here to play piano
and for a singalong....

I'd prefer Coffee cake, but if
not, Chocolat Cake's ok... and
some Kirr should be in
order.... Regular kirr, not Kirr
Royal...

Thank you!

First and foremost: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FRANCOIS!!! Joyeaux Anniversaire! I hope you have a great day...

Speaking of great days, I have some news for all of you. I GOT A JOB! I GOT A JOB! I GOT A JOB!! It isn't the OKLAHOMA! tour (yet). I'm going to be doing TITANIC and SCARLET PIMPERNEL at Bucks County Playhouse in Pennsylvania for the summer (beginning June 18 and running through July 20 and then again August 17 through Aug. 31). Its not paying a huge amount of money, but its only two months and I've so desperately wanted work, and I love these shows, so I'm going to take it! Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you so much for all of your wonderful positive Hainesie/Kimlet vibes...I know you are the reasons I got this job. And to top it off, I told my mom and dad, and my dad said, "maybe we'll drive up there and see you in something!" Wouldn't that be wonderful?? Oh! Things are lookin' up...its a great little world we live in... :-)

Posted by Jason @ 05/17/2003 12:28 PM PST

Congratulations, Jason!!

Your post absolutely radiates happiness, it completely made my day to read it. :-) Congratulations congratulations congratulations, that's really wonderful. Enjoy!

Jason, I'm so happy for you. I use to live about twenty minutes from the Bucks County Playhouse. I do wish I could go see you.

"Happy as a Pup", hey, Jason?

Congratulations!

Posted by François @ 05/17/2003 01:02 PM PST

Congratulations, Jason. Be sure to comb the archives at the Bucks County Playhouse, so you can send me anything you find on Miss Frances Farmer, who made her comeback there in the summer of 1957 in The Chalk Garden and The Jamison Affair. You are in good company!

Posted by Jrand52 @ 05/17/2003 01:03 PM PST

First: Happy Birthday Francois!
Second: Congratulations Jason!
I send great amounts of love and joy
to you both!

I have been errant and truant for a
few days, and I should fill you all in
on a few things that have happened
since I last posted. First, and
greatest, I am officially done with
high school classes. Friday was my
last day, and Monday I start senior
project. I do have to return daily for
Jazz Ensemble, as our concert is in
three weeks, ut still, I am done! No
homework to do! No papers to write!
No tests, AP or otherwise, to take!
And best of all, I get to sleep until
8:30ish, instead of 7:00ish!
The other wonderful news is that I
heard what my graduation ticket
from my uncle in Chicago will be:
tickets to "Bounce", row H center for
the performance at 7:30 on June
22nd! Will anyone else be at that
performance? I would love to meet
anyone who is there. Maybe I will
even meet Mr. Stephen Sondheim
himself! As you can imagine, this is a
thrill greater than all thrills, and one
of the best graduation presents
conceivable!
Well, I have chattered much, but I
have not yet answered the question
of the day: Currently, my dream
vacation is the one to Chicago that I
am going to take in just over a
month, but after that would be a trip
to London, in order to see so much
theater that I nearly die. That would
be, in a word, heavenly.

By the way, Jason, what parts are
you playing in Bucks County?

Posted by Hapgood @ 05/17/2003 01:07 PM PST

Oh, by the way, Brian Bedford is still
quite active in the theater. He is up
for a Tony for playing Orgon in
Tartuffe. He also works nearly every
summer at Stratford: This year he is
playing Garry Essendine in "Present
Laughter" and Don Adriano in
"Love's Labors Lost." I saw him in
"Private Lives" there in 2001, and he
was magnificent. He has great
presence.

Posted by Hapgood @ 05/17/2003 01:09 PM PST

Thanks, guys, for your well-wishes.

Hapgood: I will be playing First Class Steward Henry Etches (he survived) in TITANIC and one of Percy's cronies in PIMPERNEL.

In addition to Ms. Frances Farmer, here are some others who have worked at Bucks Co. Playhouse over the years:

Uta Hagen
Bea Arthur
Liza Minelli
Conrad Bain
Paul Lynde
Howard Di Silva
Imogene Coca
Margaret Hamilton
Bob Fosse
Colleen Dewhurst
and
Merv Griffith

Now, who wouldn't love to work in a theatre that Liza, Fosse, Coca and the Wicked Witch of the West have worked? Not to mention Mr. Eddy Mekka (aka Carmine on Laverne & Shirley), who is playing Tevye in FIDDLER next month.

Posted by Jason @ 05/17/2003 01:12 PM PST

Francois - Joyeux Anniversaire!

Jason - Congrats on the gig. Nice work if you can get - and you got it cause your tried!

Drop me a line re BK's upcoming project. Perhaps we can get together before the session.

"R&H" opened last night. A good house that really "got" the lyrics, unusual for a Friday night crowd on LI. One down, three to go!

Posted by Phil @ 05/17/2003 01:43 PM PST

Oh, and dream trips.....

Mine are Australia and South Africa (specifically Johannesburg, where my grandmother was born). My wife realizes one of hers next April, when we're off to Costa Rica (frequent flyer miles are a wonderful thing!). As for her other dream locales - Thailand (specifically Bangkok) and Tahiti.

1) Finally!!!! The Official Bruce Kimmel Website is up and running again. Come take a look at wwww.brucekimmel.com

2) Bon Fete, mon ami Francois.

3)DVD watching the film version of Copenhagen. (The play that Bruce recorded)

4) CDs listening to: reissues of Nine (2cds), Anyone Can whistle and House of Flowers

5) Video: Racquet with Bruce Kimmel

6) Big Congrats to Jason. Break your legs! (One leg per show)

7) My current want to go to place is New Zealand. The country is absolutely gorgeous and I want to see it.

8) Saw our very own Mark Rothman's play last night called The Wearing of the Greenblatts. A very enjoyable experience. He also acts in it as well. An all around enjoyable evening. It ends this weekend so anyone in Fort Lauderdale area should go and stay afterwards and say hi.

Posted by Michael Shayne @ 05/17/2003 01:52 PM PST

Happy B-day, Francois!!! BIG Congrats to Jason, two show's I've always wanted to MD, and someday it will happen.

Vacation - London had always been my dream and lately it's included France and Italy as well. I'd like to see Disneyland Paris while I'm there.

Today, I roasted a turkey (first time ever) in a "Flavor Wave" oven. It took an hour and a half for a 10lb+ turkey and it was DEEEEEE-lightful. I think the Flavor Wave is a must for someone on the Atkins diet, or lifestyle as I like to say.

Posted by Matthew @ 05/17/2003 02:27 PM PST

Congrats, Jason!

Both great shows, too! I assistant directed TITANIC, and directed SCARLET PIMPERNEL, so if there is any help I can offer, let me know...

In other news, your good vibes have also been helping in my audition exploits. I was one of about a dozen potential candidates who auditioned for the role of Tateh in RAGTIME, and I am one of three who have been called back for the part. I am also being considered for Younger Brother.

The turnout for auditions has been very good, and the competition is fierce, but friendly. It has all the ear-markings of a great show!

So please keep the good vibes a-coming! We have call-backs on Wednesday and Thursday.

Posted by Dave @ 05/17/2003 02:49 PM PST

Bon anniversaire, François!!

(Just a wee point, bk - why are we celebrating his birthday today when it's actually on Monday? Maybe we can be greedy with the ham and pineapple and do it again on Monday? Or maybe we can have frogs legs and French fries - oops, sorry, freedom fries - instead?).

And congrats to Jason! I see from the cast album that you get to sing a lot of 'What a Remarkable Age This Is'.

I was E&T yesterday and noticed from the day before there was talk of Gordon MacRae and his daughters. I don't think it was mentioned, but Heather has had a couple of CDs out recently. One is called Songs For My Father and is a recording of her cabaret act where she sings (yes, you've guessed it) songs her father sung, including quite a bit from Oklahoma and Carousel. The other, I Choose Love, is a less successful CD of more modern songs.

Oh - on topic. I'd love to go back to San Francisco. I've been three times but think it's absolutely magical. Also, like Michael above, I really fancy New Zealand. A friend of mine has just come back from a round the world trip and said New Zealand was the best bit, so much outstanding scenery.

Posted by Allan @ 05/17/2003 02:58 PM PST

Happy Birthday (Francois), Congratulations (Jason), and let's go to London together, DR Anna, which is a city I've always longed to visit and never have. Book me tickets to THE MOUSETRAP the first night.

At last your ship has come in Jason. Let me join in the well wishing. Wonderful news indeed.

Early birthday greetings to you François. May Monday be full of wonderful surprises and much happiness. All of which you deserve.

Allan: New Zealand has it all. The most beautiful place on earth and hobbits too. We are so lucky here in Oz to be so close. Please call in on your way.
What a wonderful good news day. Arsenal won the FA Cup too. (Yes! Me with football news - I lived for a year near the Arsenal Football ground in North London in 1973)

I hope to be in France in 2004. It is my destination of choice. I still have dreams of the doing the Nile Cruise/Pryramids trip but I don't think that will ever eventuate.

Posted by Tom from Oz @ 05/17/2003 03:29 PM PST

Happy Birthday to our very own Dear Francois. I wish you much cake!

I'm very happy for you, Jason! Scarlet Pimpernel is one of Dear Reader Sandra's very favorites. You'll have to send her a photo of yourself all dressed in lace and feathers, you fop. Will you get to fence?

Dream trips. Hmm, funny you should ask. My DH (Dear Husband in internet lingo) suggested a few months ago that we take a second honeymoon, since our kids are all grown up and it's the off year for the every-other-year family reunions that his side of the family has. So, we tried very hard to decide where to go. I'd like to go to LA or NYC or a cruise or someplace exciting like that...he hates cities, people, and touristy places. He wants to sleep on the ground at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

So, we finally agreed that we would go to Austin, Texas, to see the bats that roost at the bridge (I think bats are swell little animals, and he thinks he could stand a fairly small city).
So, he tells his mom our plans, and she says that since we will be out traveling we should come and see her. After all, Indiana isn't that far out of the way from southern Texas (1200 miles -- I checked). And June isn't convenient for her -- she wants us to come in August. And they have a room in the retirement home that family members can rent, so we can visit with her every day, all day long for a week or so. We wouldn't need more than one night to see bats in Texas, anyway, so it all works out well.

So, there you have it. My second honeymoon. Indiana in a nursing home with MIL (mother-in-law in internet lingo) during August when I have severe allergies. Isn't it all just grand the way it just all worked out?

So now you know why I prefer travel with Sandra or DRs Kerry and MusicGuy or with my sister.

Posted by Laura @ 05/17/2003 03:53 PM PST

Poor, Laura. But at least you get to leave.

OAT (on another topic in internet lingo) click on my name to turn the clock back 41 years.

What a lovely group of postings for a Saturday. Brian Bedford did the original tour of Deathtrap and he was terrific (does my darling daughter remember seeing it?).

Jane - did you get me into the Bruin for free and if not, why?

You'll be happy to know that Gordon McCrea and his ever-lovin' Sheila make will be making an appearance in Kritzer 3 if I ever finish the thing.

Thanks for the wishes and the

Laura; like your husband, I'd
like to visit the Grand Canyon
one day, to get a real
appreciation of Mother Nature

What sparkling posts from all the best dear readers today...We've had laughter, tears, highs, lows, jumpers from buildings, everything...

Dr Francois -- A Most Happy Birthday to you....I would suggest you have a big bowl of the onion soup with a crusty cheese top at Pied Au Cochon (or something like that) right at the side of Ste. Eustache near Les Halles. It's Yummy. And then something sinful from Le Notre Patisserie. Pardon the spelling!!

DR Jason -- I send you the same sentiment that a friend of mine sent me years ago when I played a solo concert at RCMH in Manhattan. It read "congratulations, and I send you a warm kiss on your opening!"

DR Hapgood -- Well thank heavens child, we thought you'd be in that scholarly salt mine forever. The weekend that you are going to see your play in Chicago, is the same weekend that DR Kerry and I will be presenting our 2 fundraiser concerts in the northwest suburb of Chicago called Barrington Hills. June 21st & 22nd. You better be a good boy and answer all the stuff I asked you in my email to you way back!

and DR Jrand -- I followed your instructions to click on your name to turn the clock back 41 years. Your picture looked terrific back then....very chic!
I didn't know you were a blonde back then.

Question of the day -- DR Kerry and I have been extremely fortunate over the years and have gotten to a lot of the destinations that have been talked about today. We have a rather big milestone vacation/celebration coming up fairly soon, and we have been discussing either Hawaii or NYC. I'll let DR Kerry comment more on this.

I've been wanting to comment
on an earlier post of yours
regarding that wonderful
movie with a very young
Richard Gere:
BLOODBROTHERS, that
seems to be forgotten by
most..
It's been one of my favorites for
years and I was glad to see
that another Kimlet
remembered that gem...

Mulligan's films are usual
quite special, and the other
title you also mentioned is
terrific too; Days Of Heaven!

Sorry for being OT....

DR Laura -- What can I say...please tell me that you are NOT seriously considering taking a week out of your precious life, short-changing the bats down to one little brief look-see, and then sitting in a nursing home 1200 miles away for almost a week??!?

You are the same woman that sat eating at Dan Tana's, and Musso & Frank, and TWBP at Dupar's. You stood on stage with Elaine Stritch and George Chakiris. For God's sake...you can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan..YOU ARE WOMAN !!!!

Are you going to force us to round up the forces and deliver a multi-state bitch-slap, possibly even led by the Grand Wazir himself???

There has to be a way for you to JUST SAY NO !!

Phewwww.... it took all afternoon to build that soapbox. I watched Martha Stewart.

Is the Previn book you posted about yesterday called NO MINOR CHORDS?

Posted by Jrand @ 05/17/2003 06:03 PM PST

No-one does remember the incident François.

"Blood Brothers" still just rings truly awful bells for me - the musical that is. Sorry td.
Just checked and the movie was released for TV under the title "A Father's Love". Must check it out. I like Sorvino too.

Oh my....this must be a dinner lull (on the west coast) and I guess an almost dessert lull on the east coast.

I think I hear BK getting a wooden hangar out of the closet....

Cult tv Stars Bio of Julie Newmar is on. What a beautiful woman. Just moving into the NYC phase of her career. I see Li'l Abner in her future.

On Hallmark channel tonight starting at midnight EST - 3 episodes of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour - none of the episodes that have been mentioned here are scheduled, but we need to keep our eyes on the TV GUIDE for An Unlocked Window and The Gift.

My ideal vacation isn't about a place, but is more about the people with whom we (my ever-lovin' der Brucer and I) spend that vacation. We have, several times, spent our vacations with der Brucer's daughter and her family, and the vacations would have been wonderful, except...

Except his daughter forgets every time that the vacation is intended for ALL of us, and not just for her. So she expects her husband to watch the kids, and her father der Brucer to go shopping with her and buy her nice clothes, and I'm supposed to do all of the cooking. She very readily forgets that the rest of us are supposed to be on vacation, too, and doesn't lift a finger to do one thing for the rest of us.

So I suppose my ideal vacation would be spent with der Brucer, his son-in-law, and the two grandsons. A trip to Disney World would be nice, the boys would love that. Or a nice historical trip, visiting Gettysburg and Williamsberg and all the other bergs and burgs that catch our interest. As long as it's just us guys, sharing the chores that come up during the trip along with the joys.

That, and if I can add to my cookbook collection with all sorts of interesting regional stuff, then I would be very happy indeed!

Annabel with Dean Stockwell and Susan Oliver at midnight.

House Guest with MacDonald Carey at 1 am.

The Black Curtain with Richard Basehart at 2 am.

All EST on the Hallmark Channel.

MANY HAPPY RETURNS OF THE DAY, FRANCOIS!

I wish you bluebirds, in the spring; to give your heart a song to sing. I wish you health. I wish you wealth. I wish you love!

My ideal vacance, sans famille, would be to the City of Lights. I have a fascination for all things Parisian (no comments from the peanut gallery, s'il vous plait) and often my dreams are set in Paris. If you're into this sort of things, I've been told of three past lives - - one in which I was a WOMAN, living outside of Paris during the Revolution (the MAJOR one, not some students putting up the barricades), a serving girl, most likely, who somehow became a member of the English Court. So, should I ever get to Paris, I guess it would be a sort of *homecoming* (and maybe I'd meet up with Shirley MacLaine, too)! Should you want information on the other lives, just ask Shirley, or better still, ask me.

Sri Lanka also has appeal, but because of Peter Jackson and his LORD OF THE RING movies, boy, oh, boy do I want to see New Zealand!

Thanks td, for your wishes and
kind words....

You know, there's some
French melody that would go
VERY well with all this...;- )

A French melody? Perhaps I heard it in a past life?

DR Jason: Welcome to Pennsylvania!

Pencils come from Pennsylvania. . .(you all know the rest, dontcha?)

Francois, Bon Anniversaire!

Congrats to Jason and to Hapgood and continued good vibes to Dave.

ALMOST all of my vacations have been ideal. I'm often lucky and run into good situations and interesting people. I look at each vacation as an opportunity for adventure, and it is. Our last foray to Los Angeles is a good example: I met the mighy BK; I met Elaine Stritch; I met Sheree North and George Chakiris. The weather was wonderful, and it was a great adventure. Many vacations have turned out as joyous. My ideal vacation would be one with more time off for whatever adventures lie ahead.

So, this summer is Hawaii or New York City. Any suggestions Jason, Ben (who's in Key West with Ant right now), WFO and all you other wonderful NY Hainsies and Kimmlets?

Posted by Kerry @ 05/17/2003 09:48 PM PST

S. Woody White -- ain't in-laws grand?

DR Kerry, you're just lucky you don't have out-of-town in-laws -- or you'd be spending your vacations with them.

Posted by Laura @ 05/17/2003 10:36 PM PST

DR Laura: Ah yes, but that's because they're in town in-laws which comes with its own set of joys!

Posted by Kerry @ 05/17/2003 10:41 PM PST

Kerry: I say you must, must, must (that's three musts) come to New York to visit. Hawaii is fine and all, what with the beaches and beautiful bodies and pretty flowers and chocolate covered macadamia nuts, but who needs that when you can have steamy subways and overpriced food? You've got BROADWAY here...and me (I'm fairly certain that those two words will be synonymous with one another in the very near future)! And Ben and Ant (who are lovely, lovely gentlemen) and now we've got Craig, too! We could have a Hainesie/Kimlet get-together, even if BK isn't here (is that permitted?) You just have to make sure that you come to NYC when I'm here. I have three or four layoff weeks between gigs (think late July through early August), and I'd love to meet you guys!

Posted by Jason @ 05/17/2003 11:15 PM PST

You're right, of course, Dear Reader Kerry -- my in-law experiences are more concentrated, since I see them rarely; you get to deal with yours more often for shorter periods of time. Still, a second honeymoon with the MIL?

Well, I just got done with in the kitchen... and I wasn't baking of cooking!!!!

I decided this past afternoon to rearrange the kitchen - something that me and my roommate had wanted to do a few weeks ago, so...

Well, it's almost 12 hours from when I started... And I still have a few little things to take care of, but for the most part, it's done. *I did not work straight through the past 12 hours, I did take a few breaks and there, and there and here. Who knew moving the refrigerator would lead to moving so many other things.... UGH!

Well, I'm gonna take a nice hot shower and head to bed. When I wake up will be anyone's guess!!!

*Of course, I am trying to figure out what I will make first in my newly arranged and organized kitchen... Hmmm...

Jose, there is no such thing as "merely moving a refrigerator."

~~~~~good vibes~~~~~~ to DAVE!!
Let me be the first to wish a fond, sad "Au revoir" to the Broadway production of LES MISERABLES, which is giving its final performance tonight. No more barricade...no more loaves of bread...no more red flags...no more runaway carts. Eponine only dies one more time. Javert only dies one more time. Fantine only dies one more time. Valjean only dies one more...oh, for goodness' sake...why do they all die?? Its had a very good run--some would say it overstayed its welcome--but I'm still sad to see it close. I guess I'll have to wait for the revival in 20 years to get to be in it, and by then I'll be too old to sing "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables." Who knows...maybe by then I'll be old enough to play Valjean!
I wish I could go to the final performance, but I wasn't invited (Cameron must have forgotten in all the hulabaloo), so I'm going to drown my sorrows at a Yankees game. I don't know what I'll drown my sorrows in--Mountain Dew, perhaps.
Au revoir, Cosette. We're going to miss you...
DR Jason -- I loved reading your post to Kerry, but I think you are overlooking that NYC has all the same things that you attribute to Hawaii ; Beaches (you have Coney Island and Rockaway)...beautiful bodies (I know that you are a baby Jason, but I'm old enough to remember a wonderful old watering hole on 3rd Ave. called Uncle Charlies, and yes they were beautiful!), pretty flowers (it jujst takes a stroll through Central Park), and chocolate-covered macadamias (well even though it is now gone, DR Kerry and I always used to go for wonderful goodies and treats to Rumpelmayers).
So as usual, your city has it all, including all the versions of B'way (on, off, off-off) Joe Allen's, the Cafe des Artistes, and so much more.
Posted by MusicGuy @ 05/18/2003 08:09 AM PST
Well, it's about 11:35 AM EST... And I've already been up since 9:30... After finally getting to bed at 5:00.
However, in the light of day, the "new" kitchen looks great. Once I start cooking in it today, I'll see how the "flow" is, but it looks like everything will be A-OK. -And my roommate liked the new arrangement too.
-And I treated myself to a donut AND a pastry this morning! -Do I see a nap in my near future?
I, too, will miss Les Miserables. Such fond memories for me - not only of the show, but also the people I've had the fortune of sitting next to in the audience. -Pass the Kleenex, please. -And I still remember the first time I noticed that Valjean was packing up the candlesticks at the end of the first act... -he never sold them... OK - now I am getting misty-eyed...
